Clearing off the cobwebs

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 3:25 pm

Since the better computer (my usual machine) is currently on a time-share system with the release of Skyrim, I've been poking around the (now ancient) machine on which my Morrowind projects live. Unfortunately I've run into a bit of a problem; Morrowind is in a playable state but I've forgotten where I left off. Short of tossing it all and reinstalling, is there some method to determine what is currently in-use in-game and what is currently unaffiliated in-game? My timestamps range from 2002 to 2009, and a good amount seem to be pure (i.e. plugin-less) texture and mesh replacements.

This entire post is a bit silly I know, but I imagine there must be other old-timers out there who have had this same problem. What (if any) methods worked for you? Has a neat little program been written to sort what is and isn't used?

Your Morrowind ini file will list what mods you have installed , and http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=1209&sid=ab751605fbead46df2d74c5d12e72526 will list the mods any old save games are dependant on and should be able to restore any to a working state.ie if not listed on your ini file or needed in your save games then you can delete it as not needed Get back to us if there are any specific problems you have.

What ^^ said. Unless we're not quite understanding what it is you're actually asking.

Oh and it's great to see you around again!

Since plugin-less replacers don't register anything on the .ini, sadly that method won't work. There weren't any save-games since this wasn't a "playing" copy of Morrowind but a "working" copy... I think it may be too far gone though, as I only have a vague idea of what I was trying to accomplish at the time. There may be something salvageable with some finagling but that'll take a bit of time to sort out. What the theoretical program would look for would be orphaned textures/meshes, essentially. I seem to recall one of the tools doing something similar but I could be just making it up at this point.

It's nice to see a lot of familiar names still kicking around. :) Skyrim's subliminal Morrowind music may have triggered the desire to dust off the cobwebs, but there are surely worse fates.

Maybe the docs file could help?

Hmm, maybe one of the mod packaging programs would be of help identifying orphaned meshes and textures - at least in the instances where you have an esp. That's all I've got for you though
