Cleaning ESPs - Best application?

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:51 pm

Hi all

I've gone thru the .esp cleaning process once before using TES4Edit following instructions http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/TES4Edit_Cleaning_Guide
Is there a better program to use to do this? If not, I will continue with TES4Edit.

Additionally, is there any harm in cleaning all .esp files at once? Or do they need to be done one at a time?
Is there any known files I should not clean besides the list below?

- Any FCOM files that come in the FCOM archive.
- SM Plugin Refurbish…. (I don't use these anyways as I think they are already included in the UOP Supplemental pack)
- UOP, USIP, UMP

TES4Edit is the best choice for the job. You have to do them one at a time, cleaning with your entire load order being processed won't do a proper job of it, although you CAN do the undelete/disable option that way. Assuming you can deal with waiting however long it would take to filter your entire load order. For me, that takes 20 minutes or so. For others, I'd imagine an hour or longer. Probably just best to stick to doing it one mod at a time.

@far237

I http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1157330-tes4edit-cleaning-guide-on-cs-wiki/ about cleaning that may be of interest to you. The lists in the CS Wiki are pretty reliable and a good starting point as to what is clean and what not. I recently spent a good amount of time reviewing and updating them.

Arthmoor, are you referring the process at the beginning of http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Mod_Cleaning_Tutorial#TES4Edit?
Is this just the manual process for what TES4Edit already does automatically?

What would you say is the easiest way to identify what other mods the mod I am cleaning depends on?
It seems like TES4Edit automatically loads dependent mods, so maybe I don't need to worry about this?

Hmm...

This puts me in mind of a question that's been in the back of my ever-more-feeble mind for some time. Common wisdom, so far as I understand it, is that one does not clean patches. Yet if I'm deciphering the above correctly one can undelete/disable an entire load order in one fell swoop. (Not that I would consider doing it that way.) This, to me, implies that it is indeed safe (and beneficial?) to perform the undelete/disable portion of the cleaning process on patches. If true, is there a preferred undelete/disable cleaning order....patch first then the esps they patch or vice versa?

Thanks in advance!

Undelete/disable can be done on anything and it doesn't matter which order you do them in. It's also safe to undelete/disable patches as well. Probably preferable even since deleted records of any type can lead to crashes (though they don't often).

TES4Edit only loads those dependencies when the mod has them listed as masters. Part of why the advice is to just leave patches alone because they don't always have every master specified. Some patches have none at all and could end up being mistakenly processed as dirty edits when they aren't.

So I assume 'patch' would consist of UL patches, OCC patches, BC patches, or just about any other mod patch out there?

EDIT: Here is the list of mods that ended up requiring cleaning...

Francesco's Leveled Creatures-Items Mod.esm
Francesco's Optional New Items Add-On.esm
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esm
Mart's Monster Mod.esm
Toaster Says Share v3.esm
Colourwheels sixy Female NPCs.esp
xeoex.esp
Francesco's Optional Chance of Stronger Enemies.esp
All Natural - SI.esp
Killtastic! Toggle.esp
QQuix - Rock, rock, rock your ship - V3.esp
DLCMehrunesRazor.esp
DLCSpellTomes.esp
Colourwheels sixy Stock Armor & Clothing Replacer.esp
Slof's Horses Base.esp
Bob's Armory Oblivion.esp
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esp
OBSE-Storms & Sound SI.esp
OOO-No_Guild_Ownership.esp.backup
Oblivion WarCry EV.esp
ImpeREAL Empire - Unique Castles - All The Castles - Merged.esp
Kvatch Rebuilt.esp
DLCFrostcrag.esp
Knights.esp
M.O.E. - Main Quest Delayer.esp
ShippingInCyrodiil_Normal_Lights_V1-1 - With Drawbridges.esp
MidasSpells.esp
Personality Idles - Modified version.esp
DeadlyReflex 6 - Combat Moves.esp

EDIT: It's advised not to clean Personality Idles- Modified version.esp - I experienced issues after doing this. Stuck animations etc...
