Collectors editions. Are they worth it?

Post » Mon Jul 14, 2014 9:46 pm

I've never really been one for "Special collectors editions" and wonder what the fascination is with them. When developers push game in a special tin box it really doesn't encourage me to rush out and buy the game. These special collectors editions also don't seem to hold any extra value when it comes to selling them either, so my question is this: What is the point of paying over the odds for something that holds no additional value?

No not really imo.

The only CE I've ever brought was the FONV one cause I'm a huge FO fan and even that came with stuff that is now gathering dust (I liked the comic though).

I think some people just like extra goodies to come with their games.

Stuff has more than just monetary value. Now if they are worth the cost? Would yes and no. Really depends on the person. For me not really. For others, most definitely. No wrong side of this discussion imo.

I like art books so sometimes it is worth it to me simply for the book or for the making of dvd

I've never seen a CE that was a must-have. The occasional statue or goodie is nice, but would you really put it in your living room?

The collectors will tell you yes, they're worth it. The question of this thread could be valid for every single hobby on this planet. Yes, some people like to spend more money on CE and for them it's totally worth the price.

Usually not, but there been a few CEs now and then that managed to interest me enough to pre-order them.

Like Morrowind in 2002, Pirates! in 2004, Bioshock in 2007, Ni no Kuni last year and more recently Drakengard 3 cause I really wanted to read the included 160 page novel.

The only CE I bought and regret, is the one for Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Usually its the only way to get the art books which i collect, also i dont mind some of the statues, Witcher 2 i like the bust and the medallion, Fallout 3 bobblehead and lunchbox, Halo reach team statue and black box, but weirdest was Fear 3 naked pregnant Alma with a glow in the dark fetus, no idea what they were thinking with that, the tin cases ive never understood.

I only buy Collectors editions of game franchises i really enjoy (like the Tales games), as they usually come with great bonus's only available to the CE buyers that while may not add much to the game itself, it does provide memorabilia for us hardcoe fans.. (Art Books, Figurines to add to my ever growing shelf, the OST, exclusive DLC, posters, etc..)
