So classes are gone, right?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 3:17 pm

Yes and no what about changing midway ? To complement with another class skill your character.
If radiant only give you missions related to warrior mage and thief, then what of hybrids ?
And how will they, i hope they have tought of that, stop a mage for example that keep casting the same spell time and again meaningfullessly just to speed up.Well i shouldn t care you say, but thosekind of people are the one that cry and then end destroying entire systems that where balanced over all the aspects of the system.
The assembling of this 2 pieces are more restrictive than the begin one way and build what you want attributes/skills based gameplay, or at least it what it seems.

Assembling the pieces is more important than looking at only 1 aspect.
So far we got few information but many ??? are surging due to how the combinations seems to lack proper integration.

I made a custom class every time. It makes no difference to me.

I hope we can atleast name our class when we create our character, i know it seems a small thing but i like having a defined class/trade.

You could make a character sheet and print it out for handy reference? Or write a book? There's no one saying you can't -- why would you need to have it in the game? I can understand the want, but I don't see the need.

Well, let's see. I tend to play a fighter/mage type character. I'm a hybrid. That means I'm leveling skills from both categories. I would figure that I'd get quests according to the skills I level. In other words, I'd get both fighter and mage quests. Not that difficult.

As for your other concern, it often felt like you had to do just that in Oblivion just to get worthwhile attribute increases when leveling. Now nothing has been said regarding attributes or levels, so it's hard to comment on those. However, I'm hoping the tweaked system makes that unnecessary.

I hope that addresses your concerns. Of course, it's all hypothetical was we don't know enough about the system to really say anything definitive about it.

It changes nothing.

If you wanna make a mage, use magic skills..like you would do anyways. If you want to make a spell-blade, use 1h and 1spell. Etc. The higher your skill is the more it levels you. Dynamic and fluent system - the opposite of dumbing down.

It ends up being the SAME THING, but much much less exploitable. (lol...Oblivion's horrid major/minor system comes to mind)

To sum up the thread, no longer having classes is less restricting and allows you to play your character naturally.

It's not simplifying -- it's streamlining . They're making it more sensible, more intuitive, more good!

Finally they're getting rid of the restrictive system where what you can aspire to is predetermined from the start because of some imperial paperwork you filled out or some BS you told a guy you just met in a dungeon after being ambushed by a group of hooded zealots.

^I agree. This is a good thing because you play the way you want, not because a pre-determined class tells you so. =) It is like playing the dungeon tutorial in Oblivion (the part before the guard gives you a class) in which you play and explore to discover the fighting style that suits you.

After hearing about this, I'm getting more and more excited about this game! :flamethrower:

I agree. The class system was ridiculous and forced you down a path, Now we have more freedom and we don't have to deal with arbitrary classes that just restrict freedom.

If you can understand the want why are you even asking? I never said i need it in-game i said i'd like it in-game.
Plus, i like is how other characters have defined classes/trades, if they have them it would be nice if we did too, with proper references to said class made in-game where appropriate.

Exactly. This seems like the only logical evolution of the Elder Scrolls improve by what you do skill system. Which is one thing I always loved about Elder Scrolls. I'm all for this new leveling system.

I beleive this TES will do that more than other ones thanks to radiant ai/quests, like it was mentioned in GI how a mage will ask for pointers and will duel you if you are a mage.

"Well I'm guessing you're an experienced Pilgrim, am I right?"
- [censored] NO!

Sorry, was too tempting.

Well, like someone said, it feels more natural without classes.
and you're not hadicapped by Major/Minor skills.

Those are gone too.

Doesn't matter. By choosing what to specialize in via perks and focusing on specific skills, it's the same thing as making your own class. It just doesn't have an official name or anything.

Maybe, depends if they get it right, or if my crusader who happens to have a high destruction skill but otherwise is a combat class, gets asked to duel by mages, or if my mage who happens to use a longsword more often then most mages gets approached by barbarians wanting to wrestle. Its too early to say whether it will be good or a bit... Off... I have to wait and see before singing it praises.

It still all sounds iffy to me. I could see how not having a class could help, it's just that it seems that the more they keep simplifying (This IS a simplification.) aspects of the game the less it seems like Elder Scrolls to me.

It's not simplification if your getting rid of useless or lackluster skills and repurposing them somewhere else in the game, it's just streamlining the game. The same thing was for Morrowind to Oblivion. All the things they removed were either easily exploitable skills or spells and skills that were repurposed in the game in some other way. A smaller number of something doesn't mean the game was simplified, it's just not bloated with things that are unneeded in their current incarnation.

Streamlining = making the game worst than it's predecessor , remember they are not putting anything in they are cutting things out , i don't believe why people believe all this [censored] about how removing content makes a better game.
WTF is an "exploitable skill"? , it is a single player none can tell me what i can exploit and what i can not.
A smaller number of skills = cut the costs and make the game even more stupid , because Beth's target audience cannot into classes and attributes , they can not even find a [censored] cube .

Time for you to re-read game informer, they've added alot more than they've taken out.

The devs usually can and try their best to, and this goes for 99% of SP games ever since tetris. Oblivion's leveling system is a prime example of this, an easily exploitable mess. There is no way anyone should prefer it over Skyrim's unless they like cheating.

Actually even in Oblivion (and maybe Morrowind I'm not sure) the game totally ignores your selected class. Instead they make comments based on your actual skill sets. You could make a pure magician class in Oblivion and if you leveled up melee skills/athletics/acrobatics/whatever gives this particular message the NPCs would make comments about your muscles looking strong. So there is precedent for NPCs recognizing your skills, but there's also precedent for the class being nothing more than a label only ever seen by the player.

all characters start the same.

It didn't say that.

they are not putting anything in

So dragon shouts and duel wielding don't count for anything huh?

Your assuming the game play will be inferior because some skills were cut but you don't even know why they were cut. Come back and complain AFTER playing the game. In the meantime stop acting like you know anything about the reasons for the developer's design choices. You know not.

This is going to be a weird feeling...classes are gone. Do they still call NPCs in the game thieves, warriors, etc?

Oh yeah, you can still play to your play style, you can still play a thief, an assassin, a self sufficient hunter, a Monk/Mage. It will be easier this way, if you decide you want to change.

Like if your mage falls from grace to become a thief you aren't punished by the skill system.

This could be construed as simplifyinng, and if it is, I think its for the better.

You could do that in Oblivion too, its just you couldn't level from it (People used this to exploit). This time it levels you, but very slowly..and you probably will have chosen alot of mage perks over rogue ones.

so it's still kinda punishing.

In Morrowind when the Temple issues an arrest warrent for you, your class is referenced. Admittedly that is the only instance i can think of.
Besides i wasnt saying that the class is referenced, i was saying it would be nice if it was in skyrim, just because there is no real precedent for it doesnt mean it couldnt be incorporated into the game.
It also makes me wonder if NPC's will have classes since we wont, it would be great if NPC's gave different information depending on their class (like scouts in Morrowind), also having them describe their class was great too. But i guess that wouldnt have been returned even with classes with the inclusion of fully voiced dialogue. :sadvaultboy:

I dont really get why so many people are against being able to name their class.
