I play as a sneak archer and wish to maximize my sneaking.

Therefore, if I wear clothing/robes will I be able to sneak better than wearing light armor?

I think it goes after the weight of the items. So i think cloth are more sneaky then armors.

There are like 3 Types of Armor, Clothes, or no armor, Light Armor, and Heavy Armor.
Clothes are easiest to run/sneak in, Heavy is the hardest to run/sneak in.

So yes, they do.

Yes, the weight of the clothes/armor you have equipped affect your sneak skill. Weapon weight also affects it as well.

In the early levels, this will make a major difference in your game, but once the sneak skill is mastered and you have all the relevant perks, you could sneak past the entire population of Skyrim in broad daylight while wearing Deadric armor.

In early game, I take off all my clothes to sneak better sometimes.

If you can cast spells, Muffle spell makes you silent. It's better than being naked.

Taking one or two perks in Sneak is extremely helpful for sneaking. It is one of the first perks I take for my characters.

Later on you will find fortify sneak enchanted boots and necklaces, those are quite helpful too.

I'll need to remember that, and pack some robes for my Khajiit, for when he wants to be super-sneaky. Which is fairly often for him.
