Combat seems too easy....

Post » Fri Aug 26, 2011 9:12 am

If they make the player character super high level or invincible or whatever, how are we supposed to get an accurate picture of how this game will play? Will enemies always go down in a few hits, but the player can also? Will enemies take a few minutes to wear down? Will I need to employ blocks and bashes and dodges to stay alive, or will it be just as easy to smash an enemy repeatedly until they fall over?

What exactly is the point of these previews if not to showcase how the game will play?

Cause most developers doing a live demo feel that the player character dieing is worse then stupid strong characters

You do realize that they are playing buffed up demo characters that are near immortal with endless polls of magicka

The point is to avoid dying against more powerful enemies and having to start all over again.

Obviously that's the point for buffing up player health or damage or whatever all they are doing. The question was, "What is the purpose of the demo?" Is it not to showcase gameplay mechanics? How can you properly display that when you've stacked the deck unnaturally in favor of the player character? If I have to make a million assumptions about how the game is actually going to play when things aren't rigged in my favor, what exactly has this preview previewed?

You're better off just describing the mechanics and the numbers if you're not going to give me an accurate picture of how things actually work.

ADAPT TRYHARDS!

Oh wait, wrong forum.

I can believe that they would make the game real easy for the reviewers. To make them feel good. I just hope that they don't extend that logic to bad players... Or is it too late?

Then again, as the above poster pointed out, if the demo is rigged, then isn't Bethesda being dishonest? And if it isn't rigged, then is this game going to be Kingdom Hearts without boss fights?

The on floor demo is timed, as there were huge lines.. How would you feel if you waited an hour in line.. only to die instantly?

I don't know, that would depend on how I died. But since it's a timed demo, I'd probably just restart and get back to playing. Whether I waited in line or not doesn't matter, I have a guaranteed one hour of play time, don't I?

They started out with very good quality equipment and... well they're level 1.

Were the first bandits, rats and mudcraps a giant threat to you in Oblivion or Morrowind?

Didn't Todd's PC have 999 health and had all stats maxed? That is why it looked easy in the demo

Especially the difficulty, it was no doubt at easy-normal.

Reading that impression, he mentions that he's found an epic silver claymore that's made out of fire and its stats are a lot better than his original axe, that would explain how he could one hit things.

Also he mentioned that the fireballs that the vampires threw at him nearly killed him, so yeah...

He said he was a low level but found that claymore and with one swing or something killed both vampires. He also killed the guard simply. I really hope its just on super easy, but then again if the vampires damaged him alot it may not be. This and that whole locked dungeons thing is worrying to me

It does sound like he was killing vampires in one hit at level 1. That's not very encouraging, so hopefully it was on very easy and/or Todd mode.

The only monsters they've really fought so far are wolves and maybe the occasional bandit. Plus if you think it's too easy when you play just turn the difficulty up.

In Oblivion "turning the difficulty up" made battles prolonged to 50 hits. I don't call that difficult, I call that bad game design.

If they "fix difficulty" in Skyrim, then turning the difficulty up may actually be a valid choice now.

If this refers to the dungeons being 'level locked', that's only a good thing.

I agree. Everything we've seen and heard about so far makes the game seem like a boring breeze--maybe fun....but I want a challenge. I want my character to be on the same level as my enemies. I dont think bosses and beasts should be the only challenge.

With less emphasis on blocking and more emphasis on duel-weilding and super-powerful magic...I get the feeling we're gonna be a god from lvl. 1 on up. I hope there is a significant build-up and that even those lowly bandits give you a rung for your money right away.

AND AS FOR DIFFICULTY.... When I turn the difficulty up I dont want to just make it take 100 more hits to kill an enemy, I just want to make the player more on par with common humanoid enemies.

Look at the E3 demo, when the Giants hit Todd even with 999 health one Giant takes out a pretty big chunk of Hit-points with each hit and during the fighting with the Dragons his health goes down pretty low. I think you have nothing to worry about, granted that's an Alpha build and may have tweaked some things but still it gives you an idea of their mindset of difficulty.

Exactly. 15 minutes of swinging a weapon at a goblin warlord or walking backwards across the entire Capital Wasteland while shooting a Super Mutant Overlord isn't the kind of "challenge" I'm looking for.

Dragons are bosses and I mentioned them being powerful. I'm talking about other humanoids that I engage in combat in. It makes no sence I can slash at a guy twice and he is dead on the other hand it takes him 22 hits to kill me.

Even with bolstered stats Todd's character took considerable damage from attacks in the demo. I think Bethesda may have increased damage universally, making combat more realistic. People are typically felled in one slash in real combat (monsters and powerful or well armored opponents will likely take more, understandably) and if you take a similarly high amount of damage it will make the game harder and more realistic. Fighting that involves hacking through droves of opponents, each of which taking 10 + hits to kill, and coming out unscathed like in Oblivion's exhausting combat style will be replaced by shorter, high intensity combat sequences if what we have seen so far is indicative of combat in the final game.

Like has been said - it's kind of hard to judge this sort of thing based on pre-release demos. They're always pretty heavily planned-out, with a lot of various tweaks - even if they aren't on "god mode." When dealing with a limited specific amount of play time, it's pretty common to work on making sure those demoing the game aren't spending more time dying than playing the game.

The thing is if they even were on easy one hitting is ridiculous especially after JUST starting a new character. Whats the point in building my character up when I can go up to a guard on a horse and kill him that easy...... it makes me sick. Guards should kick your [censored] at the beginning. It is fun to progress your character and with time know you can stand a chance against something. It builds your character better rather than coming out and slaughtering everything in your path........ that's not RPG-like

Dude they maxed stats on them so the people don't have to spend 5 of their 60 min dead

Edit: spelling

I think it's too early to say considering the presets they use on these demos etc etc. The only real worry for me is if it's as easy as when Oblivion was released I personally felt that was even too easy, I want an actual challenge that I have to flee from when it gets that rough.
