Cloaks and Capes!

Post » Sun Jun 06, 2010 10:21 pm

I have seen many people talking about capes and cloaks, i realize they are most likely not in the game but if they were would you want them to be like a piece of armor, with an armor rating, and the ability to be enchanted, or JUST for visual purposes?

I would prefer the latter. I think cloaks would make sense, as to deal with the very cold weather in skyrim, but should serve no other purpose than roleplaying in my opinion.

I wouldnt want it to be enchantable or have an armour rating because i wouldnt want people that dont want to use a cloak to be at a disadvantage, or make it replace an accessory slot, such as a ring, so you could wear 2 rings, or a ring and a cloak (then i wouldnt mind enchanting)

armor rating of 1 and enchantable would be awesome. a cloak over my stealth char would be great.

if somethings coming at you with an axe then a cape shouldnt have armour properties unless its been enchanted.
But they should defonatly be in the game, theyre visualy stunning to have!

I vote for visual because I also think it's an aesthetic thing and don't want to feel like I should wear one just because it's enchant-able, though I would like them in game.

edit - unless maybe there's a cloak of invisibility, in which case it's no longer an aesthetic thing, being invisible :o

I want them to be enchantable. I intend to create a very powerful mage character.

If you're worried about enchantments making there be an incentive for every character to wear one, no matter what, then why not just make them have quite low enchantment points? This solves both issues, I think:

1. If you choose to not wear a cloak, for whatever reason, you're not really "punishing" your character.
2. It doesn't make cloaks this weird, unusual, non-enchantable bit of clothing - unlike everything else you can wear.

Edit: and besides, the number of enchantment points has tended to be pretty arbitrary anyway, apart from the general more expensive = more enchantment points formula.

But if there's already enchanted cloaks in the game then you might want to wear one just for its enchantment, even if you don't like the look of it. I would only be fine with a cloak of invisibility included as one you could find, plus invisibility wears off once you fight, in Morrowind and Oblivion at least.

Same principle: just don't make them too powerful.

Why should something you can equip not be possible to enchant? you would have to add a check in the enchanting menu, If (selecteditem.type==cape) then alert("You can not enchant capes!!!");

For armor rating no it makes little sense, the purpose of capes is that if the user is running away the opponent grab the edge of the cape pull him backward and cut of his head with a sword. Knowledge of this stops people from running away from a hopeless fight :)

It would be good if they are enchantable, IMO it wouldn't make sense for them to have an armour rating though.

I was thinking of finding already enchanted capes in the game, which I don't want unless it's for specific yet not overpowering purposes, like invisibility, as long as you're not in combat.

I see, so someone not worthy of wearing a cape to begin with would be at a hopeless disadvantage ^_^

I would like the ability to enchant cloaks, but without an armor rating because it will inevitably need to be repaired. Would rather an enchantment with constant fortify armor, or other properties like agility or feather.

I would want them to be enchantable piece of equipment like clothing, there can be some accessory slots in game not need to make them strict to cloaks and capes, the same slot can be usable for different things.

I want capes so much, but i don′t think Skyrim will have capes.

Because, all the pics i saw and also in the new gameplay trailer i could not find any evidence of dynamic cloth simulations.

And you know... No cloths simulation = no Capes at all... :sadvaultboy:

No armour, enchantable.

If some wish to enchant every item for every character I don't care, I don't, often I don't enchant anything.

right , if the cloak or cape could be enchantable and have a armour rating, it would be a good reason to wear them, even tough i thing every armoured knight SHOULD have a very long and completely badass red cape flying in the wind, the only thing that concern me about that aproach is the physics, how would they work in skyrim, i seriously have no idea if cloth has any physics at all, so capes would look rather.. stupid, like they did in two worlds 2, or they would have to be animated, maybe not looking that great, maybe the aproach used in batman arkahm asylum, less strange, would be perfect for third persons, but who knows.. if they manage to use somenthing like havok or anything like that to make the capes physics actually looks realistic, i would definitly aprove their existence!

Well thats not right, no cloth simulation mean no cloth simulation, capes can be done in different ways like animation of special clothes bones or rigging to skeleton.
For example Oblivion Lich have tail bones, dangle bones for wrists, pauldron bones but NPC and player character skeleton doesn't have them
With mod thats add lich bones to character skeleton can be done cloth movements like this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEHus6LBg3s
Without separate bones and animation there can be capes like this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNBu1w3Qqjk
Thats best what can be done with rigging to vanila skeleton.

You have a point... I got some cape mod to play in Oblivion, but it was really awfull without any animation /simulation... it was 100% rigid... these mods you point me looks much better... But still, nothing like a cloth simulation as we can see in some games like Assassins Creed... And having dynamic winds in Skyrim, the cloth simulations would be so welcome...

But i still don′t believe we will have capes in Skyrim... unfortunately...
