Climbing system?

I would love this, anything that increases the immersion factor is great.

I would suspect there would be dungeons in the mountain face. There are just too many mountains for there not to be a couple of dozen or more of dragon liars or dungeons in the mountains themselves.

So in this case, we would need to have a climbing skill or ability to get up to these entrances. I don't see having many mountain paths because that would give the entrances away. It should be something that you have to climb and search for. With the reward being nice armor/weapons or new shout to learn on a wall. The risks is your ultimate death by slipping off the mountain side if you can not get the hang of mountain climbing.

True, but if you are going to place mountains on 15% or more of the map, then there better be more to them than aesthetic boundaries.
Climbing a few to find caves or hidden entrances seems logical.

I dont think it will happen though bethesda has been trying to get ladders in their games for the past 3, it would be awesome if it happened just not much chance

Not to mention you could climb up most anything in Daggerfall. A city wall, a house, pretty much any vertical surface as long as you were skilled in it.

Some wishful mechanics for mountain climbing.

To climb a mountain you need to push a button to jump up and then press and hold the same button to latch on to the mountain face.
You have to continue to hold that button to hold on to the mountain, once the button is released you loosen your grip and drop.

Two separate buttons will be used to alternate left hand and right hand climbing motions. A look anolog control will be used to control which direction you go. Also you must monitor your hand grip on the rocks and if you see either hand start to slip, you need to quickly press a recover button or you will fall.

There could be different mountain difficulties, K1, K2, K3.

Your skill or ability in climbing and the difficulty rating of the mountain can determine how often you start to loose your grip and how long you can delay before you have to recover.

This is all just wishful thinking:)

Unless you can use weapons on the ladders/ropes, no.

Dunno if that is a good idea... depends on how it would be implemented, I suppose.

Not just yes but god yes. Climbing and getting to unaccessable areas has always been something that I think has been missing from TES games. A grappling hook and maybe some climbing axes would make the worlds so much more 3 dimensional. Especially since levitate was removed. That was one of the coolest things about morrowind.

I'd like it in the game, provided it didn't allow scaling of sheer surfaces or negative slopes. I would have actually preferred it to be skill based, the higher your value the more vertical the slope you could ascend. Animation-wise I don't think it should be that hard since they are using Havoc Behavior. It would be a shame if we couldn't scale rough faced cliffs to steal an eagle's egg or reach the hidden entrance to a long-forgotten cave...

I would love a climbing/parkour system, if it was well integrated with the rest of the game. I'd like to see some enemies using parkour elements against me and have it be an integral part of some thieving missions or exploration, etc.; I'd like level design that reflected the mechanic. However, even Mirror's Edge - a game designed from the ground up for parkour - didn't quite get the parkour system right, so I don't think Bethesda could really get this in and right in the time before release.

That said, even if it were an incredibly basic implementation, I would enjoy a parkour system. You know how some people like blowing creatures up with virtual fireballs? I like doing virtual wall runs.

I think they should rather bring back levitation, yes. That would be cool especially because the landscape is quite mountanous.

Just wondering, who would like a climbing/parkour system in Skyrim? I mean if it was done well, something similar (though probably simpler) to Assassin's creed or Mirrors Edge could be very awesome IMO, especially if they integrated it with other game mechanics. I mean there's plenty of mountains, cliffs and forts in Skyrim right? It'd be more fun then climbing by running up slighter slopes and blocking jumping. I know they probably will not have one, but just hypothetically, what do you think?

Are you kidding me? Hell yes.

I never played Daggerfall, but climbing does sound like a cool feature. I am curious to see how this havok behaviour system works. Hopefully, climbing will be a feature. Even if its a perk you have to get first.

Would be really really cool. I definitely want this. I hope it's in already. If not, I want Bethesda to focus on getting it in before 11/11/11 :P

It would be nice to have some basic climbing ability, but I suspect it won't happen for the same reason there were no useable ladders in Oblivion. NPCs can't use them. Is the player character going to be the only one with the ability to climb?

I would like sort of a more in depth system.

Kinda like using the left and right triggers to climb. Left right, left right, left right.

I hope we have at least usable ladders. Other games have npcs that use ladders, so surely Bethesda can do it for this...surely.

WOAH! I asked this way back in early December! Anyway, climbing is perfect for stealth characters in TES!

Of course they can. They could have done it in Oblivion too.

If you can't climb in Skyrim I would find it a bit strange. Even Red Dead Redemption had climbing and that game doesn't nearly need it as much as Skyrim imo :P
There are so many mountains in Skyrim so it would be really great. Also just imagine how it would be great for stealth characters. Climb up some rocks or some place or ladder and shoot people with your bow :)

Bethesda is also a lot better with animations now, which was very different before with Oblivion. I don't see why not to add it now. It would definitely be worth implementing climbing in Skyrim imo.

Why would NPCS not be able to use them? Beth said it was an animation issue if I recall. NPCs use ladders in tons of games. It's just not something they've tried to focus on in TES thus far, but there's nothing to stop them from starting (same applies to climbing non-ladder objects).

BTW I realise it's too late for climbing (except maybe ladders) in Skyrim now.
