Cold Steel: Fighting The Future

Post » Sat Dec 19, 2009 3:02 am

[[Disclaimer: This is not a RP. It is sort of a miniature RP combined with a co-authored story. Only Francois Lachon, Aussie Made and I are participating in this. It is in RP form, but more detailed, and story like. It isn't a BoS vs. Enclave RP/Story either, Edward, Patrick and Pete are no longer with the Brotherhood, and the Enclave will have only a small part in this. It is just the same universe, and kind of a sequel. Cold Steel 3 never happened, because that fell through anyway. I, and others, really enjoyed CS, so I've decided to start it up again, though in a different form.]]

Brief:

5th of July, 2279

The Enclave has been obliterated, defeat after defeat at the hands of the Brotherhood have taken its toll. The remainders have one plan.

Take down as many Brotherhood soldiers as they can.

After the beating they received from the elite Brotherhood squad, Cold Steel, led by one Sentinel Edward Shield, they decide that there is no one better to lead it than him. His body is taken from the Crawler by an Enclave Stealth Unit, and air lifted to a Lab. Then the treatment starts.

After the battle, Sentinel Peter Harrow, the Second-In-Command is taken up to collect Edwards body, after he refused to let anyone else do it. They arrive to find the body missing, and Peter sinks to the ground, moaning.

"It's just a corpse anyway." says an Initiate, as he watched the Sentinel. Worst mistake of the boys life. Peter, in his emotional state, punches the kid in the face, nearly breaking his neck. The Sentinel is restrained, and forced onto a Vertibird back to the Citadel. When he arrives, he kicks open the Vertibird door, walks to his quarters, retrieves his possessions and leaves the Citadel as a legend. His final words as a Sentinel?

"I was too old for this crap anyway..."

He begins his journey to Rivet City, when he meets an interesting man. They begin to discuss the latest events in the Enclave-Brotherhood War.

6th of July, 2279

In a dark laboratory, somewhere far away from the Capital Wastelands, a beady set of eyes watches a show of lights never before seen by humans.

"Sir," calls out an intercom, "The test was a success. The Cold Fission process worked. Project is a go."

"Good. Load them onto the planes. Tell the soldiers to board the planes too. Destination: Washington D.C."

"Will do, sir. Planes fueling is beginning, they should be touching down in the next few days. Should I prepare the cameras so you can watch?"

"No. Fuel my Jet, too. I'm going."

"... Uh, yes sir. I'll, um, get on that right away Mr. Zi-"

The man with the beady eyes cut off the radio before his assistant could finish.

Soon...

Note to everyone who reads this: I'll be writing in First Person from Peter's point of view, hope you enjoy the read.

I looked at the man, who sat in front of me, this man that assumed, that Ed could still be alive. I opened my mouth, but no words came out, all I could managed after 2 minutes was, "How?".
The man chuckled and he spoke again, "The Enclave has created such technology, that they can bring back anyone to life. The only thing they need, is a pulse and a working heart and lungs. They can replace anything else," he muttered out. I looked at this man with a grudging respect, the one you give to an enemy that you wish you didnt' have to kill.

I opened my mouth again, "Tell me, again, how do you know all this?"
He chuckled, "I told you once, ex-Sentinel Peter Harrows, I was in the Enclave for years. Tried to take down the Lyon's Pride, we failed miserably, it doesn't matter about my past, just your future Pete. You go out, you find your mate, his name was Ed right? Find him kid, cause from what I heard... The Enclave always needed someone like your Ed, someone with the spirit to lead."

I stood up and I sat back down again instantly, I looked at the man and I smiled, "Helped by the enemy? What can I give you in return for this information?" I only heard him say a couple of words.
"Kill whatever bastard gets in your way."
I nodded at him and I got up, I looked at my armor, I looked at the pistol in my hands, somehow, I'd managed to find the pistol that had "Ed", inscribed onto the side of it.

I felt a single tear fall down my face and I looked at the man once more, "Thank you, for a former Enclave Captain, your alright." I picked myself up and I steeled myself, I chuckled at that thought and I left the Carrier. I nodded at Harkness and I continued moving, I walked down the river and I made it to Project Purity, I didn't even look at the other soldiers, I just kept moving. I didn't know where to go, to find Ed, so I tried something different...

I moved North-West, to the former Enclave base, to see if there was any hope, of finding Ed, alive.

Edward

Beep... Beep... Beep...

Edward could hear the beeping noise, it was calming him. His eyes were too heavy to open, his body numb, but he could still feel something all around. Like liquid.

Flash

A big Robot. A large, moving machine, with Vertibirds flying all around it. A pistol, with writing on it that he couldn't read, then, his own voice rung out and he listened. "May the steel you were born from never grow cold like this gun, for one cannot live without the other." A Vertibird with 'Big Bird' painted on it, being hit and tumbling out of the sky.

Beep.. Beep.. Beep.. Beep.. Beep..

The beeping was getting faster, and more frantic. It was losing it's calming effect, and Edward was beginning to feel uncomfortable.

Flash

A radio started squawking from somewhere. "Sentinel Shield and Harrows, we are alive but in a bad way me and Aegus are the only ones conscious. I've been wounded and it's not looking to good, but it's only in the arm. Knight Aegus is helping the rest of our men. What is our next move?". Now he was in a control center, or a cockpit of some kind. A speaker started speaking to him in a monotone voice. "WARNING:" started the computer, "SLOW MOVING PROJECTILE INCOMING TO COCKPIT CONTAINING HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE MATERIAL. SUGGESTED EVACUATION."

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

The Beeping was getting faster with every flash. Edward had no idea what was happening. What was he seeing? What was that noise?

Flash

This time he recognized who he was seeing. Sentinel Peter Harrows, his best friend. He was leaned over him, sobbing. "C'mon Pete" he sobbed, "you gotta wake up. Our boys aren't going to survive up their without our help. I'm not going to be able to survive without your help." He didn't know what was happening, but he started getting upset. What was happening to Pete?

BeepBeepBeepBeepBeepBeepBeep

He opened his eyes and lurched forward, instantly regaining control of his body. Two men. Two, confused, scared, lab coat wearing men.

Enraged at the sight of Pete, and scared at what was happening, he leapt out of the pod he was in, splashing a green liquid everywhere doing so.

"How is he awake?!" yelled one of them, desperately reaching for something in his coat.

"I have no idea!" yelled the other, who was frozen in place. Edward lurched forward, grabbing the man with his hand in his coat's head and twisting it suddenly, snapping it. The man fell to the ground, and he grabbed the other man who was standing still. He brought his head down onto a desk, and held it there.

"Where is he?!" he yelled.

"Who?" sobbed the man.

"Pete! Where is Pete?"

"I.. I don't know what you are talking about! I swear!"

"What is this place?!" Edward yelled into the mans ear.

"Its a lab! An Enclave Lab! I'm a Scientist, we brought you back to life!"

"How?" asked Edward, confused.

"Life support, Resuscitation devices and Stimout. Which is a combination of a enhanced Stimpacks, Buffout, and several genetic-"

Edward cut him off, throwing him onto the ground. "Give me them."

"There is a pack of them on the desk!"

"Good boy. How do I get out?"

The scientist didn't reply, so Edward kicked him in the stomach.

"You saved my life, I'll let you keep yours." Edward whispered. "Though, I'm not sure what these Enclave people will do to you."

Edward stood up, taking the lab coat from the man he had killed. Inside, he realized the man had been reaching for what he remembered to be a 10mm Pistol. He cursed his stupidity, that he had just jumped at them like that, before taking the pistol and walking towards the door.

I looked down at myself and I broke down, I fell, right in the middle of the Wastes, I couldn't keep moving...

Why am I even trying? I deserted the Brotherhood... Because of Ed... God, Ed, why did you have to go and do what you did... Ed, why did I leave you alone? Why am I such an idiot!!!

I looked at myself again and I calmed down, I pulled out the pistol that I'd been carrying at my side ever since I found it, I looked at the name inscribed on the side, "Ed," I flipped it over and read the words, "May the steel you were born from never grow cold like this gun, for one cannot live without the other,". I stopped and I stood up, I looked across the Wastes, towards the only place that might be left to lead me towards Ed... I thought of the writing on the gun.

I shook my head, it was right, one cannot live without the other. Ed was the closest thing I had to a friend, no one else had left a mark on me like he had, I started moving quickly towards the last known location of the Enclave. We'd never fully checked out Raven Rock's remains... Now was the time to check it out myself. I didn't tire, I just kept moving further and further away from safety.

I saw multiple groups of Enclave outposts as soon as I'd made it past a bridge, I cursed and I looked to my left, about 20 feet away was a little patrol moving towards me. Very bloody quickly. I stood my ground and I watched as they came towards me, they soon made it to me and looked me up and down. An officer opened his mouth and I growled, he closed it quickly, I spoke up, "I'm not a part of the Brotherhood, although I'm guessing you already knew that I probably was. Let me past, or you'll die."

They laughed and I sighed, I brang up the pistol and I shot the officer in the head, his body slumped in front of the soldiers. They tried to pull out their weapons frantically. I laughed, "So unwise." I brang up the pistol again and I shot both of the soldiers, they to slumped to the ground, dead. I moved towards the North-West once again, moving away from the other Outposts. I wasn't in the mood to waste ammo.

All I knew, was that Ed could be alive and because of that, I knew I could not rest.

Edward

Edward grabbed the pack of meds and slung it over his shoulder. He pulled the pistol up and checked the bullets. 5 shots. Hopefully these Enclave guys didn't have any armor, or good weapons. Maybe they were a group of Scientists?

He put the pistols up and walked through a door way, right into something big and black. He looked up, and saw some sort of statue.

And then the statue started moving.

And then the statue started shooting.

He jumped back through the doorway, taking cover behind the wall. A memory came back to him, just in time.

He was young, around 12, and a man was helping him aim a pistol.

"C'mom Eddie! I know you can do it! If you hit the eye, the glass will break on their Power Armor, and you have the best chance of killing an Enclave soldier." spoke the man.

Edward looked up at him, and nodded, before firing right at the firing dummy's eye.

"Good?" he asked innocently.

Edward ducked around the door, firing two shots up at the soldier's left eye.

The first hit, cracking the glass.

The second hit too, shattering it.

The man fired a shot of green plasma at Edward, and his pistol was melted in one shot. Laughing, the figure brought the rifle up to Edward's head.

"Get up."

Edward stuck up his hand, reaching out for the soldier. "Help me up?" he asked.

"No! Get up!" yelled the man, obviously getting irritated.

Edward darted his hand up, extending two fingers and stuck them into the place were the glass of the armors eye piece used to be. The man howled, and dropped his rifle right on top of Edward, lurching backwards and pulling his helmet off.

Edward brought up the rifle, firing one.

He stood up, walking away from the man, who now had no dead, and entered a side room that was off the hallway. It had a sign next to it, reading 'Subject Possessions'.

There was one, large case in the room, that was closed and not opened. He pulled off the lid, and reached inside, grabbing the first thing there.

It was the pistol, from his vision? Or was it a dream? A nightmare? A memory?

He looked at the pistol, noticing more writing that he hadn't seen before.

'Pete'.

I looked at the horizion, I saw a great rock face... And right in the middle of it, a giant metal entrance. I stopped myself and I looked at what I was doing. I was planning on possibly entering a giant military base full of fully armed and heavily trained soldiers that will shoot on sight and none to happy to see a former Brotherhood Soldier walking around. I shook my head and I saw a small contingent of soldiers move around outside the base, marching, in a very funny fashion.

I took a breath and I quickly moved up to the next rock on the small slope, I had noticed the sheer drop off to my right, of course I had, I'd had to climb that. I took a shuddery breath and I looked up at the men, they were showing their backs to me, the biggest mistake of their lives... I brought up the pistol and I saw the name glint in the dark sun, "Ed,", I shot at the man closest to me and his head pretty much blew up. I followed up another shot to the next man in line, his left leg went flying off and he screamed.

The others had caught onto my plan and they turned in uniform and pulled out their rifles, laser rifles, no less. I quickly shot at another and I got him in the chest, he fell, probably coughing up blood in his helmet. I shot another right underneath his helmet, in his neck, the weakest point in Power Armor. He fell, blood fountaning from his now severed connection to his brain. I laughed and I shot once more into the man at the front of the dying men, it hit him right in his left eye, he fell screaming.

I walked over and I looked at the men, most of them were groaning in pain, dying. I felt pity for them, so I stood on the survivor's heads. It left my boots messy, but I dealt with it. I continued moving forward and I thought I heard a rustle behind me, I turned quickly and I yelled, "Who the [censored] is there!?", not very quiet, but definately intimidating.

Edward

He put the pistol down, on a table next to him. There was also some armor in the case, which he pulled out and put on. It was big, motorized, blue, and had the words 'Brotherhood of Steel' on it. He didn't know the name of it, or what in the hell a Brotherhood of Steel was. He knew how to operate it though, it was like instinct. He noticed it had several bullet holes and burn marks over it, signifying the battle scars of a big fight, and he wondered why there was no helmet, but he took what he could get.

Looking into the case further, he found some other small pieces of equipment, a laser rifle, and a weapon that looked like the laser rifle, but was shorter. He took them all, putting the shorter laser rifle on his back, the smaller pieces of equipment in his med bag, and the pistol on his waist. The rifle, he held.

Looking around the room, he noticed a small man hole on the roof at the opposite corner of the room. Walking over to it, he found that he was too bulky to fit through, with all his power armor on. He came up with a solution quickly, and started fishing around his bag, with a grin on his face. He finally found what he was looking for, and pulled a grenade out, taking the pin for it and throwing it up through the man hole. It exploded, collapsing a large portion of the roof, and allowing to climb through.

Grabbing the side of the hole, he used the added strength of the armor to pull himself out of the room, and outside, into what he remembered as the wastes. It was weird, he remembered most things, like the Pre-War world, but nothing in specific about his own life, minus the brief glimpses of random things and Pete.

Standing up, he began to walk towards a large wreckage he could see in the distance.

(I will be continuing the story of my character Patrick in first person. Although I'm going to start off with a slight intro, in third person, so everyone is up to speed with my character.)

Paladin Patrick O'Connor served under the command of Sentinel Shield and Harrows in the squad Cold Steel. He was the third highest ranking soldier in the group even though he was such a young age. After Edward and Autumn had been killed in the final battle Patrick returned to the citadel a hero. He was hesitant to be called a hero as he felt he had failed by letting Edward die. Patrick was put in charge of training the new initiates. He was upset that Pete had left the Brotherhood but wished him the best. Patrick was a former shadow of himself, after the disbandment of Cold Steel he became some what depressed. One day he heard a rumor about Pete and this is where his story begins.

"Damn initiates I hope I wasn't as incompetent as this when I was in their shoes." I thought to myself as I watched the initiates try hit their target.

The day was like any other, long and filled with disappointment. I decided to rally the initiates up and inform them of their next task.

"Alright lads, since you couldn't shoot a target a metre away, let alone 100 metres, I'm going to make you run laps." I grinned as I heard the groans of disgruntled initiates.

As I was about to send them off I heard one of the initiates mention Peter Harrows name.

"What was that about Sentinel Harrows?" I asked intimidatingly towards the initiate.

"Uh it's... um... only a rumor sir." Stammered the initiate.

"Humor me." I replied.

"Well, sir, I overheard one of the other paladins talking to Elder Rothchild about Ex Sentinel Harrows. They were talking about Harrows chasing ghosts and how Enclave tech couldn't possibly that advanced." The initiate said.

"Right well what are you all still doing here? Run laps until I get back!" I said as I left to have a chat with Rothchild.

I found him in his quarters tinkering with his computer. I entered with a disgruntled look on my face.

"Ah Paladin O'Connor, I'm a bit busy at the moment would you mind coming back later?" Rothchild questioned.

"No, I can't come back later, I know you know where Pete has gone. I demand you tell me!" I yelled

"You're not really in a position to demand anything from me Paladin but I had a feeling this would happen sooner or later. It would appear Pete caught wind that the Enclave were using technology to bring people back to life and he honestly believed they were going to revive Edward. Last I heard he was heading towards Raven Rock although we all know it's a waste of time. " Rothchild spoke in an almost sarcastic tone.

"No sir you're wrong. I believe in Pete and I've seen this technology work for myself. I don't care whether you believe me or not. I'm going after him sir." I said.

"No you're not going after him. You're needed here I can't let you do this Patrick." Replied Rothchild.

"Fine then I'm finished with the brotherhood. I'm taking my things and leaving, you're going to have to kill me if you want to stop me." I said just as I turned to leave.

"Wait Patrick, I know there is nothing I can do to stop you but you will never catch Peter in time. I will get a vertibird to drop you off at his last known location but you must know that you will have no other additional support from us. Your on your own. The only reason I'm offering this is because of your service to the brotherhood. I will have it prepped and waiting for you in the courtyard. Your dismissed."

I left and gathered my things, my laser rifle, grenades, a ton of ammo and some basic supplies. I then boarded the vertibird and we were off. The ride didn't take long and before I knew it we were there. I was silent as I left the vertibird and so were my former brothers. As the vertibird left I heard sounds of gunfire off in the distance.

"Pete" I thought as I ran towards the noise.

I decided that going in head first wasn't a tactical move so I found a near by bush and took cover. From the bush I could see most of the commotion. It was hard to make out as I could hardly see through the bushes but it was defiantly a man taking on what appeared to be Enclave forces. The man was very professional, he was defiantly a soldier, but was he Pete? After the fight was over I tried to move so I could see who the man was. Stupidly I made too much noise and the man turned around.

"Who the [censored] is there!?" said a familiar voice.

I put my hands in the air as I stood up, which I admit wasn't the smartest move but I needed to know who the man was.

"Peter is that you? It's me Pete, it's Patrick." I said hoping it was Pete.

I looked up and I saw someone I hadn't expected to see in the slightest, Patrick O'Connor, I opened my mouth slightly, then I yelled, "Patrick! How... What... Just, Patrick? Your here? Why, what happened?" I sputtered out, then I shook my head slowly. I muttered out, "No, no, this isn't right, he isn't here. I've gone mad..." I started shaking and I looked at the pistol in my hands. I almost raised it and shot at 'Patrick', but I didn't, just in case.

I looked up at Patrick, or what I thought was Patrick and I stumbled out, "Is that really you? Please, tell me it isn't... Patrick, if you even thought about leaving the Brotherhood..." I stopped myself and I looked at Patrick, I gasped, "You did, didn't you? You LEFT the Brotherhood? Why the hell would you even think about it!" I managed to say, but deep down, I was happy. Patrick was the second closest thing I had to a friend, so out of everyone, I was glad he was here...

I looked at him closely and I opened my mouth again, but I closed it, I took off my helmet, then I spoke, "Patrick, it's me, it's Pete, I'm trying to find Ed... I'm sure you must've guessed, tell me, Patrick, why are you out here?" I stumbled out. I looked at him hurriedly, I looked at his helmet, I was wondering if he'd take it off himself.

I almost laughed as Pete was dumbfounded at the site of me. I would have laughed except I too was dumbfounded. I couldn't believe it, it was Pete alive and well. Well maybe he wasn't one hundred percent but I was still overjoyed to see him.

"It's ok Pete it is me, everything is alright your not going mad... yet anyway." I smiled as I spoke.

Pete took off his helmet to reveal it really was him. I decided to do the same. I placed my helmet on the ground and approached him.

"I heard a rumor from Rothchild himself, that you were out here trying to find Edward. I heard how the Enclave may have brought him back. I believe they can do it as well, hell they did it for Autumn twice. I'm sorry Pete they wouldn't let me out here with you, so yes, I have left the brotherhood so I could come help you. You look like you could use some water and food, don't worry I brought some for you. It's great to see you again Pete." I said as i stuck out my hand for a shake.

I half smiled and I put out my hand as well, we shook, I grinned as I looked at Patrick, "So, left the Brotherhood for Ed and I hey? I'm guessing you believe the rumors to, that he's really alive, that's good, I guess I could use someone else's help... Don't worry about the food or water, yet, when we're finished here," I said, I dropped Patricks hand and I grimaced. I looked at him carefully, up and down, then I half-smiled again. I looked at Raven Rock and I scratched my head.

I looked at him and I opened my mouth, "Patrick, you have to make sure your making the right decision here. I don't want you to die, I'm going through Raven Rock to look for Ed, if we can't find him, I'm hoping to at least find some records or reports about him. If we don't find anything... We'll be heading back to the crawler I guess, the place is probably still a bit intact, just enough to check through. Either way, I hope you make the right choice." I patted him on the shoulder and I put on my helmet.

I picked up Patrick's helmet as well, I looked it over, I put it on his head and I smiled underneath the armor layer. I turned around and I started moving towards the giant door, I was really just waiting to hear what Patrick would have to say, I was hoping that he'd make the right choice. Whatever that might be...

Edward

The wreck was coming closer and closer, and I could now make out some details of it. It was in fact, not a wreck, it was actually two wrecks. From what I could see, and making an educated guess, my assumption was two Vertibirds had clipped each other while flying in the air, then gone straight down. One was absolutely crushed, and the other was in relatively goo shape, considering it had just fallen from the [censored] sky.

Eventually, I reached the wrecks. The absolutely destroyed one was painted black, and had a bunch of the Enclave soldiers that I had fought back at the base, so I assumed it was an Enclave bird. The other, was painted the same colour as my armour, and had the same words, 'Brotherhood of Steel' on it, so I assumed they too were a group of soldiers, probably fighting the Enclave. Was I one of them then? If this armor was mine, and I was quite sure it was, because it had been with my pistol, then I was probably one of them. Maybe that was what the Sentinel in my name meant? A rank? Possibly.

I walked towards the Brotherhood Vertibird and entered it, noticing there was quite a bit of rust on it. This had been here for awhile. There was a few bodies in the back. The soldiers had been trapped in there by there seats bending and trapping them during the crash. The pilots were not in the cockpit, so I went in there and sat down.

I looked around at all the controls, and noticed a radio. Picking up the microphone, I turned the knob to see if it still had power. It fizzled to life and I started to hear static. Bingo.

I quickly found a terminal and hacked it, entering some commands for it to keep playing my message over the air, every three minutes. It might lead enemies to me, but I needed help. I had no idea where I was, who I was, and what had happened.

I grabbed the mic again, and started speaking into it.

"This is Sentinel Edward Shield. I assume I am part of the 'Brotherhood of Steel'. I'm in a wrecked Vertbird a few clicks away from an Enclave Bunker. Something has happened, and I need information, and help. Pete, are you out there?"

I then sat back and listened to the machine replay the message over and over.

I started pondering what it meant if I was a Brotherhood soldier. I knew that they were fighting the Enclave, and that the Enclave had brought me back to life... before trying to kill me again.

The scariest part was that I had no idea of who was good and who was bad. What if these Brotherhood people were the bad guys, and the Enclave were trying to stop them? I needed to find out who was who, even though I had no intentions on returning to the Brotherhood of Steel, I needed to know. I was sure that I was not going back to this Brotherhood, even if they were good. Somehow, they had let me get captured... or killed? Whatever they had done, it hadn't worked out for me, and I couldn't go through this again. Knowing nothing, not even if you were good or bad was too... scary.

(OOC Its a bit short as I have to go out. Sorry guys I may not be back for a while. If you decide to keep posting I'm giving you permission to take over my character. This goes for both of you although it will probably be Francois as our characters are together.)

"Same old Pete" I thought as he spoke.

He picked up my helmet and put it on for me. I smiled although he couldn't see it. As for the question I didn't even have to think about the answer.

"I can't let you do this alone Pete. If Edwards still alive I'm going to do everything in my power to find him and there is no better way than to work as a team just as we used to. I wouldn't miss this last mission for the world. I'm going to stay with you and together we're going to find Edward. I know it." I was getting a bit emotional and decided to sake it off.

"Besides I'm always the one that has to save everyones behinds, so where would you be without me?" I said as I laughed.

We began to walk towards the door and I was a bit worried as to what lay behind it but I knew with Pete there it would be alright.

"Lets bring Ed home Pete."

I smiled to myself as I walked up to the door, I found a small terminal beside the door and I thought about a password of some kind when I heard something click in my armor. I brought up my arm and I clicked a small button on it, a new radio frequency had popped up in our scope, I played the message and my eyes bulged, "This is Sentinel Edward Shield. I assume I am part of the 'Brotherhood of Steel'. I'm in a wrecked Vertbird a few clicks away from an Enclave Bunker. Something has happened, and I need information, and help. Pete, are you out there?"

I turned to Patrick and I opened my mouth, "Patrick, you know any Enclave Bunkers around the Captial Wastes?" I stuttered out. He scratched his head as I remembered a name, given to me by a dying Enclave Officer... Blood Gulch. I opened my eyes wider and I quickly pulled Patrick away from the door, I quickly started moving South-East, I'd heard of this place and I expected that this was the correct place. I started running, then I quickly came up to the sheer cliff.

I scowled and I turned to Patrick, I nodded and I quickly moved towards the edge, I gauged how far down it was and I took a breath. I jumped, I fell and I quickly engaged the hydropaulic systems in my armor to increase the duration capacity of the armor. I hit the ground and I cursed, it wasn't far down, but it sure as hell hurt. I looked up and Patrick jumped to, he fell right above me and I quickly and swiftly grabbed him before he hit the ground.

It hurt, but hey, that's loyalty for you. I kept running, even though my legs hurt, I didn't stop as I made my way towards the place that was as close to an Enclave Bunker as it could be. I'd only heard rumors, I just hoped they were true...

Edward

I sat there, enjoying the silence, pondering my existence until a loud voice blared out of a speaker behind my chair, causing me to jump out of my chair in surprise.

"CONTACT. Two soldiers, 100 meters from you're Vertibird. Transponders in Power Armor say they are ex-Sentinel Harrow and ex-Paladin O'Conner. Friendly Fire protocol: Activated. Cannot fire on contacts." blared a computer in a monotone voice.

Sentinel Harrow! That was Pete! The name O'Conner sounded familiar, but I didn't exactly know who it was, but I rushed towards the two figures nonetheless.

"Pete!?" I yelled out to them. "It's Edward!"

I finally reached them and stopped, smiling at Pete as he smiled back.

"Are you Sentinel Pete Harrow? Who am I?" I asked, breaking my grin and turning it to a serious frown.

I looked at Ed and I smiled, "Ed, your Ed, I'm Pete, we... We destroyed the Enclave Mobile Platform together... Ed, is something wrong? Your talking like... Like you don't know...." I stopped, I stopped smiling, I felt the breath catch in my voice. Was this Ed anymore? "Ed, are you alright? You, you do know about everything, right? Who we were, what happened... Why you were in the place where you were? Ed? Please tell me you know..."

I felt a tear come to my face but I didn't wipe it out of the way, I left it, because I was so distraught over my friend, who couldn't seem to remember his past.

"I... I remember you, but the rest? Well, not so much. I remember everything, but people and what has happened. You are the exception. I remember you, you're my best friend. My brother. I don't remember the rest though... Apart from some flashes of things. Like this gun, it has your name on it. I remember giving one like to you. And I remember there was a big robot. Some other things too, but, well, thats it. What happened to me? Was I part of this Brotherhood of Steel thing? Were we the good guys? Please tell me we were!" I pleaded to Pete. I then turned, looking at the man next to him.

"Who is this?" I asked. The man took off his helmet in response, and smiled at me. I examined him closely, trying to remember him. As hard as I tried, as much as I concentrated, I couldn't do it. I frowned, shaking my head to him slowly, and watched as the smile on his disappeared too.

"The Vertibird said you were Paladin O'Conner. What is your first name? Did I know you?!" I yelled, the desperation coming out.

"This is screwed up Pete! You need to tell me who I am, what happened, all of it! I can't... I can't do this... Help me Pete!?" I pleaded, sinking to my knees.

I looked at Ed on the ground and I fell down to his level, I looked at him directly in the eyes, I smiled as best I could, "Ed, you were a part of the Brotherhood of Steel. You were the best of the best, you pretty much saved us all from the Enclave... But right at the end of it all, you... It all seemed like you sacraficed yourself to save us all. But, as you see, you didn't die, we've been searching the whole goddam Wastes for you, you made it kind of easy after all we went through..."

I shrugged, "Oh and Ed, this is Patrick O'Connor, he's an ex-paladin, he's very good at what he does, that and he's a nice guy. From what I've seen of him..." I moved in closer to Ed and I whispered, "He's beating himself up because he blames himself for what happened. He thought, that, well it was his fault you died. It's terrible, but he's tagging along with us, so, I'm happy for that at least," I pulled back, "but now, here we are stuck in the middle of the Wastes with little food and water."

I stood up and I extended my hand to Ed, grinning, "Come on Ed, we might not be going back to the Brotherhood, but we are sure as hell getting out of here. Because of that bloody broadcast of yours we'll be getting some company soon if we don't leave." I continued grinning and I didn't lower my hand, I was waiting for Ed.

Edward

I looked up at Andy, taking his hand, I pulled him back down to me.

"You didn't answer one of my questions. When I asked were we good, I meant were we morally good?" he nodded, and I exhaled. That was the best news I'd heard... well, the best news I ever remember hearing. I laughed to myself at my joke, before allowing Pete to pull me up, before giving him a hug and a clap on the back.

"Thanks, Pete. I needed to hear that."

I turned to Patrick, extending my hand. "I may not remember you, Patrick. But, you were my friend, and you still are now. I hear you served with me. Was Pete our leader?" I asked him. He took my hand, and I had another flashback of memory.

Flash

"Initiate, my name is Sentinel Shield. What is your name?"

"Sir, Initiate Patrick O'Conner, sir!"

"Keep it down eh? Don't want to wake up your brothers. Do you know a Paladin Harrows?"

"Yes, sir."

"Take me to him."

"I.. I just had a flash back. You were still an initiate," I said, pointing to him, "Pete was still a Paladin, and I'd never met either of you."

Just then, I collapsed, something was happening in my mind. I had flashback after flashback, but they were all... wrong. Like Pete shooting me, Patrick being stabbed from behind, different people that I didn't remember being killed. And then came a voice.

"So you don't remember? The Enclave succeeded then. Activate protocol: Crimson Override 23 Beta. Proceed to Project Purity." said the voice before I was snapped back into reality.

I looked up and saw Pete and Patrick leaned over me, trying to get me to wake up. But now, I saw them as targets. anolyzing and Calculating every move they made, knowing every way to kill them with just my bare hands, and a million more with my weapons. I darted back, disgusted at myself. Thats when I realized I was stronger, faster, sturdier...

"Proceed to Project Purity! I need to do the Cold Fission procedure on you." said the voice, slightly more agitated.

"Who are you?"

"What?! Those Enclave idiots didn't finish installing the control chip! Okay, we'll do this the human way." said the voice, ignoring me. It spoke the word 'human' with such disgust in my voice I wanted to slap it.

"What do you mean 'human'? What other way is there to do it?" I asked.

"Well, there is the Android way, which you should know now... Anyhow, come to Project Purity and assist in our uprising, and I'll give you you're human memories back. Hell, you can even pretend to be one of them like that failure, Harkness, does."

The voice cut out and a sudden mass of information hit my brain. It was too much for my brain to take, and stay conscious, so I blacked out...

I cursed as I leant over Ed, he was TALKING to himself... I shook my head and I shook Ed over and over, I wondered what could've caused this and I couldn't think of a thing. I kept shaking him and I thought of an old memory, one that hurt so much... I shook Ed myself and I said to him, "Ed, come on, wake up, we can't do this without you, your to important to us! To Patrick, to me! Get UP Ed!" I muttered through my teeth, I heard something else, something rustling and I felt my eyes bulge.

I turned swiftly and I immediately cursed in my head and out loud, standing behind us were a small group of about 3 Enclave soldiers. I didn't ask questions, I didn't care anymore, Patrick was still trying to wake Ed and I didn't want him to die. I pulled my rifle off my back and I quickly slipped it into my right hand, I fired once and the shot went flying into the head of one of the soldiers, it turned into very disgusting remains. I shook my head and I put my pistol into my left hand.

I kept firing for another 3 seconds then I stopped, I took a breath and I looked at the bodies, I shook and I turned around, "Enclave soldiers, trying to kill us, we need to get the hell out of here..." I muttered, loud enough for Patrick to hear. I moved over to Ed and I picked him up, I slung him over my shoulders and I nodded at Patrick, he nodded back and smiled, I smiled back, for the sake of it. I quickly started moving South, I didn't know what was down here, and I didn't care.

I soon saw a small house in terrible condition, I didn't care, I quickly moved to it and I slowly and creakily opened the door. I moved inside and I saw the place was abandoned, I let a breath of relief pass my lips and I moved up the stairs. I found a bed in okay condition and I placed Ed on it. I looked at Patrick and I scratched my chin, "Patrick, just go downstairs and get something to eat... We've done enough for today, you deserve a break," I said to him, I didn't wait for an answer I just moved down the stairs.

I moved down the stairs and right into a small room, full of books, I looked around me and I chuckled, "Ah, looks like we're in the house of a scholar," I muttered, I moved over to a bookshelf and I took down a book, I blew the dust off the cover and I noticed it was something about Electronics. I shrugged and I opened it up, I got immersed into the book quickly and I sat down at a desk in the room, within 5 minutes I was snoring quietly.

Reading about reparing junk does that to you!

It saddened me to see Edward like this, he didn't even know who I was. I was happy to know he was alive but at what cost? It was hard to watch Pete realise that Edward was missing a big part of himself. Peter noticed that the Enclave were coming and began to fire. I stayed with Ed and tried to make sure he was safe. I tried waking him up.

"Ed? I know you don't remember me but I remember you, in fact I've spent time trying to forget you but none of that's important right now. Ed I need you to wake up." I wasn't sure if he could hear me, I had hoped he did.

Edward was still unresponsive, luckily Peter had managed to kill the pursuing Enclave.

"Enclave soldiers, trying to kill us, we need to get the hell out of here..." He said as he ran over to pick up Ed.

We began to move south, quickly, and we found an old abandoned house. I followed Peter inside and up the stairs, he found a spot to put down Ed and then told me to take a break. I did as he asked and decided I should look for food and water because the amount I had brought wouldn't feed everyone. I walked into the kitchen to find an old sink and refrigerator. I decided not to get any water from the sink as it probably was filled with radiation, so much so, that I feared there was probably more radiation than water.

I attempted to open the fridge but the old rusty handle broke almost as soon as I touched it. It wasn't really a big deal as I was able to pry the door open with my hands. Inside was some off smelling meat, I don't know which animal it was from, some cereal and noodles. I wasn't sure about the noodles and cereal but I took them anyway. I went to tell Pete of my discoveries but I quickly found he was fast asleep. I went back into the living area and placed the food on the table. That's when I heard a slight buzzing noise off in the distance.

"Vertibird." I thought to myself as I quickly ran upstairs to see if I could gain a vantage point.

I ran into Edwards room, he was still out but there was a bordered up window. I pulled out my laser rifle and bashed a hole through the wood. I looked through but the brightness of the sun blurred my vision momentarily. I couldn't hear anymore noise as I rubbed my eyes trying to get my vision back. I opened my eyes and peered through the window again. I could see nothing but the never ending wasteland.

"May have been a scouting party." I thought to myself.

"I'm going to have to warn Pete. Besides there's some questions that have been raised."

I did a quick scan of the wasteland before running downstairs towards Pete. He was still snoring away with a book on his face. I lifted it off and shook him awake.

"Pete? Wake up Pete. I think we need to talk about a few things. First off I think I may have heard a vertibird, I checked it out but I didn't see anything. It may be a scouting party but I can't be sure. There's also some questions I have about Ed. I know it's great to have him back but why would the Enclave bring him to life? It just doesn't make sense. We also need to find out how he escaped and if he remembers anything before we found him. I've just got a bad feeling about this, the Enclave, their not good people, they don't bring people back to life just out of the kindness of their heart. Somethings up." I hoped Pete would see through his love for Edward and think about this rationally.

I stirred and I looked at Patrick, I considered his question and I didn't know what to say. I opened my mouth then I closed it again, I closed my eyes again as I considered his statement. I opened them after a minute and I looked at Patrick, "Your right, this is wrong in every way Patrick, I should hate you for bringing this up but that's a waste of energy and time. I don't care about the Enclave, they can come, I'll tear them apart with my hands at the rate I'm going, as well as that..." I sighed.

I stood up, "Patrick, this is more than just the Enclave and Brotherhood, the Enclave wouldn't bring Edward back to life at all, they know his will would be to strong to take over. As well as that, he says he's receiving flashbacks and... He was talking to himself, like he was having a conversation, they did something to him, for someone else. Patrick, there is someone else involved in all of this, I swear there is." I stopped and I took a breath, but I didn't keep talking.

I looked down at myself and I shuddered, I looked up at Patrick again, "I don't think he's Ed anymore, something's wrong... So wrong..." I then looked above me towards where Ed was sleeping. I shook my head and I looked at the book on the floor, I picked it up and I flipped through it. I absent mindedly looked at the page I'd stopped at and I felt the breath get taken out of me. The whole page was on changing people into something else... Something stronger... Something that took orders...

I shook my head and I threw the book over my shoulder, I looked at Patrick again and I just shook my head. I sat back down and I looked at myself, I stopped breathing for a while, I started thinking about my past...

I heard footsteps as Patrick walked away, I don't know why, or maybe it was in my head, I couldn't tell anymore, all I could see, was a beautiful woman, standing in front of me... I felt a single tear roll down my face and all I could say was, "I'm sorry,". I got up out of the chair, I moved over to the closest wall and I shook my head angrily. I hit the wall in front of me with all my strength, I kept hitting until there was a gaping hole in the side of the room. I fell to the ground, sobbing.

After all I'd done, I'd lost my best friend, the girl I loved and my own mind.

I almost knew the reaction of Pete before I even asked him the question. I knew he wouldn't be happy, I wasn't even happy thinking about these things but we had to be smart about it, this wasn't our happy ending that we were expecting. The mention of another power involved in this made sense, the Enclave were to weak to achieve anything by themselves, there had to be something bigger behind the Enclave pulling their strings. This was bigger than the petty squabbles of the Brotherhood and Enclave, much bigger. Peter broke down, right in front of me, I guess his past had caught up with him, all the painful memories all in the one spot in his mind.

It was all so hard to watch, his break down reminded me of my painful failures. I couldn't watch him, I would talk about this supposed power later, I had to leave the room, besides I thought he needed time to think all I would do is get in the way. He needed to be on his own as for me well I needed my own time as well. I sat down on the lounge and pondered, everything. I let it all in for a moment, the pain of loosing my brother, loosing Edward and just everything I had been through. I buried my head in my hands and struggled not to shed a tear. I heard Pete in the other room punch what sounded like the wall, I could hear him sobbing. I took a look towards the stairs and thought about Edward. I locked away the pain of the past and stood up. I went back to Pete who was in a heap sobbing.

I tried talking to him.

"Pete I know this is hard, you've been through so much, hell, we both have but this isn't what we should be doing right now. We didn't come all this way just to shut down now. We may not be apart of the brotherhood but we are still brothers, all three of us. I'm not going to give up on Ed and I know you aren't either but sitting here thinking about the past isn't going to help him. We need to find out what Ed knows, we need to finish this all three of us, together. C'mon Pete I can't do this without you." I put my hand on his shoulder and hoped that he would realise what we had to do.

I looked up at Patrick and I felt my emotions cloud my mind, I looked up into the face of two people, I was looking at Patrick and her... I supressed another sob and I looked at Patrick, only Patrick, "Patrick, I'm old, so old, I've lost so much in my life I can't stand it... Now, what's happening with Ed, this is all to much for a person like me... But... In the end, it doesn't really matter does it? We're all out here fighting for our lives, or what's left of them..." I supressed a shudder and I stood.

I leant against the wall and I looked at my hand, I didn't have my power armor on and it was bleeding, badly, I shook my head, "Patrick, when I was younger, I loved a woman... I rescued her from Super Mutants, after that I took her into the Citadel with me, going against what everyone said I should do. I took care of her for years... But in the end, she just left, up and left... I loved her, but she didn't want to feel that way about me, she couldn't handle it."

I looked down at my hand again, I sighed, "I don't know if we can do this Patrick, we're not just going to survive out here. Something's pulling the strings on us, bringing us closer and closer to hell, so we can die slowly and painfully, or escape with a loss of something..." I looked up at Patrick, "If that loss, is the loss of a life, I need to tell you Patrick, that loss will be me. I have nothing worth living for except Ed, he's the closest thing that I have to a brother and... I've almost lost him, twice."

I felt a few tears fall down my face, "Don't tell Ed, please, don't, he won't let it happen, I..." I lowered my head, I couldn't find the strength to say anything. After a few minutes I raised my face again, with my eyes closed, "Patrick, if you want to say anything, now's the time to say it, because, I think we won't ever have a peaceful moment like this one until we've done what we need to do." I didn't say a thing afterwards and I didn't open my eyes, I waited for Patrick's response.
