Cloth physics in the new trailer?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:18 pm

Regardless of your thoughts on the trailer, I found myself obsessed with seeing if they finally decided to add cloth physics into the game.

From what I could pretty much tell, especially by looking at the hooded man walking through town, is that there won't be any in the game. This means no clothes flying through the wind, or beautiful looking capes on fully armored characters.

I'm just a little disappointing in this. Even open world games like Read Dead Redemption and Mafia 2 have great physics like this, and they're console games. While I realize that the game is still a few months away from release, I would assume they have added all the base features into the game at this point if they have decided to release their first real game play trailer.

Thoughts?

Cloth physics are too CPU intensive for current gen consoles. Sorry.

Didn't see anything that would warrant cloth physics in the trailer. Most of the armor was leather or metal.

*looks at post*

*boots up Red dead and wears the duster, notices how only the lower half is physics, and even then it sometimes does the most goofy physics flailing when moving around*

*looks back at post* great physics?

Even animated cloth looks better than stiff, rigid nothingness. I even mentioned two console games off the top of my head that feature this.

Too far bit it still looks weighted to me. If it had physics it would be flowing and bouncing in different directions.

I have to agree with Lion. It looks totally weighted to her legs, and isn't flowing at all.

Yup. No cloth physics here.

But it's definitely no big deal to me. It's not even a small deal.

There are much much more important things to focus on... like waterfalls ^^

I might've noticed a little bit of movement in the Robe Character Scene.

EDIT: 1:25 into the trailer, take a close look at the bones at his waist. (slowing down the trailer helps)

I don't see any evidence of cloth physics, but at the same time, that short clip of a robe doesn't show it glued to the character's legs. So, the worst part of having no decent cloth is removed, at least.

Way to get out of your way to shoot people's hopes down Luke.

Kidding. Great job on the documentation. This link would be very handy for future cloth physics threads. Shame about it though.

Care to take a look at that? The bones there are definitely animated.

lol at mafia 2 having cloth physics, it was only on nvidia cards with physx and nvidia will do it for you for free in return of some nvidia advertising if ur going to use physx as ur physx engine.

NOTICE ME!
Seriously, I hate "begging" for attention, but this game has animated clothing. The vid Luke posted doesn't prove anything, ACs generic NPCs looked just the same and it had animated clothing.

You will find the proof at ~1:25 Look at the bones at his waist. They're moving independently from the rest of his armor.

Not the best example, but this game is RIDDLED with cloth physics on flags, curtains that flap in the wind, etc....

I did not see any clothing physic, however on a screen capture it look like the skirt had a long split up the side. http://i.imgur.com/MKm9O.jpg
and the robe http://i.imgur.com/0b6xa.jpg no visible clothing physic, but the robe almost make up for it. :whistling:

At 1:38 the main char is battling a dragon. He seems to be wearing a kilt, or at least some loose fabric of some kind behind him.

It does NOT have physics. Could be scripted though.

See: Batman arkham asylum. cloth physics were in that game and no slowdown.
i would like to see even a basic implementation of it in the game(if they don't already)

I saw your other three posts.
I just disagree. It looks to me like the bones are moving with the creature's leg.
