Climbing instead of jumping?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:57 am

Do you think that jumping should be replaced by climbing In Skyrim? I think that jumping doesn't make much sense in a rather low-fantasy game since it is a skill you hardly need in real life. It should only be available to overcome gaps (no riddiculous floating please).
On the other hand, climbing could be extremly useful in the mountainous province of Skyrim and it would look much more realistic when overcoming obstacles.

What do you think?

Realistic jumping (no moon jumps), and the ability to grab on to ledges and pull yourself up. I don't need mountain-climbing but I wouldn't be opposed to it... I think it's kinda confirmed to be out by Pete Hines a while ago though.

Hell no... In world where I can do whatever I want, wield fire magic, slay bad ass creatures, etc... I don't have the simple ability to jump?

What do you have against jumping?

Obviously everyone wants both.

I agree on one point though: The floating when jumping thing. They'll fix it though for sure.

I'd like to see jumping more of a requirement to the dungeon crawls. These ancient ruins and caves aren't going to be in perfect shape for human travel after all...

You can jump anytime anywhere in Assassins Creed fyi

But I wouldn't mind some vaulting system. And actual working ladders

We should have both.

As to how would jumping work? Really? You push a particular key and your character jumps.

Yes, you can always jump in AC, but not very high (in gaming terms) and ledges are the only place where it is useful. Maybe Arkham Asylum is a better example for this kind of jumping.

EDIT: A running jump should also be necessary to Jump efficiently.

Well as others said anything beats the 0 gravity jumps found in previous titles. AC actually did pretty well in jumping category considering of course their spider man part was a bit exaggerated xD

THAT is what this thread should have been about... that's something i never thought of for TES, but very cool.

OFF TOPIC: I hope there is no changing direction in midair... that [censored] was ridiculous

Im hoping there will be both, I would love to be able to climb mountains, from the trailer it looks like there is going to be some real steep ones, climbing to the top would be awesome. Imagine the view!

I think the jumping in morrowind and oblivion was kindof rediculous but jumping still needs to be there. If you can't jump in a videogame I always end up feeling confined...

Proper climbing would be pretty cool. Makes being an assassin much more fun if you can climb out of the reach of guards etc.

jumping is one of my favorite things to do in RPGs! i like to do it kuz IRL i'd look like a fool jumping around everywhere!
this is one of my pet peeves about bioware RPGs and the witcher... in those games you can't jump, EVER! the only thing SPACEBAR does is pause the game... that ain't cool.
i voted for NO, to your "climbing INSTEAD of jumping" which if i had to choose i'd jump, but i'd like BOTH!
i also noticed someone saw something about being able to jump to a ledge and pull yourself up, that'd be awesome too :) especially in 1st person :D

Daggerfall had it perfect. Realistic jumps and climbing to get over anything tall.

The ability to jump high anywhere at anytime depending on my build and climbing. Climbing has been confirmed out, so I want the ability to jump high and run fast since that is realistic for Nirn.

I don't particularly care for mountain climbing. All I want is a fluid jumping system and the ability to climb/grab ledges. To jump forward I should need to be moving, to jump far forward I should need to be sprinting. I shouldn't be able to change direction mid jump and I shouldn't bang my head into ceilings because I went down some stairs too far and started floating. This would add another dimension to dungeons too since they could have decent acrobatic challenges as well.
