No classes, ok. But what about class names?

Post » Thu Sep 30, 2010 1:25 am

Ok, the title might be a little confusing.
Bethesda said there won't be any classes to choose from, instead you are free to skill whatever skills you want your character to have.
But what if you still get a class name depending on the combination of skills you've chosen.
I was thinking about something similar as in http://www.titancalc.com/.
This would be solely cosmetic. Your class name won't restrict nor unlock skills.
It just gives your something to identify your character's "class" and make it easier to share builds with other players.

I thought it would be something similar ro dungeon runners, Or maybe we won't have class names at all this time around, were they confirmed in?

As long as I get to pick my class name. I dont want to be one of many "Warriors", but instead want to be the one and only "Reaper Overlord of Doom".

It's a shame, really.

For you, no.

Since there's no more classes having class names would not be something I'd want.

the classes as you say in the previous games were nothing but templates of skill usage.

I would like to name my character class as I too dont want to be called warrior, mage, whatever.... or in my case Nightblade.

all they were, are a pick of skills and nothing more...

but if I cant, its not a game killer

If they do allow class names I hope they give us a few extra characters (letters). I hated it that a cool class name that I used in Morrowind would be 1 or 2 letters too long to use in Oblivion.

Agreed.
Without classes, class names would seem a bit out of place. Especially as something cosmetic that would likely not fit the image I have of my character.

I'd like my character to be a self-proclaimed Archer, Agent, or Coffee Table. But I don't see it happening.

Would be nice if some semblance of a class system still existed within the Creation Kit for making skill "template" NPCs, however.

Fable had this... and it svcked. I got a class name like spell-warrior or something, when evil demon-mage-knight-of-awesomeness-and-power. I don't want this in Skyrim.

Meh, doesn't bother me. My immersion doesn't break after people not calling me a Knight. I know what I am, and if a few people say I look handy with a sword...well fantastic. No idea how they can tell that without seeing me fight...but hey, they said something about me. I'd rather not get forced to choose a class so people somehow all know what to call me. Why is one of a knights major skill restoration anyway? I'm a black knight, not a holy one going around healing people.

Now you are what you use. That's so much more TES-like it's a amazing, and I'm all for it. Let me make up my own class on the fly, instead of choosing something at the beginning.

On a side note...people in Oblivion tell me I look like I'm good at alteration. How does one look good at alteration?

It would be great if the game came up with a name based on your actions and skills, but with 18 skills I think there will be too many combinations for it to be satisfying.

The Guild Ranks/Titles are enough for me.

Why even need a class name? Just figure out somthing you would want ot be called, and there you go. maybe that's just me, I always just rped what i wanted to be. Im actually glad classes are gone, so now i dont have to worry about misc/ minor/ major skill balence, i can just play the game based on what I want to do more.

Just try harder. You don't need a stats page saying you are a 'Witchhunter' to RP as one :P.

One good reason please.

Dude, classes were totally useless and did not add to the immersion at all.
What has better immersion?
When you choose already pre-made class or when you make one yourself?
I like that they have removed pre-made classes since they were useless anyway.
Being able to name my class and character is actually best for immersion.
Total support for being able to name your class.
Really don't see a reason why I should not be able to do that.

because its an unnecessary label, even though im playing a game i dont need stuff reminding me of it and that label reminds me im playing a game

i can understand other rpgs having classes because it determines your appearance/stats/skills, in OB it determines your major skills, what would it do in skyrim?
-is it like a title that the whole world knows? if it is then i must svck as an assassin/thief because everyone knows what i do
-is it something that only i know? if it is why would i need it? surely i know what i am without a game telling me by giving me that dragged out, cliche label that would, in my opinion, only oversimplify my character

once i choose a class, it 'forces' me to a certain playstyle from then on
