ala morrowind.

I want atleast a modicum of exploration to enjoy before I know where everything is.

and dont make the world one big valley like cyrodil.

give me canyons, ravines, clifffaces, jagged and uneven landscape so I will never know what lies around the next corner.

yes, atleast for the hardcoe mode if implemented. imo you should be able to customize the gameplay as you wish it to be like Y/N buttons at the beginning to choose stuff like dehydration, sleep, remove quest arrows etc. that would be nice..

I'm actually fine with the approach they took in Oblivion - the overall provinces are all well-mapped within the game world, and if you're already in them it simply makes perfect sense that you'd be aware of what they generally look like, so making the in-game map look like an actual map and just omitting more minor details (like the locations of smaller settlements and points of interest) is a pretty sensible decision.

This would be good as part of a possible hardcoe mode.

I like this idea.

I'd like to be able to find or buy treasure maps that would uncover part of the map and show the location of some treature or something.

Just please no cliffracers (or equivalently plentiful sky beasts). :shakehead:

While I love this idea, I think a compromise can be made. Have the shroud for dungeons most definitly, you haven't been there you shouldn't know the layout. As far as the outside world, I have no problems with it, as long as you are a stranger to the area. If you the character are not a complete stranger to the land, you should know the general layout. Sure you can keep the character from fast traveling to cities he/she hasn't been, the same with other places, but if your character is someone who lived in Skyrim or has lived in Tamriel at all than a shroud over the whole land isn't needed nor would fit.

I agree. When you find something new it adds to the exhilaration of the game. You can't ever stumble upon a large town in Oblivion because they are all on the map.

Because it's not an actual map that your character is carrying, it's a representation of your character's knowledge of the region (or of the parts of the region that you, as that character, have explored).

I think it would be interesting to shroud more isolated and far-flung areas of the map- say up in the mountainous areas of Skyrim. The main routes and cities should be mapped out though, I think.

This. Big time. It's what made morrowind so fun to explore, and was completely missing from Oblivion.

Not sure about Morrowind, but Oblivion quite obviously has a real map, It's not a real item but resembles a map in every way.

No. I am sure that growing as a citizen of Tamriel I should know where the "Nirn-renowned" cities are. FT or Not FT aside, some basic landmarks should be on the map.

Oblivions was fine, but I like the idea of what happened in the Shivering Isles, you knew where New Sheoth was, but you couldn't fast travel there. I like a map where you know where all the major cities are, but you can't fast travel there until you've been there.

Because it's not an actual map that your character is carrying, it's a representation of your character's knowledge of the region (or of the parts of the region that you, as that character, have explored).

Actually, it IS a map that your character is carrying, it just doesn't appear in your inventory. Note some of the dialogue in Oblivion - like 'here, I'll mark [location] on your map'

Hell yes! I can't support this enough!

I remember in Morrowind taking a trip to Molag Mar without where it was. Boy was I surprised that I ended up in barren wasteland. However, exploring the region and getting back to Balmora with no indication of where to go was 95% of the fun. Its purely the fact you don't own the world, the world owns you!

Please Bethesda PLEASE Consider implementing this! I know you read these forums!

I don't know, I always took that sort of thing to be more of a fourth wall lapse than an indication of anything else, mainly because the map doesn't behave at all like an actual map - I can't see the main character carrying around not only an overall map of the province but also maps of every city, town, settlement, road, building, dungeon, and region of wilderness in the game).

Is there any finer feeling than the awe inspiring sight of a tower or spire or ruin or even a humble cave entrance gradually emerging from the mist?
