Combat Knife- Weapon vs Accessory

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 1:22 am

Yes, operatives can disguise as players from the opposite team but enemy opertives can see through there disguise (i think ) and they cannot atrack in any way or they lose there disguise. (I think this also applies for using abbilitys)

Edit: it was mickey who actually mentioned the opertives disguise ability :)

Sweet! That was one of the best things in TeamFortress 2

There do appear to be bayonets though, unless they were taken out. All they probably do is change your assault rifle melee attack from a gun butt to a stab though, increasing damage but not having a knockdown effect.

EDIT: And the difference between Brink and TF2/KZ3/etc. is that Operatives, even while disguised, do not get any sort of insta-kill backstab ability.

Well the last thing we need is for Brink to become like KZ3. I only played the beta, but it seemed like everyone was either invisible or disguised as an ally. Then they stab your eyes out. Had to spy check pretty much everyone you met.

The problem with the CoD knife is that it is both one-hit-kill and easy/fast/low-risk to use. Remove either half of that problem and its not nearly as annoying. You either end up with a high risk weapon that can kill enemies silently and quickly; or a low-risk weapon that gives you an edge in CQC if you use it properly.

Brink is clearly going with the latter, as melee attacks knock people over, or you can use the knife in combination with a weaker weapon (pistols). Neither is very high risk, as you are able to shot at all times.

This thread seems to be mostly a discussion about choosing one way to balance it over the other. I personally prefer the way they have chosen, as it doesn't seem very practical to be in a situation where being seen means you die fumbling for your weapon for a second or two. Wouldn't you at least have it readied in your off hand?

Indeed you would, but it would be great to have a knife you can see on screen instead of an off screen one. Plus the knife attack used will more than likely be either a reverse-grip slash or a reverse/ice pick grip stab. Both of which are poor options for range.

EDIT: plus, in the stealth scenario, you would require an off hand to grab the victim with while attacking. This would not be possible while holding a gun.

Until they updated the beta i had no problem telling whos disguised and i was a tactician so i had a advantage of a scanner thay detects enimies and pinpoints them on my screen at 4-6 second intervals, even disguised enimies.

And yes classes were greatly unbalancedand spy checking was always done because almost everyone chose to be a infiltrator or a medic (medc is OP) and we never had eniugh of the other classes, but i did get meleed alot, even spawn killed alot with somone disguised sitting at a spawn point and kills you from behind instantly when you spawn.

LOL, can we refrain from turning this into a KZ3 hate thread? KZ3 has a learning curve and clearly isn't for everyone. Perhaps we should leave it at that and contnue with the topic.

Learning curve? I had no problem playing until people started camping and using a full team of infiltrators and medics, i was god like until the update they did on the beta.

Good thing brink will actually be balanced.

The curve part must mean that it goes downhill once people learn how overpowered Medics and Infiltrators are. :frog:

But yes, enough about that game I'm not getting. Let's talk about this game that I am getting, even if it's the last thing I do.

The tactician's ability was SO overpowered. It could detect almost anyone, through walls, and made the tactician without a doubt the most powerful class, with the most versatile weapon in the game. Infiltrators aren't hard to spot, they're just something you need to get used to ie. learning curve. The move odd, they always sprint and you can see through their disguise by dragging your crosshair over them.

Seriously, very little has been done to the infiltrator in terms of nerfing and the complaints about them have dropped drastically.

Now back to the subject of melees, the Brutal melee is balanced because it requires time to pull off, and you can be saved while it's happening if your team step in quick enough.

Medics especially are not overpowered. They have the ability to get up after death ONCE if nobody finishes them off, but the kill still counts both on the score and on their K/D. Its basically just a spawn, and your own fault for not finishing them.

I assume you have KZ3, trust me medic is OP.

A lmg that you can easily kill at any range, ability to revive others, a personal sentry drone that follows you around and stays even after death, and the ability to revive yourself, and when fighting the drone which acts as a sheild so you need to kill the sentry first most of the time before you can kill the medic, and while fighting multiple enimies inluding the sentry, its not your fault for not killing him while hes down, usaly there all medics so imagine nedding to kill 4 or 5 guys twice plus a sentry each. A team of medics is way over powerd.

Like I said, I only ever played the beta. And to be honest I didn't see all that many Medics. I did try the class out in botzone though and the ability to revive yourself once and that little support drone really helped a lot. (didn't play the actual multiplayer part very long; terrible lag and constantly getting my face ventilated made for a rather awful experience)

Regardless, Brink does not have any one-hit-kill melee attacks, except for a knife against a Light guy with no health buffs, so we won't have to worry about that sort of nonsense in this game. As for the question of whether or not the knife should be its own weapon I have to say nay. I like things the way they are, where the emphasis is clearly on the guns and the shooting elements, with melee'ing as an option, not a playstyle in its own right.

I assume you don't have the game, your experience of gameplay is clearly outdated.
All guns except the shotgun can kill at any range.
Medics are one of the most underpopulated classes in the game at the moment.
And I don't know where you're getting the idea that the sentry needs to be killed first, they're weak as, and don't often kill you by themselves.

..Also, how is reviving OTHERS op? You know that's in Brink as well right?

EDIT: the sentry drone does NOT stay after death. It stays while you are in last stand. If you finish the medic, the bot explodes automatically.

Well i played the beta and yes almost all the guns kill from any distance but the lmg has the same accuracy as the m8 assault rifle when used right.

Also i never said reviving is OP i said when theres a whole team of medics with sentrys can revive eachother.abd themselve. It becomes unbalanced.

Also i did noy say sentrys NEED to be killed first i stated that they act as a sheid and ussaly block me from shooting the medic so in some cases i the best option is to kill the sentry first.

And no i did noy buy the game because i was greatly disappointed with it, KZ2 is a better and more balanced game imho, i was going to buy it and was excited for it until i read more about it and how there screwing there fans over, but thats a long story i dont care to explain right now.

So we need to get back on topic and no mote KZ3 or a mod will probably lock it.

I'm actually pretty sure the knife in Brink is a pull out and insta-stab thing. It's unwise to use it against a full-health enemy, though, so it's used for backup/extreme close range.

Well is it like you press the melee button and you stab it into the guy (the knife is held like you would hold it if your stabbing somone in the face) or is it like cod which is similar (when stabbing not slashing) but its faster, wait do you stab when knifing or it is only in singleplayer/nazi zombies?

With many games these days combat knives are often used as an accessory like in call of duty where you just press in the stick and almost instantly, something comes flying across the screen that looks vaguely like a knife and then your gun instantly pops back up. This makes the combat knife feel like an accessory rather than an actual weapon. It is also very unrealistic when it comes to how fast you pull it out and put it back in. Why is the knife any less of a weapon/tool than a gun? Why not have different knives with dual functionality as well?

Who wouldnt want to be running and jumping all over the place with some wicked awesome combat knife being held out on the screen?

This game also has the punky look and feel to it, a knife as a weapon rather than accessory wouldn't even further magnify these aspects?

1) The art style is very much punk like and benefit with the look and feel if it were to have combat knives as weapons
2)The SMART system would put the knife to better use than in other games. Being able to move around with more agility over and under obstacles. gives more purpose to the knife as a weapon.Maybe you could put the knife in your teeth when you are climbing up stuff lol.

What does everyone else think about this?

I have read that you can only pull out your knife when you have your pistol out. So says the Brink Compendium.

Oh. I have no idea. I didn't pay that much attention. I've only played Brink for about 30 seconds!
