Civilization V

Post » Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:15 pm

I'm genuinely excited by this new incarnation as I have been with every other Civ game.

It's almost here!

I think the changes are going to be really refreshing though I will miss espionage and religion. I think they give further depth but maybe they will introduce them in the expansions.

Anyone else counting the days? (5 to go now including today)

Damn excited I am. Demo should be available tomorrow. ^_^
Will check how the game fares on my computer before I buy. Currently, I'm eyeing the DDE available on Direct2Drive, as the artbook and five figurines in the "offline CE" don't really seem that great for the additional price I would have to pay.

It's on my watchlist, of course. Been playing Civ 4 with my bro for ages now...frankly, I'm bored to death with the game. Maybe the fifth installment in the series will breathe in some new life to the whole thing. Of course, gonna be a while till I get the game myself, but if there's something I have, it is patience.

To me, the changes to terrain and military alone are worth it. Having some Panzer General in my Civ? Yes, please!

Civ V uses Steamworks. I don't believe there are any additional restrictions though, just Steam.

Well, if by "Steam" you mean the same kind of restrictions as on Empire: Total War, then I won't buy it (making it the first Civ game that I won't own). What is the point of having a multiplayer game and owning multiple PCs if I can't play it multiplayer?

As other posters noted, the initial release will use Steam. One can only hope that their complete version will ship without DRM, like it did for the North American version of Civilization IV. Unfortunately, the European version of Civilization IV: Complete did have DRM and shipped without Colonization :banghead:

It's been rare if you could play a multiplayer game in multiplayer on several computers at the same time since, what, the first year of this millenium?

And Steamworks is here to stay, folks, in this case its also what the multiplayer servers will utilize.

Which is bogus since any Xbox or PS3 player can sit down with their friends (and for a significantly smaller investment) and play a multiplayer game with multiple people.

DRM should never be used. It stops zero pirates and only serves to make it easier for publishers to manipulate and control the gamers. Don't feed the monster.

You can with Civ5 too on hotseat play.... (assuming they kept that feature)

Doesn't the game come out the 21st, which is tomorrow? That's what Steam says.

Depends on the game, since local multiplayer has become very, very rare. Also, hotseat play is in the works, and even something as bizarre as play-by-mail.

Europe gets it later. Just another sign of some people being years behind the possible. ^_^

I'm still on the fence for this - I guess I'll have to wait for the demo before I can decide. On the one hand it looks very nice, though the hexagons don't make the map look any more "natural" as they claim, but it'll really come down to the fine details: how much micromanagement will it take to move armies around since you can no longer stack them, has diplomacy really been improved, and so on. Hoping for the best, but the reviews I've read so far have been mixed.

This, among others, will be waiting for Christmas.

Really can afford only one game until then, and that will be FNV.

One of my favorite games of all time was Civil War Generals 2 (not a game that I expect saw a lot of non-US sales). The hex map and 1-unit-per-tile rule both strongly remind me of CWG2. If the combat is half as good as CWG2 then this will be the greatest Civ game of all time... shame it is on Steam.

Well, it was a pretty badly integrated feature, just like a civic you wouldn't be able to get rid of, and just contract via research, which in itself did not make much sense. I like the new "skill tree" approach to managing your state. After all you are building one single iconic civilization to stand the test of time, not a country that changes its government as much as their leaders change their underpants. With the previous game, everyone would just end up with the same and most effective civic combo and maybe change to a police state when war approaches.

I pre-ordered it, I hope that my cities aren't unhealthy till much later in the game, like they were in Civ 4.

Oh yes, I hope there are more ways to solve that nasty problem. For meddling enemies we finally get the Giant Death Robot that was demanded so many times in the last five or six years, but healthcare always took too much time to develop.
