Colonies/settlements

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 7:30 am

I recently had a thought, what if we could build settlements like villages or colonies. It has to be near farmland, water(for fishing and trade) , mining, or lumber. The more the resource is harvested the more people will come and build houses that will eventually lead to stores and taverns. You can charge taxes and get profits from the resource you harvest.
The settlement can be formed if you buy land or finding resources and purchasing a mine. You convince homeless people or unemployed people to come and help set up.
It will add a realism that you can change the world of Skyrim and leave an impact. It will make a big hit for role-players.
Tell me your thoughts

Poll is broken. Needs options in every category for those who vote no.

Could be interesting. Would certainly need to be either a huge time and money investment, or alternatively it would have to have few rewards.

However, if it's not already in the game, then I doubt it will be now. If done properly, it would be a large and complex system, and as such, would likely not be polished by the time the game launches (since I would assume that they're well into debugging now; they'll need to start printing discs etc at the start of October, if not before)...

Precious little time left.

I voted yes for all of them, but highly doubt Bethesda COULD add this to the game. It would take a lot of time to make.

I voted yes. There needs to be an N/A vote on the other questions for those who voted No.

edit: Just remembered all those awesome mods for Fallout that let you build stuff. If those modders hop to Skyrim then I think Bethesda should leave it to those guys and gals. Changed vote to No, but I can't vote for the above reason.

I love this idea, I've thought a lot about it myself, but I can only doubt that Bethesda will include it. That being said, one of my big modding goals is to add a city in this manner. I've created a layout, and am working on a system to add residents to it. I like the income options for your poll, as I plan on including farming and mining (mining due to the location I'm planning on using, and farming because they need to eat). Creating your own city could definitely add a lot for roleplaying opportunities.

I like the idea, but I think it would take Bethesda more effort than it's really worth.

That would sound interesting

Well I voted no, but if this was to happen then you should only gain money from tax.

Two Worlds Two had a mode that did a pretty rudimentary concept of this and I thought it was kinda cool. If Bethesda could improve on that it'd be great. If it's not in game already there's always DLC.

An advanced, updated version of Raven Rock comes to mind...

I had fun with that.

I mean, just give me raven rock with the ability and the ability to tweak things a bit and I'd be happy. Raven Rock was one of my favorite parts of morrowind and I'm about to play Kvatch Aftermath. I have this feeling that if you are part of the city being built, it feels far more endearing, even if its less impressive than a real city.

I could see this working for a frontier fort, or the Hold you're supporting has you build one in order to become a lord, etc.

I would really like to see it for obvious reasons, it makes you feel as if you can leave a permanent impact on Skyrim
I would love to see it .

I kind of like the idea. Maybe not building a whole town, but it would be nice to have some power or influence over parts of the world or factions, and then see the world change based on your actions/decisions. It was kind of silly how in the past Elder scrolls you could become one of the most powerful and influential citizens in the land, but yet you had no real power or influence over how anything happened. The most important decision (and basically the only decision) you ever had to make in Oblivion was whether you wanted the fighters guild to recruit more members (be given equipment) or do more contracts (be given money)

I would love to become a lord of my own piece of land. Perhaps conquer and raid other settlements/rig their economy? Would add a lot more use to speechcraft, trying to convince settlers/peasants to come to your settlement.

People are really keen on keeping TES the way TES is meant to be. They also tend to refer outlandish ideas and their posters to try other games.

So, try Sims Medieval. Or Age of Empires II. (But not fable).
