So classes are gone, right?

So is it true that they are getting rid of classes and the whole Major/Minor skills? If so this is starting to really disappoint me.

Um, what?

I would think they at least keep the basic categories of : combat, stealth, and magic....right?

Where did you hear about this?

It's been known for a while. Once you get used to it, you realize it won't make much of a difference.

You might want to take a look through these threads for interesting discussion of classes and skills:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1156464-a-little-rant-on-18-skills/
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1156629-removal-of-class-system/

So yes, they are out, but you might want to reserve judgment on how good/bad this will be. :)

Classes being removed is not a huge disappointment to me since they were just templates anyway with no effect on gameplay. The Major/Minor system I don't miss at all. With Oblivion the whole concept became so simplified almost to the point of being irrelevant. In some ways removing it actually opens up more options. We haven't seen enough of the system yet for me to judge. 18 skills is disappointing on the face of it...but they could more than make up for it by 1) making the skills meaningful 2) implementing perks well.

yes and I am really glad for this, I want my character to be based on my experiences in the game not what I chose in the beginning when I know nothing about it

It was said in GI magazine that classes are gone and all characters start the same.
However, leveling up skills gets so much slower later that you end up specializing in only some anyway.
And the Radiant Story Feature follows your play-style to give you appropriate quests so warriors will more often get warrior quests, Assassins Assassin quests, etc.

If you think about it, in some ways, a class system is an antithesis to the freedom of an open world game.

Given what has been said, I'd guess that your character will develop in a more fluid, natural way.

Oh! *embarrassed* I didn't realize this, I'm sorry.

Thank you for the threads.

Oh, you are talking about those specific named pre-made categories (Nightblade, Monk, etc), not skills/attributes. I misunderstood.
I never really used those pre-made things. I just made my own based on what skills and attributes I would be using myself.

18 skills are fine, I think. Perhaps this will allow the skills to be more indepth and, like you said, have some interesting perks as well. =)

Sorry that I made an unnecessary thread, but I did search through the first five pages and found no titles referring to classes, so I didn't know that it was being discussed.

Yes and no what about changing midway ? To complement with another class skill your character.
If radiant only give you missions related to warrior mage and thief, then what of hybrids ?
And how will they, i hope they have tought of that, stop a mage for example that keep casting the same spell time and again meaningfullessly just to speed up.Well i shouldn t care you say, but thosekind of people are the one that cry and then end destroying entire systems that where balanced over all the aspects of the system.
The assembling of this 2 pieces are more restrictive than the begin one way and build what you want attributes/skills based gameplay, or at least it what it seems.

Assembling the pieces is more important than looking at only 1 aspect.
So far we got few information but many ??? are surging due to how the combinations seems to lack proper integration.

As said before, its all behind the scene stuff.

Besides yor character's class you can make up in your head and use those skills accordingly.
Just remember if you want to level fast you will have to focus on your higher skills.

I tend to just go with the game, and see what I end up becoming.
You know thats sounds like good fun, I'll just do whatever and whatever skills I enjoy using I'll develope a class name around those # of skills I like to level.

And if you plan on becoming a thief, just level your sneak or work on your speechcraft/mercantile.
Warrior? level your 1-2 handed weaponry skills.
etc

It still all sounds iffy to me. I could see how not having a class could help, it's just that it seems that the more they keep simplifying (This IS a simplification.) aspects of the game the less it seems like Elder Scrolls to me.

yes its true, their needs to be something similar to a class, because i want their to be background questions based on it like in daggerfall

I always created my own class anyways to pick my skills how i wanted. I guess the new system is a modified way of that. You still pick and choose how your character is to be played, what your strengths are, how you want to do combat. etc.

It's not simplifying -- it's streamlining . They're making it more sensible, more intuitive, more good!

Finally they're getting rid of the restrictive system where what you can aspire to is predetermined from the start because of some imperial paperwork you filled out or some BS you told a guy you just met in a dungeon after being ambushed by a group of hooded zealots.
