Collectable card games

Post » Wed Oct 13, 2010 8:20 am

Me and my friend want to get into CCGs and we're wondering what games are the most fun to play. Obviously we've looked at Magic the Gathering since it pretty much created CC Games, but we are wondering whether you guys can recommend some other games that are good for beginners or not.

We have very little experience with these games, in fact the only one we've played was Pokémon a long time ago :P

Only the greatest CCG ever created by man.

STAR WARS

Not the one based off of the Prequels but the Decipher release of the original movies from 1994/5. It's been discontinued since (I want to say) 2000. But its still by far the most expansive and in depth game. You can still get the expanded rules (competition) which is a whopping 108 pages and pick through that to use what rules you want to (although the organization that wrote the rules frowns upon it; but if you aren't competing who cares.)

I see them on Ebay all the time for sale, be forewarned though, since it is no longer produced expect to pay a premium for even common cards. I stopped playing the game around 1997 and kept most of my cards...although I sold off a lot of the rares at that time to repair my car which, in retrospect was really stupid.

I had recently tried to teach my step-son how to play the game but since I've been out of it for so long the new rules were a bit confusing to me.

One of the coolest aspects of this game is that you can build low level decks with nothing but Stormtroopers and Rebel Troopers and kick ass against high powered decks that have a lot of rare character cards; ie: Vader, Leia, Han, Chewie, Solo.... as long as you put multiplying cards in, most officer cards will add power and defense to low power characters and some even allow you to deploy additional characters for free.

Man, I'm gonna dig my cards out this weekend and get a game going with my son.

Its nowhere near being useful to you, Exorince, but I wanna mention http://wtactics.org/. Its a pretty cool project, and I'm looking forwards to the point at which it'll become playable . If it were complete, it'd be a great option for getting started, due to the minimal cost.

Magic is pretty awesome, I just started playing again. You can get "The Deckbuliders Toolkit" for about 20$ it comes with 255 cards 100 of which are land. Its enough to make two decks.

I played Pokemon in middle school then Magic The Gathering. I still have all my Magic cards though which I am trying to sell, but I think a few people here on campus play so I can probably just talk to them about it and see if they are interested. I don't really trust Ebay enough to put my stuff on there. Haven't played either of those games in about 6-8 years now.

My brother and I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh, and I'm kinda ashamed to say I enjoyed it haha. Pokemon was good, too.

I'll third the Yu-Gi-Oh. I played for several years until the modern cards came out(5ds). Not really fond of them, though against my flip deck they still aren't much of a match ^^
