[LIST] Clean and Dirty Mods

As many of you know, there is a rather extensive list of mods on the CS Wiki of mods that need to be cleaned, are already clean, or should not be clean. In order to make this information more accessible and easier to discuss, I have decided to post the lists here, as well. Note that this is only a list, not the actual guide. If you don't know how to clean your mods, follow the link below.

Special Cleaning Instructions:


300_White Stallion 4.esp


Requires custom TES4Edit work to fix errors or it can’t be saved. It's too complicated to list here, but it has to do with editing REFR:00092EC9 so that it uses the Upper version of the door and moving the door into the correct position. Copy the coordinates from REFR:020014BE then delete REFR:020014BE. This also applies to the renamed Feudal Empire version.

While we're talking about White Stallion/Feudal Empire, this mod also has a LOT of errors in the AI Packages. They currently have no faction assignments and need to be updated. You can open the mod in the Construction Set and go to AI Packages and find all the ones with null parameters. Change those to have the following two conditions:

Target no, GetFactionRank, LeyawiinFaction, >=, 0.00 AND Target no, GetFactionRank, KnightsWhiteStallion, >=, 0.00

If that is too much for you, you may be better off not using this mod.

Minor update: ElsweyrAnequina.esp has apparently been cleaned up in the November update. I'm not sure how that managed to slip under the radar, considering how popular the mod is.... Well, there's the exact reason I posted this here.

ElsweyrAnequina.esp has been moved to the Already Clean list in both locations.

Reworded a bit. I thought I saw a reference to a January update once, but that might have been tosh. I don't use Elsweyr, myself, so I can't be sure.

Ah, this is a very good list to exist. I shall be adding notes to the unclean mods in BOSS, I think. Thanks for compiling it. Bookmarked for future reference. :)

I cleaned Jan, Jul and Nov 2010 versions of Elsweyr using tes4edit version 2.2.3.

I ran it again and it definitely shows as clean, no identical to master records and no deleted references. Maybe newer versions of tes4edit redoes the clean, I don't know.

@Arkngt: I just tested the Warcry 1.09 ESP myself and came up with 29 ITM records. As I understand, some larger overhaul mods do need some ITM records in order to function properly, so please let me know on that one.

I had reported Elsweyr to be unclean on that list. Iliana had written to me too indicating that mod was clean, but I had checked TES4Edit using the Nov 2010 edition. I had asked other people to verify what they found on cleaning the Nov 2010 versions, but no one had responded. Would be glad to get verification, and I am hoping that I am wrong (and Iliana right) :) I am a big fan of the personality Elsweyr brings to the game. List error for DC Villages.

The Already Cleaned list shows the esp for Villages 1.1b as "Villages1.1b.esp". This is incorrect. It is still "Villages1.1.esp". Same as earlier versions. The difference is that the esp included in version 1.1b (its most current release) of the mod has been pre-cleaned so doesn't need to be ran through TES4edit. There is no "Villages1.1b.esp".

Note that there was a 1.1a version of Villages. It was fairly short-lived. Readme documentation indicate that it too had been pre-cleaned, but I never installed that one so can't say for sure.

The release of Villages 1.1b seems to have been unheralded. Release notes indicate a number of subtle changes since v1.1. Folks still using that version should probably update.

Villages v1.1b was then released with some small tweaks to improve the appearance of each village, partially based on the helpful list of suggestions from Syrcanus on Nexus.

The ESP filename was left unchanged to ensure that those already playing the Villages quests wouldn't have to start again, and to ensure that BOSS didn't need new entries made for a mod already in the masterlist.

StarX Vanilla Vampires Revised.esp


Update: StarX has released beta 2 of his mod as of July 8, 2010, which fixes the following problems. In fact, StarX has already cleaned the mod.

If you run undelete on this .esp the game will crash game when using some mods like UOP due to errors in the mod. After you run undelete, you will see two NULL References in the list of things undeleted. You MUST manually search for REFR:0009D137 & REFR:0009D1A0 and REMOVE both. You can do this by simply typing in the REFR numbers in the FormID search box in TES4Edit. After searching, the REFR will be highlighted in the left side of the program. Right-click on this REFR row and pick "Remove". Do this for both.


I don't think that info is up to date anymore, IIRC I have fixed the NULL refs in the latest version.

So... if I understand the instructions correctly about how to clean:


1. Select the mod .esp (and all dependencies ---> good idea to read the readme to figure these out). Don't tick any mod groups, ever.
1b. Make sure the load order is correct before starting any cleaning. The mod you are to clean must be last in the load order list. So if you have dependencies and such, the load order must be correct. A good idea is to use BOSS after installing the mod, but before starting the cleaning process.
2. Right click on mod to clean > "Apply Filter."
3. Tick "Conflict status inherited by parent", press OK.

4. Right click on mod to clean > “Remove "Identical to Master" records.” Click Yes.
5. Check Messages tab to see what was changed. Could make a copy of the removal log for later review.
6. Right click on mod to clean > "Undelete and Disable References.", don't worry about the details of what was changed by this.

7. Close the program. If mod was clean already, it exits immediately. If mod was dirty, press OK on the box popping up.
8. Could be a good idea to backup the cleaned mod somewhere outside the Oblivion folder.
9. If you know something technical about the now cleaned mod, compare the changes with the original mod. If a copy of the removal log was kept from step 5, use it as a guide. Load the same files as before when cleaning and use the feature "Compare to function" in TES4Edit. If you don't know something technical about the now cleaned mod, this step (9) can be skipped.



So... just wondering, this kind of summarize I did from the http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/TES4Edit_Cleaning_Guide, is this all I need to do?
Btw, thanks for posting this cleaning mod list, I had totally forgotten about stuff like this. A good and important reminder.

Further to the above, it would be best if you note in the "Needs to be Cleaned" section that users of v1.1 should upgrade to the newer version to avoid having to clean themselves, while it be noted in the "Already Clean" section that users of v1.1b do not need to clean, rather than posting a note that v1.1 still needs cleaning, since this is rather confusing, listing in the "Clean" section then saying it still needs cleaning (that's what it appears to say).

As for Elsweyr Anequina, I cannot comment on versions released in Jan/July/November 2010, but the version I just downloaded was from December 2010, and I assume it to be the latest version. Download archive is named ElsweyrAnequinaV3 Dec2010.rar and was on the mirror linked to from the Nexus page for Elsweyr Anequina.
The ESP from this version, named ElsweyrAnequina.esp lists 218 ITM records and 1044 UDR records.

It should however be noted that "undelete and disable" in TES4Edit was changed slightly after it first appeared in TES4Edit, and running it when it was first introduced undeleted, disabled and set Z coordinate to -30,000. After the update to TES4Edit (which happened quite a while ago) the undelete and disable process additionally set Player as parent to undeleted objects and flagged "Set Enable State to Opposite of Parent" - running the undelete & disable process with this update on an ESP which has already had it run with the older version of TES4Edit will redo every record already processed last time to add the Player as parent.

ElsweyrAnequina.esp had already been processed for "undelete and "disable" using the older version of TES4Edit, so most if not all those 1044 records were in fact correctly handled, and are just being relisted as TES4Edit redoes them.

Secondly, more recent releases of TES4Edit detect empty CELL and empty Temporary children of CELL records which are NOT vanilla records from Oblivion.esm and removes them as they are not needed, in an attempt to slightly reduce the size of the ESM or ESP containing them (as larger ESMs and ESPs take longer for the game to process).

The 218 ITM records from ElsweyrAnequina.esp are all empty CELL or Temporary children of CELL records unique to the Elsweyr mod.


So, in summary, those 218 ITM records and 1044 UDR records are really false reports. The mod is clean, it is simply that newer versions of TES4Edit handle the cleaning process slightly more efficiently than older versions, and it was an older version of TES4Edit used to clean it previously.

@Arkngt: I just tested the Warcry 1.09 ESP myself and came up with 29 ITM records. As I understand, some larger overhaul mods do need some ITM records in order to function properly, so please let me know on that one.


I'm pretty sure that what Corepc http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/875610-oblivion-warcry/page__view__findpost__p__15551849 goes for 109 as well, i.e. those are intended. I can double check with him, but he's always careful about such stuff.

@StarX: Updated. SVVM is now in the already clean list and the outdated info on the NULL refs has been removed.

The ITM are intended once again has some things end up getting changed by FCOM mods later on.

anything Cobl, OOO, MMM, Warcry, FCOM related should not be cleaned but reported so that I can check once again and fix for the next Big Release's..

Thanks for clearing that up Vorians. I suspected it had something to do with the newer versions of tes4edit repeating the clean in a slightly different way.

Well the debate over Elsweyr was good for one thing at least. I had no idea there even was a December 2010 update :P


Well, not really an update. The last esp is the one from mid November, but I did repackage the mod in December with most of the files packed into bsa archives.

For confirmation:
My PowerAttack Voicemod is indeed clean as it does not delete excisting references and makes no unintentional edits to any vanilla entries (only a couple of intentional ones). It has been cleaned with TES4Edit as well (undelete and disable + identical to master records) as manual cleaning. This is true for both PowerAttack Voicemod.esp and PowerAttack Voicemod - The Shivering Isles.esp. Safe to use ;)

My Smite of Order (Smite of Order.esp) mod is clean as well, it does not touch vanilla entries at all. I'm not sure about the versions made by jackmix69, but I doubt they're dirty.
