The year is 2282. It has been five years since the Lone Wanderer arose from Vault 101 and set into play a series of events that changed the Wasteland forever. The Brotherhood, with the support of the Lone Wanderer, led an assault against the Enclave and destroyed Raven Rock. Yet in light of the attack, the Enclave launched a counter-assault upon the Citadel, where the Brotherhood just barely managed to hold on. Many of the Brotherhood were lost, including the Lone Wanderer, who was struck down in battle against the Enclave leader. Furious at the death of their compatriots and the damage done by vertibird bombings, the Brotherhood made a last stand against the Enclave at Project Purity. Although the battle was long and costly, the Brotherhood prevailed and forced the Enclave into a full-scale retreat. The few Enclave outposts remaining throughout the Wastes were left to fend for themselves until the Enclave mounted a rescue mission. However, despite the Brotherhood's claims to victory, the loss of life and destruction wrought prevents either side from truly claiming glory.
Within the last five years, numerous city-states have risen to power: Megaton has grown larger, absorbing Springvale in the process, while the Outcasts prepare for an attack on the weakened Lyons Brotherhood over its long doctrinal differences. Tenpenny Tower has annexed the Warrington Train complex and has since become a regional power, along with Girdershade, which has evolved into a central trading hub for incoming Westerners. Similarly, the Canterbury Commons have become a center for all Capital Wasteland trade. Raids from the Pitt, and the threat of enslavement by Paradise Falls keeps the North in fear, while Talon Company patrols are seen as far East as the Potomac. There are rumors throughout the Wasteland of a Creed of spies occupying The National Archives, as well as of a league of ghouls living in the Metro, while traders sail North from the mysterious land of Point Lookout.
