[RELz] CLS CraftyBits OBSE 060 Beta

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:53 pm

Great looking mod! The new in game manuals are very classy and I like them alot. Seems to make it cleaner, somehow...

Anyhow... a little request if it's at all possible.

I love the idea of playing a lute and making gold from it, and the craftybits lute part is so far the most immersive one i've come across. I love it! But for me it's slightly game breaking - i'm a lefty, and I use the keypad for moving, casting spells and all that. For me keypad 1-6 keys are all taken up on vital other bits, and i'm forever trying to cast spells and move about the room bumping into things when i'm trying to play the lute. Is there anyway any of you clever peeps can make the lute keys redefinable? I really want to use this mod but it's hindering me too much, atm.

Sorry to be requesting yet another feature for you guys to work on, but this would enhance the game for me so much!

Many thanks,

Falkon

I need help! Every singly time I try to change the cutting board into something else through the craftybits key, the game freezes. And if I try to cast the make functional spell, the game freezes.

A delightful mod, but I've run into a rather embarrassing ID10T error on my part. For the life of me, I can't make soap. I put the tallow and the ash in the cook pot like the handbook for wood crafting says, and then I try sticking it back on the fire. This does nothing beyond generate a message saying I can only cook one thing. What step am I missing?

for some reason my Blade skill rises crazily whenever skinning.

I got 10 levels with probably half the actual skinning - 10-18 in Blade or so.

Is this normal, or is this some sort of incompatibility?

LOL -Actually, We're pushing to be able to assign the music keys for the lute. I've got spell hotkeys on those and have the same problem. I think it is possible to add to the existing script for the Lute that would allow for this, But CL has the final say. Here's to hoping he gets done with real life soon and this functionality is included in version .7, eh?

Ah, I don't know if the soap making bit made it into the CB key guides.
Here's a step by step for you:
Auntie Bernice's Guide to Soapmaking. By Sickly Bernice.

While this is often seen as the topic of the wild woodsman, those of us in the city can and do benefit from well-made soap.

Soap has various benefits depending on what is added to the basic recipe.
It can be made with the use of a cook pot (I have an extra pot just for this, but many use the same pot as they cook their food in), and a stove or fire.

You will need a number of items to make soap, not the least of them being animal fat. Animal fat can be gained from aminals, deer being one of the best sources. I often buy my fat from hunters and woodsmen stopping by my tavern for ale but you can easily hunt up your own fat with a bow and arrow. It can usually be found under the skin. Search out another guide for how to do this as it is beyond the scope of what we are doing here.

Once you have animal fat you will need to render it into Tallow.
Take your Cook Pot (any covered pot can be turned into a Cook Pot with the CraftyBits key) and place it on a surface (not the stove or fire yet).
Open it up while standing.
Add your fat
Put the lid back on the pot and slide it (GRAB and tug) onto the cooking surface (Stove or Fire) and leave it until the fat has fully rendered.
Once the Pot has Tallow you will want to carefully lift it (GRAB it) from the pot and set it aside.

You will also need ash.
While the fat is rendering you can make it.
Ash can be made by burning just about anything on the stove or fire.
Just place an item by setting it down and GRABing it and drag it into the fire.
Leave it there until nothing remains but ash.
Carefully GRAB the ash from the fire and set it aside.

Basic Lye soap can be created from the Tallow and the ash.
Add equal portions back to the Cook Pot and place it back on the fire.
Soon you will have a serviceable, if harsh, soap.
While harsh I know some shadier individuals who swear by Lye soap, claiming that it improves their stealth.

A softer soap but still basic can be made with Tallow, ash, and Aloe Vera leaves.
Just add one portion of each to the pot and place it on the fire.

Truly delightful soaps can be created with the addition of scented plant matter.
All of these soaps start with the basic aloe soap above, with the addition of Lavender.
Again the basic scented soap is Tallow, Ash, Aloe Vera leaves, and Lavender. Place one of each in the pot and place on the cook surface.

To the above you can also add any one of the following: Alkanet Flower, Arrowroot, Foxglove Nectar, Peony Seeds, Primrose Leaves and Tigerlily Nectar. These are known to be restorative in one sense or another. Wonderful for company, not so great for those stealthy endeavors.

The basic recipe makes a huge block of soap. This is fine for resale, but for use I recommend cutting it into smaller portions. No merchant will buy cut soap, however so only cut what you will use.
The common and basic cooking/cutting board and a normal knife are enough to cut soap.
Place the board down on a surface.
Activate it while standing
GRAB and drag the soap block on to the Cutting Board
GRAB your (eating) knife and drag it to the soap block. Presto. Cut soap.

All I can advise you on here besides this is to make sure you use the Z key to remove all the tallow. wait a second or two, then re-add the tallow and ash on a one for one ratio. Hope that helps.

things like this is why Crafty Bits is still Beta. It may indeed be a balance issue with the mod. Or it could be a conflict. To know for sure we'd need your load order.
I have never noticed my blade skills going up fast due to skinning but - I use a 3 times slower skilling mod. This is one that CL needs to address I think. :D

for some reason my Blade skill rises crazily whenever skinning.

This came up a while ago, was fixed / balanced, got undone in a file recovery, and apparently has not been re-fixed.
It's not just you. And 'we' don't always notice glitches unless someone says something.
This is the sort of thing CLShade is likely to fix when he gets an hour or two for modding.

Yes, menu time is for letting time pass while in menu's, reading etc.
I was using OBSE 15, but just to see if it would help I reinstalled 15a. It still freezes.
But the weird thing is, once I managed to turn the cutting board into the crafting board, but after that it crashed again.
I'll try buying a new one from Jensine.

edit: nope, no change.

But the weird thing is, once I managed to turn the cutting board into the crafting board, but after that it crashed again.
I'll try buying a new one from Jensine.

CraftyBits tools (including the various boards and mixing bowl) access scripts that do the actual work.
Once they start acting funky, they are 'broken'. I think some variables do not get reset.
Buying / making a new board (etc) accesses the same scripts with messed up variables.
I would go back to a previous save and try again from there - and definitely not in the warehouse.
Make fresh saves before trying 'tricky' CraftyBits stuff.

Related "twitchy" CraftyBits activities...
The skinning script can stop working indoors (no green glow) though this seems mostly fixed.
Unlike the various boards, skinning seems to reset cleanly - save, exit at least to main menu, reload.
Chopping trees has been slightly buggy since they started identifying their type - oak, yew, etc.
If you start cutting a tree with knife or axe, finish the job without any extra strokes.
Otherwise, the script can give unexpected messages long after you've walked away from trees.
Definitely save your game before planting anything; the shovel can get 'broken', etc.

Anyway, the point is that CraftyBits while broad and interesting is not exactly robust at this point.
CLShade has been working to expand its capabilities while also making it more reliable.
Those two goals generally work against each other.
Treat this mod gently... follow recipes and process steps exactly... report glitches / bugs.

For the record, v.6 Beta seems less reliable than the previous versions.
Have fun with it, but don't expect perfection. :)

I tried to load a few earlier saves, but they all froze up as well. The I unchecked craftybits, safed, and checked again. But even now the game freezes up when I try to change the board....

LadyChoi, it sounds like you did proper mod troubleshooting and you're using OBSE 15a, so...
Something is probably wrong in the board script, or more likely the new CraftyBits Key. <_<

Besides waiting for a fix, I can only suggest:
~ Find a board already configured for crafting - if one can be found somewhere.
~ The board you get directly from a tree might start out as crafting. (been a while since I tried)
~ Mostly what I've used is the Make Functional spell, which might still work for this.
...(though the spell is not perfect either - especially not in the warehouse)
~ If Jensine sells the crafting board, then buying it will avoid the conversion crash.
...Assuming the board script is intact (still able to make stuff) you should be fine.
...And maybe that's what you meant to do in the first place.

well, used to be that you could choose which board to craft, either crafting, tailoring, or cutting. And I do think Jensine sells all three but not at the same time.

The warehouse does have the tailoring board. try taking it and carrying it outside the warehouse before using it.

As another tip go and buy some of the books on the topics. I know that I also struggled at first with doing it because my Time Scale is different then the default so it feels like it takes forever to sometimes cook items.

my Time Scale is different then the default so it feels like it takes forever to sometimes cook items.
You see, different strokes for different folks-- I put one of Xiamara's nice comfy chairs in the kitchen (replacing the ugly hard chair that was there before) of the house mod I was using at the time, and enjoyed "sitting a spell" while my food cooked (especially after my struggle with the grab key to get the couple of ears of corn and a potato or two into the fire in the first place).

It was nice; I had enough sit time to know I had sat down (just a RT minute, maybe, but at least it wasn't like I had just sat down and had to jump up again to get the food out) and pretend I had read the paper or something (since I didn't want to leave the play screen to really read the BHC, since I might miss the message that my food was done and burn it to ash :) ); I can't imagine how fast the whole process would go at the default timescale (and I don't want to... calm and peaceful in the kitchen, that's my motto :) ).

I know what you mean. I am learning the Construction Set and because of this I have modified the house I live in to add a CraftyBits area as well as a neat Magic forest inside and a planting area. Of course the planting area is considered inside so I can not use this mod to plant. :-( I created separate areas for the different things that can be done. It also includes a nice desk so that I can scribe whatever I like and the desk is perfect storage. I also felt odd being in my Alyeid house and there were no fires anywhere to help keep the place heated so I have added nice fires all over the place too. I might have to add a nice chair or two for cooking though so my character can just sit. I typically just wander around doing others things while the stuff cooks. The funny part is that I can use the cooking plate and cook like magic on it with no fire. I would love that kind of technology right now in the real world. Just carry that magic plate with you and you are good. hehehe

I have also noticed not crashes but the scripts will stop working for me as well but it is typically if I take something from the Mixing Bowl and/or Cutting Board directly without first grabbing and letting it acknowledge the fact that I removed it first and then place it into my inventory.
Keep up the great work because I love this mod. It is one of my favorites even if sometimes it also frustrates me the most.

Also if anybody is interested from the CraftyBits team I had some extra time and I started working on food recipes. I can post them if you guys like. Unfortunately I am not somebody that can do messes or else I would get started. I also might be able to do even more over the next few days. I have about 10-15 more things at the moment.

Any Ideas you have are fine. Please post.
I've located some new food resources by David Whitefang that might work with your ideas.

Hi, I have to say that I really love your mod. :)

But my game freezes up every time I try to cut a tree. It worked the first time with a pine, but now, when I face any tree and try to cut it up with an axe, it freezes and I must kill the process to terminate the game. I have used a made functional axe and a normal one, and it also freezes when I try to hit the trees with a knife. I need wood to cook!

Let me know any other ways I have to test this issue. =(

If you want to let me know the food resources that would be great. I might be able to come up with a lot more things. I also have yet to try the spear for fishing so if that catches fish then there is the posibility of some nice fish meals as well as I just though that if we could add chickens and turkeys to the game for food then I can expand even more. Thanksgiving dinner anybody? hehehe

First I was thinking of a new item/tool for cooking. A roll pin but I started to think more about it and if you just have no weapon and maybe just hit the item with your bare hands it could work the same. Plus then it could also help to improve Hand to Hand so let me know what you think. For all of these recipes I am going to assume the rolling pin though would be used but that can be changed of course. Please feel free to let me know what anybody thinks about these things. Also to preface this all of the items mentioned here are ingredients that are in my game so I am going on that assumption for everybody else. Also I am trying to use only items that work with the COBL Hunger mod too. If the More Vegetables mod worked with the hunger mod this list would be huge. If people like these I might be able to come up with more of them since I am not using all that many of the ingredients that are in the game. I was thinking that there must be a way to make something that is consider tea that would work for a Thirst mod as well.

milk, mushroom (mixing bowl, cutting board, cooking pot) - cream of mushroom soup
graqes (cutting board) - graqe seeds
graqe seeds (cooking pot) - graqe seed oil - this would sort of allow frying loosely
rice (cooking pot) - steamed rice
rice (steamed), onion, carrot, graqe seed oil (cooking pot) - fried rice - the veggies I was thinking could be placed on the cutting board to chop and then mixed in the bowl and then finally into the cooking pot to cook it.
graqe seed oil, flour dough - fried dough - I figured since you had the oil why the heck not.
aloe, water or ale (mixing bowl) - weak heal potion
flour dough, strawberries - strawberry pie
tomato, carrot, potato, onion (cooking pot) - vegetable soup - this could also require the cutting board and mixing bowl to chop the items and mix it together before placing in the cooking pot.
flour dough, butter, brown sugar (rolling pin) - sugar cookies - figure it would be a nice treat.
flour dough, butter (rolling pin) - croissants - who says that you can be a killing machine and a great cook?
tomato (mixing bowl) - sauce
flour dough, sauce, veggies, cheese wedge (rolling pin) - pizza
watermelon (cutting board) - just create smaller slices to carry with you instead of the entire thing. Similar to what can be done with a cheese wheel
flour dough, pumpkin (cutting board, cooking plate or fire) - pumpkin pie
egg, flour, milk, butter (mixing bowl, cooking plate or fire) - biscuits

As always keep up the great work with the mod.

Flakinator, you know that some of these final foods already have items (like, I think Strawberry Pie and Sugar Cookies, and possibly Pumpkin Pie, as final products are available as part of Salmo th4e Baker, as is a rolling pin most likely-- and Salmo the Baker's resources are available via COBL). Just saying that for some items, you might only need a recipie, not meshes and textures to make a new item.

On that note, you've given me an idea or two

onions, dough, graqeseed oil (cooking pot-- though if we had a deep fry pan, that would be nice) -- fried onion rings (and of course, with a change in the recipe to other vegetables, like eggplant, carrots, courgettes (from More Vegetables, also part of COBL, iIrc), you can have different sorts of vegetable tempura.

Oh, rats, nobody has spinach, so can't suggest spinach salad :( But I can suggest

Lettuce, spiddal stick (to replace celery, which we don't have, or maybe Marshmerrow from Tamrielic Ingredients/COBL would be better), Ironwood nut (which is rare, making the result as high-end as the original), apples, raisins (can I make raisins in the smoke shed? or could we have a min-version of the drying shed, so I could make raisins, and perhaps sun-dried tomatoes?) (mixing bowl) -- (a really bad, since it has no dressing) Waldorf salad :)

dough, onions, cheese, garlic (how could I have forgotten garlic??!), ham/or other meat of choice (cutting board, oven) -- pizza (there is a modder's resource for a pizza http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15557

fish meat (I know NWJ has this, and I think that one of the fishing mods does as well), steamed rice, seaweed if we could get it as a pickable object from OOO or Alive Waters, or NWJ if they have it -- sushi (! :) )

Dough, milk (I think), ash yam (from Tamrielic Ingredients) -- sweet potato pie ( :) )

Is there a still (I've forgotten)? If so, then we can also have (aside from the ordinary wine and beer), vodka (from potatoes) and rice wine (from rice, naturally), which would go nice with the sushi :) .

In my game, I also have coffee and tea available (not sure where the tea comes from, though I've seen it available for sale in the IC Waterfront Tunne, the coffee is of course from Azura's Coffee shop. However, that's no longer available, so if you wanted to allow coffee and tea, you'd probably be better off with http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15277, which adds coffee beans, teal leaves and cocoa beans (! hot chocolate ! )), and it would be nice if I could drink a cup of either in place of water when I eat a meal...or maybe they could have food value so I could "pack a thermos" next to my water flask....

Anyway, just goofing around thinking about cooking, since that is far and away the section of this mod I use most (don't craft weapons or armor, since my character has personal weapons that I won't replace, given that Xena Warrior Princess is just not Xena Warrior Princess without her leathers, sword and chakram, and theoutcrowd did such a wonderful job recreating them for the mod), I don't bard (since it's my companion, who is also included in theoutcrowd's mod, who's the bard, and I can't make her do it with CB, as far as I can tell), and although Xena is known to have many skills, tailoring her own street clothes is not really among them :) . I would dry some meat, of course (but that's halfway to cooking again), and do maybe a bit of lapidary, but cooking I do almost every day.

So it would be nice to have more stuff to cook, even though I'll just pack it in a VVA ration pack where I can't see it :) -- I'll know what the rations are, and how delicious they will be :) .

Ironwood Nuts may be rare, but Tree Seeds are pretty much a byproduct of chopping trees.
You get only one type, but they could represent acorns, walnuts, almonds - whatever. Nuts.

Graqe Seed Oil sounds interesting.
Another cooking oil might be Flax Oil - which has been used to repair wood bows.
As a bonus, flax plants are very common in several places.
10 Flax Seeds (cooking pot) = 1 Flax Oil ... or at least it used to work that way.

Cool cooking ideas, folks. :)

The food resource is here: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20357
David Whitefang has made a feast. there's bread slices, orange slices (and a mesh that could be retexted for sliced fruit), alternate cooked meats, And other things. There's also condiments made (Butter and other items).

On an aside: some one made Passionfruit! http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14620

Good gravy, dewshine! This is a treasure!

... couldn't this be adapted (much easier than doing it oneself) to create externalized eating plates for VVA? Good.... gracious! This is ncredible... salt and sugar and butter and shrimps that look like shrimps, and sliced bread... I'm swooning.

These resources are excellent. With some of those items it does open up even more things for cooking. I am glad to know that many some of the resources/meshes might already include the items that I have suggested.

Now if I can just figure out why when I sometimes open up a container the game will stop processing after the opening animation I would be happy. Just started today. I am thinking a possible load order issue.
