[Discussion] Combat with Synths

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 5:48 pm

In the demos (specifically that kill montage demo with the "Atom Bomb Baby" song), we could see that some synths have lost some of their limbs e.g. left arm. Considering that, and that they are mechanical beings, does this imply that crippling one of their limbs wouldn't do much to disable them?

If that is the case, then Synths will make for a terrifying, relentless kind of enemy, stopping at nothing to terminate you.

Also, we could see that some Synths use energy weapons that use different kind of beam than laser (a blue one). Some forumers has pointed out in the past that they are cryo weapons.

What do you think?

I think your best bet will be a few crippling head shots.

And some leg-shots that may or may not cripple their leg-servos...

They'll probably be just like robots in other Fallout games.

There was a part of the montage where a synth got their face shot off and it revealed a more mechanical under-face. Totally awesome. Not sure what that means for crippled limbs, but it's cool nonetheless. Maybe they can even lose limbs and continue fighting.

the more animated instances before ragdoll death, the better. from walking, to limping, to crawling, to them dying. rather than every enemy just having a ragdoll as soon as their health transpires. more indications of cripples and low health.

i think that an enemy with the endurance of a robit and the intelligence of a human should be an absolutely vicious enemy, maybe not quite terminator but it should be close

perhaps they'll have a high resistance to regular bullets, and a lower resistance to plasma and laser weaponry...they also seemingly use their own unique weapons, at least from the gameplay...... they could prove to be difficult to fight at an early stage, especially if they are resistant to regular weapons.

I hope some of them (a variant) have a small chance to reboot when you're not looking and crawl to you to squeeze your life out O_O creepy

They could be terminators if you give them miniguns... *gasp* Don't let those people from the Institute hear what I've said

In the trailer, a raider flinches when you pistol-whipped him. Is this a good indication?

no.. that is likely just a finisher move, similar to what we had in skyrim. Basically it's an animated kill, before a ragdoll death. predictable and not dynamic in any way shape or form.

I'm guessing pulse grenades will be the most effective.

Aw :( That's sad... But, I might be wrong, isn't his healthbar not depleted to zero when you do it? I slowed the video down O_O

I hope it would make shut down instantly (for weaker variants), or at least disable them temporarily and damage them in process...

maybe it wasn't the end of the animation? (i.e they cut out the rest of the fight). To me it just looked like a triggered animation.

in the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R, sometimes after a prolonged gunfight you find one guy still lying on the ground begging for his life or bleeding out. It didn't happen always but it was a good thing for general atmosphere and roleplay.. you could show mercy, walk away and leave them to die, or finish them. basically putting npc states like that adds another state between the state of health and death, expanding the chemistry of combat.

GTAV had a state where enemy would be shooting you while injured on the floor.. just another example.

I hope they really do that... I always hated the "I YIELD, I YIELD!" move in Skyrim, and then they all go "Can't wait to count out your coin!" again -w-'

I think that by their very nature, Synths will prove to be extremely challenging opponents. Firstly, they appear to be highly adaptable to combat situations, even continuing to fight with damage to their face, as seen with the Synth Assaulter who takes two direct shots that would have instantly killed any human enemy. Also, they seem more than capable even with broken limbs and other structural defects, which certainly does give a distinct 'terminator' feel. And their Cryo weapons would appear to use the equivalent of frost damage, as seen in Skyrim, and if so would likely slow down and eventually stop your rate of movement as well as damage your health.

But what I find most interesting about these units is the way they look. They are very different in appearance to the androids we see in Fallout 3, and they look far more like actual 'killing machines'. But not only this, their appearance could suggest an early production model designed by the Institute that were perhaps listed for termination. The first one we see in the E3 demo has what looks like fire damage to its face and parts of it's body. And the second one also has other structural damage. So perhaps they were sent to a 'disposal site', but some of them either did not die, or managed to escape and have now gone rogue.

If this is the case, and these formidable enemies are actually rejects, then what else have the Institute created that would be even more terrifying?

... Maybe they could have synths that are modeled on stronger species e.g.super mutants, although the more likely possibility is that the Institute might have created weapons that have the same power as Helios One's ARCHIMEDES, no, maybe even greater. The big explosion (and what looks like an orbital beam) might lead to that notion...

The original "Die by the Sword" [from 1998], was a fully 3D game that featured melee combat with location damage/retexture for wounding from weapon hits, force determined damage ~as in hit harder/faster and do more damage; and limb dismemberment at any joint, including the head (instant kill). Enemies that lost a leg changed over to a hopping animation.
The game even shipped with a user animation app that allowed custom combat animations that they created in the app, exported to the game, and assigned to hotkeys!

I don't expect any of this in FO4; I didn't see any of this in the demo. But why not? That was 17 years ago.

It would really be refreshing if synths did react inorganically to limb loss, and changed tactics on the fly to make the most of their remaining limbs. I'd love to see a synth pick up their own severed arm and beat up the PC with it, but I expect that they will default to stock raider animations, same as most humanoids.

FO3 had the option to shoot a robot's circuitry, and cause them to turn berserk on their allies [IIRC]. Perhaps that will be in place for targeted synths as well.

I really hope that if they lose all their legs, they could still crawl at you while attacking/shooting. One thing that is unnerving about mechanical construct is their resilience and persistence. Knock a toy robot down, and it will still try to walk until you turn it off. Unfortunately, you're right :( It's likely that they will utilise stock humanoid animations...

Oh, and what part do you think will frenzy them?

I don't believe they walked around with missing limbs in the trailer. The part with the dog attacking a one-armed being was a Ghoul. I'd imagine though that headshots or bodyshots would be the way to go when attacking a Synthetic.

If an android is tougher than a Sentry Bot, I'm calling Robo BS.

There's one in the early part of the trailer, missing his left arm, shooting you with a pistol...

I think it might not be tougher than our old friend Sentry Bot, but I think they are more numerous. We still don't know all the thing they could do though...

If my speculation that some of them could "reboot" while we're not looking, we are doomed ._.

Then take out your melee weapon and engage in dismemberment. Problem solved.
