click or hold? not sure best way of casting spells

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 10:27 pm

so, I am playing dark elf with heavy destruction. just hit level 3.

I am not sure if I should cast a spell like flame and hold down mouse button, or if it is better to click cast, then click cast, etc....

is there a difference? sorry this is so basic.

DOT spells like Flames, Sparks or Frostbite, I've had great success and superior damage output by holding down the button for brief periods, releasing, and then hitting it again.

It seems to be more effective at killing the enemy than holding it down all the time.

Read the first word of the title as...something else.

It depends on the spell. If it's a continuous cast, like flames, sparks, frost or healing you hold it down to constantly use it.

Ranged spells like Firebolt, Lightning Bolt, etc are hold and release.

with flames or frostbite i tend to click and hold for 2-3 secs then release then wait a sec or 2 and do again... maybe it's my imagination but i feel it increases the damage output over time

With a channeled spell you do slightly more dps by just holding it, but I think if you hit it in short bursts you have more chance for skillups.

For Flames/Frostbite/Sparks do NOT hold it. Hit it for as short as possible, just enough to hit with the effect then stop. This should take less than 0.5s. After that just wait while their HP drops, once it stops dropping reapply it. This keeps the same DPS as holding it for a fraction of the mana cost.
