Clothing and fabric Physics?

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 6:37 pm

Alright, in my opinion the Assassin's Creed series was one of the first games to really pull off believable clothing physics for your character. As a gear fanatic I could play that gave for a half-hour just to watch the way the cloak and robe falls about Ezio's legs and arms.

Do you think it is possible to see something like this here? Will there finally be believable cloaks and capes in Skyrim? Your thoughts.

God, I hope. I want my ranger to have a cape flowing behind him as he tracks his prey.

I was looking at the title and Assassins Creed instantly came to mind. :P
I think if Skyrim could pull off what AC does with fabrics, this game would be amazing.

Also, I thought it was really cool when Ezio dove into the water, and for a minute or two after he got out of the water his clothes were wet and you could see that.

Yeah, this is something that I've been hoping to see since Morrowind. Even just some believable cape physics would be nice. :( (Though, if I recall, there was a pretty nice mod that did that for Oblivion--but let's see it in vanilla!)

Agreed. AC was what I was thinking about before I saw your post lol. Some swaying curtains, draqes and clothes would be an excellent addition and I don't imagine it would be all that hard to do, but I'm not a programmer so I have no idea.

But how many outfits did Ezio wear in Assassin's Creed?
While doing the same thing might not be difficult, doing it to the scale of many different outfits that offer many different results in different conditions (how loose or tight, how heavy they are, etc), while also taking into consideration that there are also a great number of different races with different physical sizes and characteristics and with male and female version and making sure the results work well without clipping and other issues... That's really a lot more work.

Exactly. I remember the developers of AC talking about the sheer amount of work that went into animating that character. I doubt we will see that level of quality in an RPG like TES that contains so many different character options. I hope I'm proven wrong.

Capes and physiqued clothing are one less mod I'd download, coupled with decent textures, plenty of weapon, armor and clothing variety, werewolves, decent spell system and good worldspace I'll have almost no reason to mod skyrim. I'd be happy to play vanilla!

Hopefully they have capes and they work well, but in Fallout : New Vegas the Centurion's Armour cape was still clipped to the legs.

Red Dead Redemption also hads some awesome clothing physics, especially with the "Mexican Poncho" outfit. To be honest I think RDR had the best all around realistic animations of any game to date.

A physics improvement is not only necessary for how cloth bends on a character, but for the entire game as a whole. I would love to see armor bend, wood crack, glass shatter, etc. Just think about how truly exciting a battle could be if a warrior were to break right through a wooden shield with a sword, or if a mage were to launch a bandit through a brick wall. The possibilities with such a physics engine are limitless.

I agree. Red Dead Redemption was also one of, if not the best looking open world game I have ever played. I hope Skyrim ends up looking as good as RDR.

Agreed. Far Cry 2 was also a looker for an open world game as well as Two Worlds 2.

RDR's cloth physics were amazing. I mean, even the fabric of his sleeves would rustle in the wind. I've never seen another game that got that detailed in its cloth physics.

As someone who tried to run a "Clotheshorse" class a few times, the point of which was to get at least one of every type of clothing in Oblivion (it was more fun in Daggerfall; clothes were much less stodgy in that game), I hope they do fun things with clothes in TESV.

Not of it's a simulation. If it's fake-physics, as in animated to look like it's dynamic, then yes.
