Those games are turn-based.

Oh... Real Time Strategy DUH I can be a dummy at times. Well it was a strategy game none the less, same concept as an RTS resources, need buildings to build units.

Oh my, Empire Earth was my childhood game, after NES and Playstation 1, of course.

Another one was Age of Mythology (RTS) -- that was a great game. I put a lot of time into that.

Although, I must say that Empire Earth 1 was the best RTS I have ever played. Although, this is probably due to my childhood association to it.

Besides PC, there was... Advanced Wars? I believe... That was on the gameboy advance. That was pretty cool too.

It might be comforting to know that Heroes of Might & Magic creator Van Caneghem is leading the new studio Victory Games who are now responsible for the C&C franchise. Haven't heard any news in forever, but that's probably a good sign.

It's a shame that developers think classic-style RTS nowadays should only cater to the competitive super hardcoe niche. I have been a fan of the genre since the C&C1 and Warcraft days, yet I have never liked focusing on stuff like strict build orders, micromanagement, etc. This is why I don't like Starcraft, Red Alert 3, and especially not Warcraft 3 with its focus on heroes.

I also enjoy multiplayer matches where the tides can turn suddenly and at any time. Some of my best memories are from Red Alert 2 LAN sessions where this happened quite often.

mmmm, I wish the WC3 community didn't turn to heroes like it did. Now it's only fun to play with friends who don't all go Blademaster (lawl) as per our agreements of "no dumb [censored] allowed!" in the games, hehe.

Frozen Throne will likely always be my favorite though, and it has a really good campaign compared to lots of RTS games IMO. Plus there are always custom games to keep you busy.

The campaigns in Warcraft 3 were another thing I really disliked, again because of the hero focus. Way too many missions where you're just babysitting your hero unit through mazes/dungeons. It made the game ultimately feel more like a watered down Diablo than an RTS.

The way I looked at it was at least the campaign missions offered some variety in scenario. Most RTS missions are just "kill these guys" with increasingly large starting handicaps as the campaign goes on. In WC3 they actually add some different spice.

EDIT: You are obviously someone who doesn't like heroes so I'm not trying to change your opinion. Just my opinion.

Rise of Legends. RISE OF LEGENDS. Why did nobody mention it? It's only the best RTS ever! Shame people dismissed it because of the scenario, just like Paraworld.

I felt like RoL was really cheesy and knock-off-y compared to RoN. The three made-up races didn't impress me more than the decent collection of world groups in RoN did. I still like RoL, but, eh. I also didn't like the "district-building" city structure, or the way you couldn't progress through ages. A B-minus for effort.

I know you said nothing pre-200, but it's soooo classic.
