Clark: Spore Carrier or Ghoul

Post » Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:29 am

Question to devs (hope I'm not spoiling): there has been a slight debate on the Vault wiki over whether RD Clark exterminated Feral ghouls or Spore carriers. Could someone of you verify Ghoul or Carrier? This in regards to the 2108 entry (all dates in this year refer to this event). They looked like corpses (like ferals do) but some argue there could not have been a trigger for ghouls to appear in Zion. Once again, hope I didnt say too much.

Mind if non-devs discuss it?

Spoiler
The only real argument for them being Spore Carriers is that this would cohere with the rest of the diaries. But Clark does not mention them being green, which you'd think would be notable.

I'd say they are Feral Ghouls. There's no reason a few couldn't have wandered into the valley.

EDIT: Clark mentioned he'd killed them all, so I'm guessing it was Ferals and that spore carriers came later. Interesting that he died from a lung disorder. Also, note the nice plant by his corpses head -- was he infected? Glad he didn't resurrect.

I'm pretty sure they were spore carriers, what with all the references to vault 22.

I kind of came to the conclusion that both happened to wander into the valley.

Spore Carriers would not behave like undead humans like he was describing imo. He would probably have referred to them as monsters of some sort. I also subscribe to the theory that they were simply ghouls which wandered into Zion, and were wiped out. That would also have prevented the spread of further lasting radiation in Zion.

In Vault 22 there was a computer that told us when people who died of the spores their corpses would re-animate. There was one that specifically described the death of one of the scientists. So he was killing what would become spore carriers. From what I read in vault 22 the spores kill you then slowly replace your flesh. The spore carriers in Zion are former humans.

The Man eater plants and giant mantises were created by the vault 22 scientists for pest control. You see this when you find areas the escaping Vault 22 people inhabited being defended by the man eater plants. This was also described in Vault 22.

While I think that he was talking about feral ghouls, what is the likely hood that they are lobotomites? Judging from DM and HH, the devs love to reference the other DLCs.

Spore Carriers tend to stay still until they find something living to attack. They don't wander. Ghouls wander.

I'd say they were feral ghouls. Randall was a wanderer running into the Fallout universe as we know it. Ghouls are pretty solidly rooted in the Fallout mythos, so it makes more sense to encounter them. I'm thinking the Spore Carriers weren't around until later, after Randall died of the fungal infection and spread the spores.

Also he didn't seem to make any connection between the "zombies" he shot and Vault 22 party. I think vault 22 dudes came after no? He seemed like it was new information when his new wife told him the Vault 22 guys had gotten sick from something in the vault.

Randall probably wasn't killed by the fungal infection as he died decades after he drove out the Vault 22 survivors. People killed by it reanimate as Spore Carriers, his body is right where he died and there are no spore creatures where he dies. They seem thickest where the Vault 22 Expedition camped, at the guard camp and the other place where they penned up the Mexicans then ate them.

It's pretty clear Randall died of old age. An age of 71 is ancient in a world without healthcare and his death was nearly 30 years after his war with the Vault 22 expedition.

Feral Ghouls.

Why would he describe walking corpses at one point, and then cannibals wearing Vault jumpsuits several years later? Why didn't the first corpses wear jumpsuits? He only mentioned the jumsuits (and made a big-ish deal about it) when the cannibals came along.

Randell probably died of lung cancer caused by radiation exposure. The symptoms do not fit the spore infection but fit perfectly with radiation caused cancer

I'm not sure, but I do remember fighting at least one spore carrier.

Spoiler
August 23rd
Saw them through scope. Corpses walking around. Finally gone crazy. Dementia maybe.

August 24th
I'm not crazy, they're real. Goddammit they are real.

Rushed me the moment they saw me, snarling like animals. They look like corpses but don't smell rotted.

I'll be putting them out of their misery. Doing for them what I never could for myself.

Seem like Ghouls if you ask me but the lack of appearance of Ghouls in Zion and it is after the Vault 22 Dwellers are defeated so I would say that the evidence might be tipped in the favour of Spore Carriers. Then again, 'rushed' isn't a word I'd use to describe Spore Carriers, but Ghouls walking on two legs sounds more likely.

I am going to say Ghouls.
