Climbing/grapplehook?

Post » Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:02 pm

I'm not sure about a grappling hook, but this game will definitely need some form of climbing. Without it, the world will become very small considering all the space taken up by inaccessible mountainsides. I love the thought of climbing up the mountains of Skyrim, looking for handholds, with a slight possibility of falling to my death if I grab a weak handhold, wondering if I should have taken a path instead of this risky "shortcut". Climbing to hidden dungeons and dragon lairs that cannot be reached by any other means would be awesome too . . .
All that, and the ability to climb buildings in towns would really be great for stealth characters.

At the risk of being tiresome, i'll repeat that climbing really needs to be in the game. Even if we get some walkable mountain paths, we'll still be missing out on the thrills of mountain climbing. It would be a watered down game set in a mountanous region.
It just might happen that everything else in the game turns out great, but i will still have a slight bad taste in my mouth if i'm not able to climb.
Besides, it opens up such a vast horizon of new gameplay possibilities!

When I came to this thread I thought it was going to be one person saying "I want a grappling hook!" and everyone else calling him stupid. But now that I read it, I want it too. I would say Ice Axes would be more fitting, used somehow like the guy that mentioned Modern Warfare 2 said.

Maybe one of the perks will allow the player to carry a ladder? :shakehead:

P-Froggy implemented a basic and working climbing system to Oblivion, which became absolutely inseparable from my game install. Being able to climb everything was strange but better than absolutely nothing as it was before.

Bethesda - please remember fighters and mages aren't the only two to appeal to. There are a lot of applications for climbing, and in my honest opinion is essential to the Stealth occupation.

The Grappling Hook, and for that matter things like Whips ala Indiana Jones, would be a cool addition to the game. Of course they could be used for getting around or over or across things. But they could also be used to get things that are just a bit too far away to grab. They could also be used as a limited weapon. If we had NPCs that "Run Away", then we could use the Grapple or Whip to trip them up.

I was just playing Just Cause 2, and while this game is great, it seem to be way to easy and unrealistic in how the protagonist gets around steep mountains. However, a grapplehook could be a great idea for the mountainriddled skyrim. Ofcourse it shouldn't be as easy in use as in JC2, but they could make it a two handed weapon/tool. When equiped, your character would be able to wind up, and throw it in the air, hoping it will be caught by a rock. After a little test-pull, your character will be able to slowly but steadily make his way up on the mountain.

Things like this could make for interesting exploration in the mountains and contributes to emersion. What do you think?

If we could also have a parachute, and other things it would be,... JC2, TES style...

But a Dwemer kind of grapling hook would be ok... But we have more chance to see that as a Mod.

Your the first person to have the same thought as me. I dont know if youve ever climbed before but the rush from it could easily transfered very well to oblivion. The fact that you COULD fall to your death because your climbing skill is too low would be so awesome. Definitely something that should be added in to this game. Think about it.. only assassins creed has done climbing to a good level of detail but they havent done rock face climbing. if bethesda implemented it, id be so incredibly happy.

I will even take a simple system where you can jump and grab to ledges.
