Combat ''System''

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 11:44 am

This topic is about the combat ''system'' Skyrim will have.

I start of with some things people talked about with the combat system.
Many people has been talking about the newly bought up Arkane Studios (The newest member of the Zenimax family, congratz XD) That they are helping Bethesda with their combat system. Arkane Studios are really good at doing the realistic sword combat and such. They have made a game called Dark Messiah Might & Magic which has the best 1st person sword fighting in a game imo, a great game.
I've made some videos with the combat system from Dark Messiah. I svck at playing it so you don't have to tell me that.

Video 1, fight against goblins, orcs and undeads.
http://www.youtube.com/user/Left4Candy?feature=mhee#p/a/u/2/YAPb7QA648w The video is to dark, noticed it after i uploaded it.
Video 2, fight against 2 bosses, cyclop and orc.
http://www.youtube.com/user/Left4Candy?feature=mhee#p/a/u/1/k-htalfkGAU
Video 3, fight against humans? and orcs.

Discuss what you think about the combat and what you whould like Bethesda to add (hopefully they will read some of your wishes, no guarante)

Wow, thats really impressive. Is this game on steam? XD

OT: I think somewhere along the lines of an automatic parry and counter attack system similar but a more upgraded version of assassins creed

^

I think that would make it more realistic apart from the slash to death, considering parrying will be 90% of the fight, I dont know how that'd work with more than one opponent though?

Nowhere is it said Arkane is helping bethesda studios who is working on Skyrim....

Arkane was bought by Bethesda softworks (or zenimax? im not sure) and they have their own project they are working on, are they giving tips/pointers? maybe, are Arkane devs working in the same office/floor with bethesda doing combat? no as far as we know that was never stated, just assumed by a bunch of peeps.

Are you in control of all the weapon twirling / fancy stuff? To be honest, that's the kind of stuff I don't really want to see in a TES game, especially if it happens at random when I click the mouse to strike someone.

It's been said a thousand times, but Mount & Blade: Warband is the game Bethesda should take inspiration from when it comes to combat.

This combat system is fantastic! Really, DM was probably the most fun I had fighting in first person with swords in a long time... this combat system mixed with Bethesda's Graphics and Storylining ability, would make one hell of a game. Not to mention. The Arkane Combat system has probably improved since DM as well.

^ Most definatly, I could see how that would work holding LT to block and useing the RS to determine which direction you block

I dream of a new Battlespire-style game by Arkane studio. One ES project a four to six years is too few...

so it should have animations even worse than Morrowind's?

Mount & Blade's combat is only a good model if you're referring strictly to mounted combat, and even then it's only a good model because it works in that game. most of Warband's maps are very flat, allowing you to build up speed on a horse and take a dude out, but there's almost no chance of there being numerous areas like that in Skyrim. mounted combat in Warband on the hilly/mountain maps is literally impossible, intentionally so.

also infantry combat is pretty much terrible compared to really any other game with first-person melee combat ever.

Todd said the player can perform more than just "finishing moves" if that's what they are I guess I don't remember where he said that but he also said something about jumping and attacking

Agreed. Everything I have seen of Skyrim's combat so far looks better than that, imo.
Although I play third person 99% of the time.

Dark Messiah had some really kickass combat and I really hope Skyrim goes much more that way, it was awesome. Not a terribly great game though, alot of bad acting, a generic and at times nonsensicle plot, and not enough RPG elements for my tastes.

I've fought lots of battles in Warband on very hilly maps with steep slopes - even mounted battles.

And that's your opinion. I like the infantry combat in Warband. Obviously it would need a lot of polishing before going into a game like Skyrim, but I think it's a good example to work from.

He said take inspiration from, not completely replace with. I think that quite a few aspects of Mount and Blade's combat that were great, as a high level during sieges getting behind the enemy lines and chopping them down from behind as they attempt to climb the stairs to the breach in the wall is just so satisfying. :3

Why else would they call it.... MOUNTAIN BLADE

Yeah...

The twirling's just the drawing animation for the sword, and parrying for the staff.

Seems a bit gimmicky to me. I wouldn't want that in Skyrim.
