Codec Investigation Project

So, I finally had the game crash on my old rig. I had noticed it was starting to load really slow the last couple days, almost acting like it was frozen, but would eventually load. (Older rig, to be expected.)

So I stared playing around with K-Lites tools. I used the 'fixed broken codecs' section in the Codec Tweak tool, and included the last option, (Midi sounds not ticked by default.) just for the hell of it. (Doubt it was the cause specifically, but hey, ya never know.)

I loaded up the game, and to my surprise, it loaded as fast as it does on this rig. So I exited the game, and restarted it. Yet again it loaded up very quickly in comparison. [P.S. I did a 3rd after a reboot and it still loaded quickly.) I noticed the little load "wheel" doesn't pause anymore, it continues to spin right up til the save loads.

P.S.

A64 3500
6800 Ultra
2GB

If your curious.

In addition, I was able to restore my Audgy 2 to full hardware acceleration again. :) (Mentioned scaling it back elsewhere, but now I do not have to.)

P.S.

I also notice I suddenly had the radio warble on my new rig. (Though nothing has changed.) So I once again opened up the codec tweak too, navigated to Directshow Filter Manager [K-Lite Codec pack] DISABLE the following filters. (The first one is enable.) I selected all, yup ALL. Warble is now gone. Game works, WMP works, but I'll keep an out for issues later.

Make sure you create a system restore point first though. (And/Or use the back up in the Tweak Tool. Import/Export option 2nd option after the speaker settings.)

Have you read my post about GStaff? He is totsally clueless. And yes, it is great to help fellow gamers, but I still believe that Beth will use it as something they won't need to fix.

Some instances may be fixed by uninstalling 3rd Party codec packs such as K-Lite or CCCP

Let me rub it in once more. See what he actually writes. I have made it bold. Uninstalling K-Lite? Installing that codec pack is something that actually helps people! Wow. I still can't believe that post. This means he doesn't know what he is talking about at all.

I also want too add in I uninstalled winamp and Divx and the game then ran perfectly for me. No crashes or anything (for now)

You've made your point, the fact is, removing it has worked/s for some. ;)

Should there be an addition saying "try uninstalling/installing depending whether you have/don't have it and see if it helps."? Sure, but his statement is not clueless, just lacking 'completeness'.

all I've got is k-lite codec pack and fallout 3 still crashes at "new game" after a short load every single time.

Whatever... I just hope that GStaff is not advicing anyone.

The major problem in Beth's engine is bad and buggy exception and error handling. No codec or DirectShow filter can fix that.

If Fallout 3 needs a codec, then it either installs it or it assumes the codec is there.

If the game is assuming the codec is there, it must be a codec that comes with Windows, or the latest Windows Media Player, or Internet Explorer. I recommend installing them even if you aren't going to use them as they might pull other fixes and config into the system. A codec pack from Microsoft might be another option. After installing Microsoft software, check for updates using Microsoft update.

Hi CCNA,

To shed some light on possible setups:

I use VLC player with builtin codecs, and have winamp. It was set to default play OGG files. My WMP cannot play OGG files by default, I assume installing K-Lite would solve that issue.
Are you sure that Fallout3 uses the WMP, and not MPlayer2 (default builtin win media player)?

My home policy is never to install codecs, and let one program handle it. Well, have to change that on this gaming box then. Will report if this works (could take a while, applying "audio fix" now). That audio fix could very well be obsolete, wish I'd read this post first :s

We have not tested, the community that is, the need for WMP to be associated with Windows Media Player, it is just a common fix for Oblivion when folks had issues and this game uses the same engine. So, it should always be tried for a troubleshooting step.

As to the codecs, I do agree that installing a bunch of codecs is not needed per say for this game. It will work on a clean stock XP install. The problem is, every media player out there isntalls it's own codecs. Some media forces or requires downloads of certain codecs. It is those non stock codecs that can cause issues as they tend to make themselves the prefered codec to process a media file. Which is why WMP may be needed to be the associated program with MP3's. Not sure about ogg files, just that some reported issues with them being associated to WinAmp, a popular media player.

The other issue is, Windows Media Player won't play things like DVD's and other common media files without codecs. So, folks install codec packs. It is all these codec combo's and some rogue codecs that can cause issues in these games. It was a common issue for folks who ran Oblivion.

We reccomend the K-Lite pack as it has all the codecs that one should need, and it is a stable package. Some here report success with CCP, some don't. However, I would venture to guess that those who use K-Lite or CCP and have problems did not reset or remove the other codecs first. And, those who run CCP without issues that may be the only codec pack they have other than stock.

Sounds about right to me.

For what it's worth, I have a brand new install of Vista Ultimate x64 and get crashes every... 40 minutes to 2 hours or so. The screen will freeze up, and then a few seconds later, I'll get an error message saying that my video drivers have stopped responding. Video card has the latest drivers, it's a rock solid high end ATI (so no defective Nvidia GPU problem), and of course, FO3 is the only game I've had this problem on. I even dropped it on a couple of older dual core machines, and they both had lots of video-related crashes, maybe every 15 minutes or so, but with the old video cards in those things, I guess that's not entirely unexpected.

I've also tried (unsuccessfully) to emulate the game on a VMWare Workstation 6 environment, which crashes as soon as I hit "new game" (SecuROM not liking all the virtualization, I figure) and to run the game natively in Gentoo with both Wine DX9 plugins and transgaming's Cedega. I've managed to make all these solutions work for other games - NWN2, CoD4, etc, but no luck with FO3, which, incidentally, is my first Bethseda game. (To be fair, I can't tell if it's crashing as soon as it tries to initialize the game's main graphics engine, or if it's just SecuROM being the useless piece of garbage it is. Of course, in my opinion, either way, it's Bethseda's fault, and their responsibility to fix it.)

The only conclusion I can come up with is that Bethseda's graphics coding and/or APIs need some serious work and/or a patch or 6. (Also, SecuROM is hellspawn, but that's nothing new.) Incidentally, when can we expect that first patch?

One guy at my other codec/audio related thread ( http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=900436&st=20&start=20 ) installed the audio fix, and it worked for him right away.
He has Winamp and a codec pack installed, and gameplay used to be choppy.

I'm still waiting for that patch to complete, will update my findings when it does.

*bump*

The symptoms: frequent random lock-ups (no error message, no BSOD) that forced me to kill the application through the Task Manager. Loading a saved game would lock the computer up as well.

The solution: I installed the latest K-Lite codec pack (the full version but with no players). K-lite installer asks you whether you want to substitute the codecs you already have on the system and so I did (particularly for the Ogg Vorbis codec). Since then I managed to leave the Vault and played the game without a single crash.

After installing K-Lite codecs and starting the game ffdshow turned up with a dialog asking whether I want ffdshow to run with F3 (I disabled it of course). Even at this instance there was no lock-up, the game handled the situation gracefully.

My setup:
Intel Core2Duo 6600 (2.4 GHz)
Gigabyte GA-P965-DQ6 rev. 1.0 (with latest driver)
Asus EN 8800 GTS (running nVidia 178.24 drivers as Asus' are a few steps behind)
Realtek HD Audio (on-board sound)
Windows XP 32 SP3
DirectX 9.0c with latest update
Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.1.325
Fallout 3 (Polish edition)

Some more codec intel for you guys!

is it easy to get rid of these codecs should they do more harm than good on my, perfectly running apart from warbling radio music, game?

i had a look at what codecs i have installed using one of CCNA's tools.

i dont have anything that is not by either Microsoft or ATI... oh and xfire and fraps have something listed aswell.
(i dont have divx, i dont have winamp, i dont have any ogg vorbis files, ffdshow etc. etc.)

I dont have the problems mentioned. I looked at the dlls that are loaded in Megaton via process explorer (and this causes fallout to enter a crash dialog probably via securom panic).

I see the bink and vorbis dlls that are loaded from the Fallout 3 install directory and

The MP3 codec from the system32 directory. I dont see anything else but maybe I am missing something.

[edit]

The file in the process explorer indicates

l3codecx.ax MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS 1.05.0000.0050 C:\WINDOWS\system32\l3codecx.ax 2/28/2006 4:00 AM

The Windows System Information Tools shows the following Audio Codec

c:\windows\system32\l3codeca.acm Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec OK C:\WINDOWS\system32\L3CODECA.ACM 1, 9, 0, 0305 284.00 KB (290,816 bytes) 2/28/2006 4:00 AM

It looks like it was installed with windows. It is unlikely but possible that the sound card install had an update.

The old winamp I remember didnt install codecs, it had its own collection of decoder plugins and maybe could use some codecs.

If you set a system restore point, you can easilly go back, if you are considering using K-Lite. Also, K-lite has an uninstaller that works well at cleaning out what it installs.

It may not be Windows Media Player doing the processing, but there is some mechanism where WMP has to be the associated program for this game to work. It has been this way since Morrowind and Oblivion. Whether is sounds right or not, it is the way it is. :)

Just as a testimonial, I never had audio issues with either Morrowind nor Oblivion, and I haven't had .MP3 associated with WMP for a decade.. It also may not have been a problem with Fallout3, but I had changed that association at the same time as changing the .OGG extensions, so it's moot. And I'm talking about a couple of different hardware configs, one of which employed 2 different soundcards and the newest of which features RealTek97 onboard audio.. Not sure where the ties lie, but I'm fairly certain the MP3 association to Windows Media Player hasn't been mandatory.

Im glad there are still people posting fixes here. Im sorry to say it but i have spent a week now searching these forums endlessly and tried every fix i have seen with absolutely no change in game, and this is just another fix that changes nothing. Half the people posting here cant even get past the intro video and the other half cant play due to ctd's every 5-10 minutes. Im done looking for fixes, they need to fix their game not me. Im not saying the game svcks, its actually a great game 5-10 minutes at a time before it crashes every time you zone or every time i use VATS(something that is advertised in every video and even printed on the back of the box) and if its not that there are the completely random world crashes and insane slowdowns. Im glad some people are having success with some of the fixes here but for me nothing here is working.

and before you say anything i am far far above the system requirements

I don?t think a game can ever crash a driver with any kind of coding - unless there is a flaw in the driver itself that makes it possible. It offers an interface for the game/system, it?s not like the game IS the driver. That message is telling that your GPU crashed and the VPU recover rebooted it.

I wouldn?t sit back and wait for a patch to a game to fix that kinda problem, rather lower your OC or even downclock the card, this game generates more heat than other games I have played.

I had this same issue, I?m not just talking. On two different drivers. I took out all OC (which worked fine with other games!) on my GPU and it went away. :)

So it may well be that while you might not even HAVE overclock on your GPU, the interior of your computer case heats up more than usual, and your GPU can?t handle the added temperature even on stock clocks.

EDIT: It?s ironic actually - sounds like you have a crash free GAME, you should be happy! :)

It's more of an issue with 3rd party codecs "high jacking" what Fallout is trying to do by default. And/Or broken codecs. As I understand it. (I am by no means a programmer/IT guy or any such thing, just a guy who believes he has a basic understand of what is going on in the background.)

It's as simple as installing say, Creative Media Source 5, like I did. Had no issue before, but I did after that. Uninstalled it right away as it was accidental to begin with during a driver update, and the issue went away.

The game will have everything it needs on the disk when installed.

Hi,

Just saying that the things posted here (installing k-lite, setting WMP to default app, disabling ffdshow) combined with the fanmade fix from my topic ( http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=900436 ) seems to have improved some things for me.

Now I have a nv4_disp problem, but that seems unrelated to audio drivers, so I'll keep that out of here for now.

I seem to have fixed my crashing issues (knock on wood)

I Un-associated file types from WMP first. Then I ran VLC media player, settings, preferences, open the Imput/codecs tree, where ever codecs appeared in the list I unchecked all the boxes and set values to zero(0)
I really have no clue about these things, it was one of those screw around with stuff and see what happens scenarios. Seems to have worked, I've gone from random crashes every five minutes to zero crashes over the last two hours.

Would there by any value to people posting their list of installed codecs if their game does run? Maybe that way, by process of elimination, you can see what codecs are not causing the problem.

It seems that with k-lite installed, the radio crackling goes away; but after it goes through a DJ transition and back to music... the popping comes back. Going to the menu or alt tabbing fixes this, but it always seemed to come back after a transition.

After following a tip about merits and moving the directshow control slider to the left; I gave it a try. Low and behold, the crackling no longer comes back after the DJ to music transition.

I'll have to test it more, but it's working for now.

If anyone else is having the same problem with the crackling coming back, try tabbing out, opening ffdshow (icon should be in your tray), and move the slider all the way to the left and hit apply.

I took this copy from InstalledCodec.
Before, I had no codecs (I use VLC player, has all codecs embedded, can really adivise it). Installed K-Lite and the fan-made fix ( http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=900436&st=60&gopid=13130158&#entry13130158 ). Now no more audio stuttering or choppy gameplay, sometimes a quit to desktop (once every 20 - 70 min).
