Coins

Post » Wed Nov 24, 2010 10:05 am

I would like to see different coins used for currency. Copper, silver, Gold, Platinum or whatever. I don't know why but in other games where the money is handled that way I liked seeing that I had made enough gold to equal 1 plat or more, was a small feeling of accomplishment but when theres just gold it doesnt matter what I get up to I just never feel that its a whole lot.

Also would like them to be droppable. I liked that in morrowind. I could lay out piles out on my home tables and feel rich.

Lat thing I would like is if you could melt down your coins to use for crafting.

Sorry if this has been said before.

I wouldn't mind that.

Also, Fallout had droppable money, a feature I'm hoping will return.

I don't think that is going to happen.

Though I wonder if they'll call it something instead of "Septims" now that the Septim Dynasty is over.

Or maybe they will have a new currency. We'll see.

It probably won't be a different system, though.

I hope it's still going to be called Septims. I liked Septims. I just hope they're droppable now.

Think DA:O got it about right, basically pennies, shillings and sovereigns, just gold doesn't seem enough, and something like Rolemaster is a bit overcomplicated, what with tin pieces and all that. But just the one denomination is pretty much entrenched in TES lore.

I'd rather they just stick to gold coins only. I don't really see a need to go beyond that.

I wouldn't mind different looking currency, but they should just be one common denominator. So a coin is a coin is a coin. Or Gold is worth 5, Silver 3, and Copper 1 for example. no convertions. Would be a great idea if money had weight, so Gold would be harder to find and Copper would be alot to find.

Yeah, I agree. Money felt more tangible in Morrowind because it was an actual item in your inventory, not just a kind of statistic.

play NV, different money is just a bad idea, it was never any use, it was just another item that you could sell

Well whats is gold are?
In Daggerfall there was gold as ingredient and it has weight 400 gold pieces have a weight of 1kg and can found in form of Nugget and bullions
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Ingredients
As well there is was Banks thats can provide Letter of Credit although not all will accepts checks just like in IRL

In Morrowind there was coins stack of different amount and ability to drop your gold to the ground, as well there was misc items thats can work as money like gems and Dwemer coins since Morrowind have barter but dont have banks because banks are not peculiar to Morrowind historically

In Oblivion we have large simplification of currency system we are not able drop gold to the ground but can take by one coin from ground, despite the fact that Cyrodiil is the center of the empire, there is no banking system at all, but you can invest your gold into shops at last, I accept Cyrodiil is not "barbaric" Morrowind and shop owners will not barter with you and prefer golds instead of gems, but why precious items have so low cost, some items have not cost at all.
Thats great there is mods what fix such flaws.

I'd like to see both banks and barter in Skyrim not all regions of Skyrim are economically rich in such regions subsistence economy and barter will work well but also there is big cities many of them are cross trade routes In such places golds are prefer then barter and banks are must be done at last as part of Merchant expeditions and caravan guilds, as well there is dwemer ruins also so expects return of cluttered ruins not empty dungeons with few stones and no of any misc items like Ayleid ruins was, how a hell they can be ruins of cities if they doesn't have of any traces of the existence of the inhabitants and full of traps, they are more like ancestors tombs then actual ruins of cities, my inner archaeologist is disappoint with this.
So rare misc items will have cost as well valueble items will really valuable, if need make certain item costless better to make merchants interested in buy certain items types similar to Daggerfall so Armorer will not buy or give small price for scribe supplies and books but will give more money for ingredients and armor and weapons, while Bookstores will buy scribe supplies and books but not buy weapons and armor, its logical does not?

The names Septim and Drake are based off the coin itself. Tiber Septim's head is on the face of the coin, and on the tail side is a dragon.

I don't know. What is gold are?

I agree with both ideas of the OP. Coins should be converted into different types at certain amounts. They should also be smelt-able.

From Morrowind,

I liked the bartering. It felt SO awesome when you traded away your entire inventory so that a bow was within your price range, and then it turned out it wasn't worth the trade.

I liked the droppable money - felt more real.

I liked the fact that useless clutter was worth something. (But I imagine that that scaled up the rest of the economy, so maybe not something I'd like to see come back)

From Oblivion,

I liked the % haggle.

At first, I liked the multiple coins idea, but now it would just seem a little cluttered and annoying. Septims are fine.

Although, I do hope that you can drop coins. Slightly off-topic, but it would also be neat if we could trade with Gems and rings and stuff. Say you didn't have enough money for the sword, but you had a diamond, you could give the money and diamond.

EDIT: Just realised you already can do that  Sell the Diamond first.

It would make sense for the currency to be called something different now, it has been two centuries since the Septim dynasty. In history one of the first things new rulers would do is have coins with their faces minted. I remember watching this one show and a guy who was emperor of Rome for like half a year had a ton of coins with his face minted and then he got sick and died or was killed.Their other name Drakes might still be the same since Akatosh would probably be even more important to the empire since the oblivion incident.

I agree, it DOES give you a feeling of accomplishment and it does indeed feel satisfying when 100 silver turn into 1 gold coin (Sovereign) as in DA:O. And it would make sense with a new currency all these years after the Oblivion crisis. We don't even know what has happened to the empire, do we?
