"Clean save procedure" question.....

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 5:41 am

On this page http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Troubleshooting#tab=Mods_and_Savegames
is a step by step procedure to try and "clean" your saves if you had some mods that corrupted your saves.

Long story short, at the end theres a step that says after you turn you Skyrim file back to "0" you load your game and type in the console.

My question is: Do you think he meant ?

I ask this b/c disables the free camera roam and he doesn't say to do that and the first time I did this the procedure didn't work. Maybe b/c the extra typed was messed something up?

Since you're attempting to clean your saves, purging the cell buffer (pcb) would make more sense than messing around with the camera (tfc).

pcb Purge cell buffer This will free up used memory, often times increasing fps after any given amount of time in game. Best used while in interior cells. However, since it purges cached cells, any cells you visited in the recent past will have to be reloaded completely when reentered.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Console

Basically, the game world is divided up into "cells" (or squares) with whole cells only being loaded into memory as you enter them. "pcb" clears (purges) any cell data from memory (buffer).

They probably meant PCB (PurgeCellBuffers) as, in this context, TFC (ToggleFlyCam) makes no sense.

One other question.

I installed "Werewolves of Skyrim" from the Steam Workshop. Long story short, I uninstalled it and the werewolf pelts are still in the game. I did this clean save procedure and put the pelts in a non player safe place.

What I'm getting is random freezing and it onlyl does this with mods active. Thing is the werewolf mod is the only one that isn't just a weather pattern mod and I only have 2 of those and one other mod.

Was thinking uninstalling the wereworlf mod and still having these pelts was messing with the game.

poth pcb and tfc are used in that procedure. On reloading it would be pcb.

tfc is used when waiting 31 days in qasmoke so that it only takes a few minutes rather than 10 minutes or so. There is no other reason to use tfc

Just so you know, werewolf pelts are an unused vanilla game resource, which might explain why they are still in your game despite uninstalling the "Werewolves of Skyrim" mod.

It's also worth noting that just because you do a clean save it doesn't mean that everything goes back to the way it was - it appears in Skyrim at least that the only way to be absolutely sure that your game is free of invalid resources is to go back to a save prior to the one where you originally added the mod that you have now removed, otherwise you can end up with artefacts in your save that can in some circumstances b****r up your game...

Ooops! Im one of the wiki editors for that guide, and looks like we missed a step. There should indeed be another step that instructs you to turn off free camera mode by typing tfc in the console again. Thanks for pointing that out DudeNTheRoom!

And yep, tfc is only used to cut down the waiting time for 31 days to pass, its not essential. You could also read a book or watch paint dry while waiting 10 minutes :P

And PhonAntiPhon is absolutely correct. At the moment there is no way to 100% clean your savegame if you uninstalled mods that use scripts. The clean procedure will reset all spawns (both mob, npc, and item), as well as reset all cells. This helps because it can reduce bloat, and if there is a poorly rendered cell or a bugged spawn it can eliminate those as well. It can somewhat help with the script issues, but only for instance if an item with a modded scripts exists in a cell. Resetting the cell can get rid of that item sometimes, reducing the polling of the leftover scripts. However, the leftover script will still be in your savegame. Bethesda designed papyrus this way in Skyrim, it wasnt like this in Oblivion.

So in case its a massive script issue, your best best is to do as PhonAntiPhon advises.
