Collectors Edition or Normal/Standard Edition?

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:03 am

Will you guys be getting the Collectors Edition of the game, or the standard edition? I know they haven't announced it yet, but I'm curious to see if it will be, so far, more people than it was with NV.

I for one, will DEFINITLY be getting CE, even if it contains nothing extra more than an imaginary high five from one of the game dev's. I have my money saved up, and I'm just waiting for them to announce it so I can promptly pre-order it that day. What about you guys?

Hmm I dunno.

I'm not too big on boxes for my games, I think I might just buy it on Steam and then play it at midnight as opposed to waiting for it the next day.

Digital distribution is the future!

I think you should add a digital distribution option to your poll

On the few occasions I've actually shelled out the extra cash for a collector's edition, I've always been disappointed with the extra stuff. As a result, I no longer buy them; for what you get they're a waste of money.

I will definitely pre-order on Steam.

Don't care for boxes, discs, cloth maps or knick-knacks; however, if there is a digital premium edition on Steam I might buy it if it includes a download of the soundtrack and some unique in-game items.

Your going to wait like an additional year or so to buy it?!?!(However long it takes them) Have you been hit in the head?

Yeah if they had a premium digital edition with soundtrack + Maybe some in game items I would buy that for sure.

A year? It will be much longer than a year for a GotY to be released, they will have to completely finish all their DLC and possibly even an expansion like Shivering Isles in Oblivion before they release a GotY. He's looking at 1 and a half years minimum.

Oblivion GotY was released roughly 1 and a half years after original release, same basic thing for Fallout 3 GotY, I think a bit longer actually.

He must have hit his head. He must have.

Standard, don't particular care about the extra little stuff most CEs come with.

I'll definitely get the box though, I love Steam but it can complicate modding w/Bethesda games and I expect I'll want to mod TES V at some point.

You do know that Skyrim will work exactly how NV did with steam right? If I remember correctly one of the main dev's (Possibly Todd himself?) comfirmed it would use Steam as its DRM. So if you buy it through steam or not, your using it with steam... again. :/

I will get box too though. I want a hardcopy and manual for it and everything. :D

I have not decided yet. But CE most likely.
I hope CE has same cover and back as GI had.
I always love simple looking game boxes. :D

We already know what it will look like. It's solid black with nothing but the Skyrim logo/title on the front. It is plain and awesome looking. :D

I plan to get the collector's edition for PC and the regular edition for the Xbox. I will not state my reasons so as to not start a flame war.

Good idea. :) I would not want this thread closed for such a silly reason.

Well, that would be when the GotY edition is released, so the obvious answer of "yes" is also the correct one.

Have you been hit in the head?

Not in a good 20 years or so, no. Now if I had done so recently, I might consider putting up with all the release-day bugs and then being nickel-and-dimed for DLC to assemble the "entire" game- but see, that's what I'm planning on avoiding by exercising some patience.

Lol, your responses always make me laugh... except when I am the one that feels stupid... I better stop.

Also, seeing as how the game is coming out at the end of the year, a game of the year edition would not come out until the following year, which may be awkward, so it would likely be renamed to something like Gold edition, platinum edition, Dragonborn edition, etc... That last one just sounds stupid.

People do not understand that just because Oblivion and Fo3/NV were plauged with many a release bug, does not mean that Skyrim will. Infact, Skyrim is on a BRAND new engine. They have worked on it far longer and harder than most other games they have made in the past. And they have 100% complete understanding and control of said brand new engine. I am very confident there will be few bugs if any upon release. I also think they will patch them very quickly, as like 90% of the companies income and reputation lies on this series.

Normally, excercising patience can be good, but when something as awesome as Skyrim is coming out, there's no way. I'd get much more enjoyment out of it by buying it as soon as possible.

New engine= new bugs, while there will probably be LESS bugs than in Oblivion because it was carefully crafted, and does not contain old physics software, there will still be TONS of bugs, it is an open world game after all.

Probably true...I just got tired of typing my standard "GotY/Gold/whatever pack bundles it all together" response. :)

Uh...Daggerfall shipped with a non-functional main quest, and Morrowind needed its share of tweaks. I'm not picking on any particular game here. (Because the developer seems pretty consistent in my experience... )

And having dealt with computer software for a long long time, I don't even begin to see it this way. New technology/software means at best "Don't worry, we won't have all those same old bugs. We'll have infuriating new ones they have to track down and figure out."

No problem at all. You handle it your way, I'll handle it my way, and everyone's happy. Right? :D

I rarely buy collectors editions. The last one I bought was for oblivion. However, I will definitely be getting the CE for skyrim.

I plan on exercizing that kind of restraint with Dragon Age 2 after the rip-off job they pulled with their ultimate edition that had all the DLC + the expansion for less than what I paid for the original game. Not gonna get gipped like that again.

Skyrim though, don't think I'll be able to hold out that long. I'll want to be playing it as soon as is practical and modding once I've had the chance to finish it at least once through. Provided Bethesda doesn't make me mod in open cities or something in order to make it a proper game :P

I doubt I'll bother with a CE though. I've been burned enough by those in the past that I probably won't bite unless there's something truly compelling to offer.

I can't be bothered spending extra money on things that'll just collect dust at the back of a shelf so I just get the standard edition

The reason is was so cheap is because it did not sell as well as they had hoped, and they are nice, so they rapidly lowered the game price. You did not get 'gipped', you simply paid more to play it sooner. I would gladly pay 50 bucks to play Skyrim on release day, than pay 30 bucks to play it 10 months later. But this is also mainly because I want to hit the modding scene as soon as it exists. :D

I'm with Alois.

I'll do one of two things, buy the game a few months after release if it's cheap enough to warrant the purchase, or wait for the GoTY to come out.

Once you get yourself sufficiently "behind" in releases, it doesn't make much difference, and saves you a bunch of money.

I haven't tried Dragon Age, Medieval II: Total War, Dawn of War II, or any other relases in the past 2 years or so yet. I just played Saboteur, which cost me $7, and I got the same amount of enjoyment from it as I would have if I bought it for $60.
