climbing

Post » Wed Jan 26, 2011 11:59 pm

couldn't help but notice in the screenshots that the mountains this time around are a heck of a lot more rugged and steep than they were in oblivion, and personally i'd hate for it to be like fallout where they just served as barriers. so that raised the question: should there be a climbing skill and/or mechanic?

haha because i seriously doubt that we will be able to do the old "walk slightly uphill and along a mountain side and gain altitude by jumping on cliffside rocks to get to the highest peak on the Jerall mountains by exploiting oblivions arguably mediocre navigation mechanics" trick. which we have probably all done.... or maybe i'm just wierd :whistling:

but what do you guys think?

Edit: i think if they do it, it should only be done if its done right. just putting that out there haha

I said "no" simply because since there already are only 18 skills. To me, there are just more important things that I would want before climbing.

I think it would have taken way too much time to do and it would probably be very buggy.

Would be a nice throw back to Daggerfall.

I'd like to see some type of climbing.

No you're not weird, I'm guilty of that too.

I hate it when a poll thread gets tons of votes and nobody discusses anything...

It'd be hard to do with only 18 skills but I really hope that it's implemented somehow, maybe tied into one of the other skills. I voted yes but I can't see an obvious way of how they can do it well with only the 18 skills sadly.

They already messed up in Morrowind by having hills and mountains everywhere with no climbing skill or climbing method, surely they won't botch that again. Hehe.

Don't run to levitate, I also want that, but us thieving types need a magic free climbing method.

Climbing could be good, but I would hate to see Fallout NV barriors that got on my nerves if I see it I want to reach the top thats just the way it is...

hope so, but i dont think it is plausible, maybe on only ladders and stuff, then I think it would be possible, but no scaling buildings, that would probably take way too long to make, or not, I really dont know

I have a feeling its too late for them to try implementing this if they haven't already...and I don't think they have.
I'm not sure if I would use it much. I also doubt that they would spend time on this where it could be applied to other areas of the game. When other titles like Assassin's Creed focus so much on climbing, it doesn't seem worth it. People would just complain about how its not as good as it should be...

No, I can't think of any reason anyone, aside from D&D players, to want it. Walking up mountains in a weird and funny looking way is ok, and I don't see the sense of climbing up tress, unless they are unusually big. I don't think it'd hurt the game to add it, but it's not one of the things I would JUMP at with joy.

I voted Yes. Reason being we've seen large mountainlike masses blocking our way in New Vegas(And just rock masses in FO3) We saw how sloppily getting around them was, and climbing them with the weird physics was a waste of time. Seeing as Skyrim has true mountains with a new engine, along with a spell to levitate in the sky a way to climb rocks would be nice, aka be able to climb with equipment or maybe even somehow magically allow your hands and feet to grapple to the rock as you climb up.

The need for a climbing mechanic I most wanted in Mexico in RDR. Actually there is no need. I just had a feel to want to climb the beautiful rocks that had been formed there. It hasn't been fulfilled yet.

I think some will get the same fuel to climb mountains rather than get over them, or climb them for the sake of the objective or the view.

So yes, climbing would be a nice skill.

And well I'm looking it more so rock climbing or climbing up an object(Think not being able to get up into Jefferson memorial from the bottom case. If there was a parkour-esque movement you could most likely grab the ledge and hoist yourself up)

Due to it being Skyrim I'd imagine climbing is a want just because sloppily getting through them is boring plus mountains kind of express a picture of extreme climbing to great heights on a mountain range with snow blurring everywhere

I change my earlier vote, you have a very good point and I do see it as a capable possibility.

It's unlikely to be in, at least in any complex form, as suggested bythat tweet (someone asked about climbing, they responded "*Shakes magic 8 ball* Outlook not so good") but personally I owuld love it. It would add somuch more to being a stealth character. I hope at least we can pull ourselves up onto ledges that we jump at and trudge slwoly up steeper slopes that would be nontraversable in oblivion.

You can't imagine a single reason someone would want it?

-Non glitchy and silly mountain climbing
-Reaching difficult to reach areas
-Escaping from guards
-Finding vantage points for marksmen
-hiding from enemies
-more immersion
-Not being blocked by stupid barriers

daggerfall mechanics had climbing. if only that game was made to be GRAPHICALLY ahead of its time.
god, i wish i wasnt spoiled by hd and newfangled game mechanics. that is such a good game.

and yes, climbing should just be added into athletics skill.
i wouldn't be surprised if it was in the game.

Voted "No," but a more accurate vote would be "Only if it were the 19th skill, we're getting low enough on those as it is thank you very much."
