Cloth map for Skyrim

Post » Fri Oct 14, 2011 10:13 am

Like a lot of others, I was dissapointed to hear that the map included with Skyrim when pre-ordered, was only on paper. After thinking about Ideas for things to do whilst waiting for Skyrim, I got the Idea that maybe I could make one myself using the map that has recently been going around. After searching for a while with google, much to my surprise I have yet to see anyone attempt this let alone provide a tutorial so I'm a bit apprehensive about how to go about it.

My initial plan is;

  • use coffee and teabags to stain a square of material (not sure what would be best, maybe something cut from a canvas bag)
  • print the map unto iron-on transfer paper
  • apply the map to the canvas

Do you guys think this would work? Any suggestions/criticisms? I'd hate to spend the money on the materials if it didn't work (transfer paper doesn't seem cheap!). Also I'm debating whether I will be able to transfer the coloured map as is, or if I should trace the lines using image software and only print the lines unto the transfer paper.

If I do go ahead with it, I'll post some pictures of the finished outcome.

Its a cool idea, but just make sure you know how to, cause if you mess up then all that money is gone.

I had no Idea that the map was supposed to be burlap, I just saw some articles talking about the map being cloth and then later going back on what they said after they were corrected on the Beth Blog. After looking into it more, I see the Blog post says that it's a premium material that 'feels' like burlap which sounds a little ominous to me haha. Now I think about it, I believe there were people in the comments of the original article I read calling out the 'feels like burlap' sentence because the same was said about the DA:Origins map before it was realeased and it didn't turn out great (or so I heard, I never saw one myself).

If you want to make a cool custom map. Get some fake lamb skin, from a craft or fabric store. Transfer a light image, or if your good, free hand it with a very light-lead pencil. I used a projector, with the skin hanging on the wall. Either way retrace your lines with paint.

I made a local area map that way, for my cabin. It turned out nice. I get lots of comments on it.
