Class name help (details inside)

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 6:28 pm

Right now, I'm in the long process of developing an Elder Scrolls pencil-and-paper rpg based off of the rules used in the CODA system (the system used for the Lord of the Rings and the Star Trek pnp's). I figured out how the class system will work; Class abilities will be divided among the birthsigns, each class having a Guardian sign (Warrior, Thief, Mage) and a Charge sign (the others minus the Serpent) making 27 classes. This determines which class can choose what class features (because of the advancement system in CODA [5 picks per advancement], one can multiclass by spending 5 picks, thus allowing them to spend additional picks on abilities outside of their original class, so you can play what you want like in the video games).

I already distributed all the classes from Morrowind/Oblivion into this system, adding 4 new classes: Captain (like a Guard Captain or military captain), Alchemist, Druid, and Priest.

This leads to my current problem: There are 2 classes that need names to meet the 27, as shown below

Guardian / Charge
Mage / Lover
Mage / Steed

Abilities of the Mage are spellcasting-oriented (obviously) and belong to mage classes, such as Sorcerer, Battlemage, etc.
Abilities of the Lover are inspiration and support-oriented, such as Bard
Abilities of the Steed are alacrity and agility-oriented, such as Monk and Acrobat.

What would you call these two classes? I'm referring to the Lore buffs here since they may be most able to come up with a Tamrielic-sounding class name for a class of these abilities.

Cisibeo

Fakir

Respectively.

Was that totally random, or is that something from the lore? I'm confused.

They're concepts outside the norm of standard of fantasy genre tropes.

So yeah, TES Lore.

Looked into the Fakir on Wikipedia, turns out "the word "fakir" is used to denote the specifically physical path of development, compared with the word "yogi" (which Gurdjieff used for a path of mental development)" It certainly fits the idea of Mage / Steed, but I would think that class should not be restricted to a certain province of Tamriel, whereas this sounds more Khajiiti or Yokudan in origin were it a part of the lore.

As for Nightingale, I looked them up on UESP and found that Nightingale was a sort of alter-ego bard for Jagar Tharn EDIT: but was in actuality a Nightingale thief, and a Nightingale class sounds more like it would be under the Thief guardian, though in reality, it's probably more of a faction title than a class, hence the phrase "Nightingale thief".

Cisibeo still eludes me though, Googled it; nothing came up.

I hate to nitpick, but these are the sorts of things that can't be rushed when developing a pencil and paper rpg. Just look at the mess of D&D known as 4e (not meant to offend, I just don't like anything about 4e).

I have been thinking, and maybe Mystic might be a potential class name for Mage / Steed, but the problem with this is the tie between Mysticism.

Possibly Courtesan for the Mage/Lover (I think Cisisbeo is very similar?)

I like Mystic. When I think of a Mystic I think more of a wild mage type, agile, acrobatic, rather than a sit-infront-of-crystal-ball type Mysticism Mystic.

That possibly didn't make a huge amount of sense. It is early, and I'm babbling.

Hmm... Shaman could work for Mage / Lover, as in Morrowind (as an NPC class), they get conjuration and speechcraft, could be good trademarks for an inspiration-based magic user.

J'agrum Thagarn was a very powerful illusionist mage. And a seducer.

Eureka! I've figured it out (with your help of course)! Mystic will be the Mage / Steed class, as they are members of the Psijic Order, a monastic group that practices the Elder Way.

Shaman will be the Mage / Lover class, because in common perception, Shamans are sources of inspiration for tribal systems and have a degree of authority combined with the ability to use magic, reflected in the skills that Shamans have in Bloodmoon. Which include Conjuration, Speechcraft, and Illusion, all good skills to have for a Mage that focuses on inspiration and support.
