We are all hoping maybe they will listen to you

Who knows, maybe they will. I'm pretty sure the developers read some of these threads, lookin for ideas or possible issues.

There is one major benefit that public open beta's have... besides the obvious buzz generated (which in the case of MoH actually backfired LOLOLOL)

that is the Griefing test.

The ONLY way to find griefer flaws in your game is to release it to the public.

Only by letting THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of people play will you be sure to get the relatively small population of griefer players who spend untold hours trying all kinds of bizzare feats in order to exploit the game for their own advantage.

If you wait until release before letting the public have a first go at it... you will be reacting right out of the gate.... It's MUCH better to have an idea of what people are doing to get unfair advantages, or altogether ruin games BEFORE going gold so that you can patch up the engine BEFORE it's burned on the disc.

Make no mistake... there WILL be people who do everything they can to exploit the system for any and every advantage. It's best to know what they are doing before you go retail and it hurts your most critical moment... the first 2 weeks post launch.

Thread title says "Closed Beta" I'm sure they'll have open betas closer to release date. I was proposing a system for choosing participants for the former, not the latter. Besides, just because someone is really into the game doesn't mean they won't be looking for exploits.

while I'm sure that there are good beta testers out there who seek out exploits during closed betas to help improve the game.... they never have the drive and veracity that griefers do at tracking down and finding exploits.

and actually, as of right now, there is no plans for either closed or open beta.... only internal betas and a vague hope for a public demo

Well then both our points are merely academic. In the case that Splash Damage goes with one or the other I agree they should choose open beta. However, I was posting under the assumption that Splash Damage would do both.

I wish... we all do :P

But yah, last we heard there were no official plans for public beta's, and they had no official answer on the possibility of a demo either... though their answers are slightly more optimistic reading between the lines there.

Check the stickied FAQ at the top of the forum... has their official responses to both questions... I'm gonna go re-read them mahself right now :)

EDIT: for the lazy

Q: Will there be a beta for Brink?
A: The release of a Beta for Brink is something that is still being discussed, but no decision has been made one way or the other at this stage. http://www.co-optimus.com/article/4004/brink-developers-talk-beta-confirm-lack-of-split-screen.html

Q: What about a demo?
A: At present, there are no announced beta plans for Brink. If/when that changes, we'll let folks know on the official site for Brink: http://brinkthegame.com

I'd rather have them delay the game than released a half-assed version early.

I am assuming you referred to apb?

There are a number of games that would have benefited a great deal if they had waited a couple more months to work out the bugs, APB is in one example of this but I wasn't talking about a specific game.

Voted yes, but I doubt there will be one. Imo there should be a Beta for any game the heavily relies on online play. Gears Of War didn't have a Beta, and look, tons of glitches. Some still in the game too. But on release, you were lucky to just FIND a game, matchmaking was flawed.

a closed Beta?
Hell yeah! I'm following the Brink news 4 quite a while now and i just can't wait to play this game.
I've played a bunch of beta's till now .. open and closed ones and if the developers used it 4 balancing the games turned out great.
A few guys can only think of a limited number of combinations ... but more crazy minds can figure out more crazy things to do ingame.

Why not an open beta?
Well ... i experienced that Games with an Open Beta often got Hack in them right on release... whereas in closed Beta u could choose your testers, so the chance u got a Guy (or girl) who creates WH and AimBots is ... well lets say lower
Though i don't hope this will appear in Brink we got some Brilliant guys workin' on this game so they will figure somethin' out
