No Classes - Glad, But Not Glad

Post » Tue Mar 01, 2011 5:05 pm

I suppose I'm probably one of the few who are bummed that the whole class element is being taken out of Elder Scrolls. For me, it gave the game a unique feel. Especially in Morrowind because of the huge list of skills I had to choose just a few from. I really hope they don't take out the Birth Signs too, but I haven't heard anything about that yet.

However, I am glad about one aspect of losing the class system: No more stealth, magic and combat specialization.

I thought it was kind of pointless for them to make you choose one fighting style to specialize in, which would then make the other two fighting types a pain to develop. I always prefer specializing in combat, but I've also always wanted to create a strong Destruction character. Unfortunately, Destruction leveled up slow as hell in Oblivion, and if you didn't specialize in magic... well, I wasn't willing to spend hours of my time casting spells in a corner just so I could get my destruction to 100.
So I guess I can't say that I'm really all that bummed about leaving classes behind.

Were any of you guys disappointed when Bethesda announced the end of the class system? What are you guys going to miss from it?

I wasn't disappointed at all. With the class system gone, you won't be playing 2 hours later and go "Doh! I don't like this class!" and you'd start over. This is what Bethesda intended for, so if you messed up, you didn't have to start over.

And there still is specialization in game, it's called perks. ;)

I was kind of sad. After all, classes have been a part of TES games for a while now. I think they know what they are doing though so it should all work out fine. I just wonder if players will choose a core set of skills or if they all just start at the same low level and you have to work your way up.

I'm actually kind of happy that they got rid of the class system, because like somebody else said it tends to make me want to restart a lot when I make a class and then a few hours later decide I don't like it and restart just to try and find a class that suits my character. Maybe this time I won't restart so much as I can just picture my character's class in my head and change it when I feel like playing something different, like in Fallout 3.

TES games (ever since Daggerfall anyway) always were big about character customization. Classes were too restrictive, so you could create your own. Classes were still included to help replayability, so your character won't be a demigod who mastered anything... well you can't get there easily.

Removing classes helped a lot, you could always (especially if you're new to the game) pick a skill that you think would be good, but you'll never use, or in Oblivion's case, levels you up way too fast. Now you can easily experiment with other skills, and stick to them if you like them, and the perk system will make sure you won't be overpowered.

I am happy for this, because it's something different. Even if it doesn't work out at least they have tried. Seeing they are going with it, I am sure it will work other wise, Todd and Bethesda can't be that stupid now in putting something out that will not work.

I am also hoping this will stop Restartitis now and I will go through one character from begining to end. I have played over 500 hours of Morrowind and Oblivion (yes I know not alot) but never finished because I keep restarting all the time, so I am looking forward to this new system.

You know tho, it kind of strikes me as odd (and a little frustrating) that we can't start the game with higher skills. If I want to start the game with someone who's good with swords and not so good with magick, that should be possible. It would seem a little tedious to have to level up all skills from their lowest racial point, and the only way that would be possible to is to have a multitude of easily defeatable enemies, which I can only imagine would be implemented with level scaling, even if it is only of the "radiant story" variety.

this new system also helps prevent the minor-skill level "exploiting" in Oblivion.

just use what skills your class would normally use. theres no difference except for the added benefit of perks.

Not really upset in the slightest. You are what you are. Start from nothing and work your way up. Perks will act as the walls that separate characters, but growing into the glasses will be a lot more natural now. Before you told the game you were a knight, and then you grew into the preordained spot. Now you're just you, and you grow into being a knight if you wish to be.

Its like finding the right job. When you go to college to learn, possibly with a goal like accountant in mind, you're not garentied to become an accountaint. You gain skills an accountant may use in class, but before you become a junior you may decide to switch your goal from accountant to a Business Administrater. You still keep the skills you gained, but now they're focused in a different way, and you may need to work on different skills.

Its a lot like that now. You may plan on becoming a knight when you start, but you may find this really cool spell you like to use. Instead of working up your distruction skill and using that spell instead of a shield but finding yourself still stuck as a knight for some reason, the game will adapt and allow you to switch to a spellsword naturally.

I think it's pretty consensual in this forum that the removal of classes is overall a good thing. At first i was kinda perturbed too, but then once i realized all the implications of getting rid of classes i was pretty happy.

I think the perk system is how you'll define your character now.

From what I've read, the perk system will give us greater control over developing our character. Sounds good to me.

I cant wait to find out about the perk system, Will there be a perk for every skill available at every level up, so I can use destruction but take perks in 2 handed weapons so I can use these later on? or will perks only be available that are relevant to the level of the skill they are in.

for example

if my character is level 25 I get access to all level 25 skill perks whatever the level of the skill

or will I only get access to level 25 perks for skills that are at or above level 25 lists.

At first I didn't like the idea of loosing classes because it seemed to be something that was a huge part of Elder Scrolls for me.

But the more I thought about it the more it made sense. I think I'm going to like it much more than having to recreate characters after playing for hours only to realize which skills I don't really use.

Id rather have classes. Even though I made unique classes, I'd prefer classes.
