No Classes - Glad, But Not Glad

The very wealthy have ALWAYS been able to change classes fairly easily. Why do you think so many actors can become politicians, or sports stars actors, etc.

Haha, fair point. Maybe biting social satire is another string Morrowind can add to its bow.

The class system did his job well in older rpgs where role-playing was very simple. In the majority of old rpgs you could choose an healer class but you would spend your time killing things to get xp and raise level. Even thieves were nothing more than stealth fighters. In modern rpgs that class system becomes too restrictive because a character is not what the player wishes to be but how he plays and how the other factions and important npcs react to the player.

Simply put what character you are depends on how you play and how npcs see you and not what your class says you are.

True enough. To be honest, half of my Morrowind games I chose Speechcraft as a major skill so that I could quickly be good enough to taunt Ordinators, sell all their armor, and power level using trainers.

Does anybody know if NPCs will have classes? Or will all NPCs have actual names and just wield different weapons and armor?

To be fair, it's easy to switch between "fame" classes, since recognizability & fame overlap for all of those (actor / politician / sports star).

Switching from actor to, say, nuclear physicist.... that takes a bit more work. :D

I'm pretty happy with the way Todd explained their reasoning for getting rid of class systems. I guess it goes both ways. On the one hand, classes bring uniqueness to a character. But without it, your character can be shaped into a class of its own.

Yea, I recognize that. But if you're rich you can open up a laboratory and hire those guys and get partial credit for stuff they do

Only problem I see, is I dont want my character ending up "god". I dont want me magic only character to be able to just switch to a melee character on a whim.

Ya I think the same my old character in Oblivion was too "godly" that the game wasn't even fun, so i had to make the difficulty very hard, witch didn't make difference for me

I have a feeling they willhave "classes" in that they will have randomly generated stats based on level and skills that are supposed to be involved in that class. But I don't think they will have major skills or anything.

No longer will you only level up when using major/minor skills, so now if you've built a Mage character and decide you want to be a mage/fighter you can shift mid-game with no penalty

Perks. You can switch to melee but you won't be nearly as good as your mage spec was since you will be missing all the perks you put into magic-skills.

BTW - You could do this "switch" in Oblivion but it just wouldn't level you, that imo was even more haxed/powerful.

Yes, perks are there to help you specialize. I was pointing out a difference in the dynamic nature of play style for Skyrim vs. Oblivion.

I have no clue what 'haxed' means. I believe I already referenced how it worked in Oblivion

I'd guess he means "overpowered".... since you could happily level up your (example) Blade & Light Armor to high levels, while your character level (and the enemies around you) didn't get any higher.

After my first Oblivion game I always went with custom characters. I'm wondering how this will work now because I always go Magic/Combat and when you level you pick one. Maybe I'll have to alternate between them? If the initial skill levels are altered by tagging three skills when you start, that would be like Fallout and that's fine by me. I usually wanted to choose six though because they all end up being important at some point. :)

Does anyone have a link to that interview with Todd talking about the Class changes? Thanks.

ADDED: Nevermind, I found it. Here it is in case anyone else would like to read it.

I'll have fun with different characters until a mod comes out that removes the level caps...then I will start my god character who does everything.

Oh, so he means 'the only way around the broken leveling system'. I guess I can agree
