I never use the pre-set classes anyway, so I don't care. Classes in TES are kind of a vestigial feature anyway, they aren't necessary for the game to work.

In an effort to minimize menu surfing, it helps with not having to scroll trhough a list of classes and rather lets the player become who they want. Classes are useless anyway as if you want to be a fighter, then just focus on those skills. Ditto for mage, ditto for archer. Why do you need a class to tell you what to work on? Just work on what you want and don't worry about that little name tag they used to give you at the front door.

Ditching the class-system seems to be a good idea. It's worth a try.

Speculation follows:
Somehow, I still think we will be able to pick a few skills we can "boost" at the start of the game, just as the major skills were boosted in Oblivion, or be given a certain set of total skill points to distribute above a "default" skill level. The skills you boost just won't be the only ones to affect level increase.

I agree, if they don't let us do that it would be unfair :D

The class system in previous elder scrolls was extremely shallow so i don't care that it's gone. I'd still like to be able to name my class though.

They should just name your class as you play, i.e. if you bash things your classed as a barbarian, but if you start sitching to magic, your called a mage, (just the name)

With no classes game let you be who you want to be. It makes you to feel the world more freely. With no chains to hold you. So thats why I like this idea.

Didn't everyone make a custom class anyway. I think they should keep the combat/magic/stealth specialization though, that's all the class you need imho

I think something like this. As you mature your character and your stats begin to reflect a particular class, people who know you or people in places you mostly been start to call you by your class.

"So you're a Thief. I want to speak about a certain item in a certain place. Can you get it for me? There will be rewards."

"Our party needs an Acrobat. Will you join us? We are planning a raid to a nearby hideout."

Something like this. Vague in description but perfectly questy.

I think the new leveling system will work out great, so I don't mind they removed it. I'm sure it will work out.

Though, I feel there will be a way to get your "feet wet," if you will, by being able to to something similar to Tag Skills from Fallout instead of just starting at all 0's.

Being a bit of a Communist, of course I'm glad that the class-system is finally dissolved.

Joking aside, yeah I guess this is a good idea. As others have mentioned, the classes are kinda pointless anyway, so why not do it kinda like Fallout 3 (and New Vegas I quess), as in choosing a select few skills that you would like to focus on. Or something like that.

I have suggested joining guilds and factions to gain a class name, and those factions should accept you and advance your class if your skills qualified, but if you like something dynamic, then how about a dynamic skill check and the acquire name of the class that matches your skill-set more than others.

There should be a class name called "Jack of all trade" as well. ;)

No, I'm glad classes are gone. In many (most?) RPGs, they are quite a ridiculous mechanic; creating a situation where class determines what a character is and does, rather than what a character is and does determining his or her class.

Classes were always pretty superficial in TES (one of the reasons I consider the games to be superior to others), so them being dropped entirely in Skyrim is a natural step forward.

The Morrowind/Oblivion class system was flawed. People don't want to be stuck with only the skills they choose in their class (major skills) and want the freedom to improve their minor skills as they want. Thus players will improve their power rating by increasing minor skills. As a result, player level should increase when you level any skills or else the challenges you face won't be adapted to your power rating anymore.

So first change to do is to make you level when you increase any skill and not just the major from your class.

Then the second flaw in Oblivion. Every 10 increases in a stat you get a x5. Every 10 increases in a major skill you get a level up. As a result, you need to level 20 times minor skills and 10 times a major skill to get the max possible x5 multipliers. The system actually made much much much stronger classes that increases twice as many minor skills as their major skills. Leveling attributes is VERY important, mostly for END, STR, and INT (max HP, carry capacity and max MP). Everyone needs a lot of HP so the strongest mages tended to have very high skills in armorer (cause cloth using mages got a lot of stuff to repair right?), block (cause blocking with a staff works sooo well, well at least it gives you stuff to repair if you somehow get your armorer to 50) and heavy armor cause the mages with the best armor in the game are those that need the most HP right? And since HP gain isn't retroactive, you'd tend to get low level mages with ultra high armorer/block/heavy armor skills long before they level their magic skills.

Second change : attributes are out.

Third flaw which is kinda the direct oposite of the first. Since players that increase 2 minor skills for every 1 major skills are SO much stronger than players that play their class as it was meant to be, game balance is thrown out the window. Is the level 10 world difficulty tuned up for a min-max perfect x5 powergamer that leveled Destruction magic to 100 at level 1 before even starting playing the game or for some casual player that chose the Bard class and went to a speechcraft spree in between making 200 pots of restore stamina after raiding the local farms?

Third change : all skills cause level ups, major and minors in a way that rewards more specialisation. A player that got all 18 skills from 5 to 10 will surelly not be as strong as a player that got both one weapon and one armor skill to 50. From this comes the idea that leveling a skill from 49 to 50 fills up the bar to next level up much more than a 5 to 6 increase.

The system they propose is great. It's exactly like Oblivion except that all skills are major skills really :P The only "weak" part of it is the HP/Magika/Stamina level ups where you pick by hand what you want. I don't think it's too bad since linking them to some skills could force people to level skills they do not want to use just for the effects on the stats. Or you could create a skill which direct effect is to increase your max HP? But it would be a pain to define how that skill levels like most "passive" skills in Oblivion (Athletics anyone?) Choosing at each level up a HP or Magika or Stamina bonus is fine I guess.

Personally i feel that the class system used in most RPGS are too restrictive. I have never used any of the base classes in the elder scrolls series, i always use a custom class and take it from there.
i'ts about time bethesda got rid of the class system as it will improve the level of freedom in the game in regards to the skills and abilities you want youir character to have.

Just how I feel, I just make custom-made classes anyway so I feel this is an improvement.
