Combat training? Yes please.

So if anyone is like me, and didn't just constantly abuse the backpedal/spam method of fighting in Oblivion, you should know that the fighting can actually be quite fun. I actually bothered to go around fighting whatever I could to figure out how to fight in melee combat the best way. (Waiting until just when the enemy is attacking to block, using the various power attacks to their advantage, etc.)

That's fun and everything. Makes you explore and fight a bunch to get a feel for the mechanics. However, I found it stupid that you would pay someone for training, and it would just boost your stat by one level. Not only that, but every other guild/faction that used melee seemed to always be practicing. I always wanted to practice! I'd take a better feel for combat controls, over a few levels in said combat skill. I really hope there is a way in Skyrim that you can actually practice your skills without being in a real fight. Especially if your paying for training.

Also, I'm sorry if something like this has been posted before.

Well, I don't mind Oblivion "pay for training" paradigm, so this isn't something I'd be too interested in. It sounds like it could be unbalancing.

When I first got Morrowind, I found a mod called "Balmora University", which was kind of fun an offered full training, which you could pay for. I installed it and it basically ruined by game - I could level up to level 30 in no time.

I'd like training to be limited and expensive.

That's actually much different. He wants other players to teach him it sounds like.

Sorry, I should have specified better. I didn't mean you'd be able to gain levels from this training. I only meant get used to the controls for fighting. Increase YOUR skill at fighting, rather than your character's. That sounds slightly less intelligent than it did in my head.

Okay, I think I see what you're saying, from the perspective of someone who died a lot when she first started playing Oblivion - and I mean a lot. Still, isn't that what lower levels are for?

Or the Arena? I truly learned to fight in the arena.

Arena is all right. And granted it does serve a very similar purpose. But for someone who maybe wants to play the whole thing on hard, arena just doesn't cut it lol. Not that I want to play it on hard, but I'd just like to be taught all the ins and outs of combat by an NPC who doesn't want me dead. Kind of like assassin's creed. You've got plenty of guards to kill, but when you learn a new move, your able to go and practice it. So the NPC may say "I'm going to keep attacking you randomly, try to block right when I attack. If you do it right, you may just create an opening by staggering me."

Since we can challenge and be challenged to duals now, I think combat training is something we'll see.

Yeah, but I'm on 360, which is why I want the feature to be built into the game.

this is a good idea without the leveling up bit.. otherwise new players will end up switching to easy to get use to the game but then the enemies die too quickly and they never get use to the control properly

the speed of backpedaling has been reduced making it impractical in combat

Yeah, I'm not worried about that. I simply meant if you were a person who actually fought the way you were meant to in Oblivion and weren't uber cheap, you may like this. Basically.

So ur saying kinda like a LoZ game where Link can go up to a certain AI and learn to train ? Basically like all the basic moves from this one and later on he learns a different attack and someone teaches it to him

I think it's a pretty good idea myself, at least as just something that a player could choose to do. To me, there's just about nothing in Oblivion more satisfying than timing a power attack with a claymore exactly right and catching an opponent on the tip of your sword just as they're charging. It takes a while to learn that timing though, and I can see how it could be of benefit to have a way to practice and learn it outside of real combat. And, as you say, everyone else is always practicing anyway. There's something to be said, from a roleplaying perspective, for just picking up an iron sword, stepping onto the mat and trading blows with a fellow fighters guild member for an hour or two.
