Come hither, my horror-loving chums...

Post » Sat Mar 12, 2011 7:06 am

Okay people, here's the dealio: my roommate has gone on vacation to the Yucatan Peninsula*. As a result, I have the apartment to myself for the next two weeks**.
"Well, what does Metro do when she is all aloney? On her owney?" you may be asking yourself.
Why, my friends, she scares the ever-loving piss out of herself, is what she does! : D

You see, I have a slightly masochistic tendency when I am left to my own devices, and that is to inundate myself with scary things. Creepypasta, movies, games, books- you name it. The problem is, I don't generally scare easily, and I've pretty much exhausted my avenues at this point.
I'm making this thread for two purposes: share some of your favorite horror media, and suggest things other people might like. Link to stuff. Share your experiences. Hell, make [censored] up if you want: the night is long, and I am bored.

I'll start, shall I?
I've been playing Amnesia: the Dark Descent lately. I'm not terribly far into the game, as I hate spoilers and am trying to figure as much out myself as possible. I was also fortunate enough to go into the game completely blind (meaning that I know only the smallest amount about this game, not that there's something terribly wrong with my eyesight). I quite like the game so far; I'm a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft, and the atmosphere really has a chance to shine.
Also, I don't know about you, but I about pissed myself when that... THING... ambushed me in the Guest Room. >.>

Perhaps it's the result of growing up under the influence of an older brother, but 'gory' horror really doesn't affect me. Slasher flicks, zombie movies, and the like... meh. There's only so much Red Dye #2 you can be inundated with before it becomes banol.
Surreal horror, on the other hand, is one of my favorite genres. And for such a genre, there is no greater master than David Lynch.
Even if you aren't out-and-out scared by his work, I can guarantee you will be confused and unsettled by it. It's impossible to watch his movies and not have at least one 'what the hell is going on' moment.

My favorite film of his? Eraserhead. One of the best horror movies I've ever seen, and one of very, very few to seriously mess with my sleep cycle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBpd5xy-vCY.
Seriously, if you haven't seen it yet, go do so. It's both wonderfully artistic and wonderfully weird.

And I'll leave you with links to a few of my favorite short videos, courtesy of the Tube of Yous.

get the game amnesia. im very hard to scare but i literally cannot finish the game and when i try i have to stop after 20 minutes or so to regain some sanity. the same developers also made the penumbra games but only the first two are actually scary the third one is fun but its purely a puzzle game.

I can't remember the last time I actually got scared watching a movie. Paranormal Activity, for some stupid reason, unsettled me a little bit, but that's all I can remember. The Human Centipede is the first in a while, just in terms of squirm-factor, but I don't consider it in any way a horror movie. I was horribly let down by that movie.
The intro to The Hills Have yes (remake) for some reason unnerved me. The footage of bombs and the mutated babies just really freaked me out. I loved the move but it didn't scare me, just that start unnerved me.
Does Repo: The Genetic Opera count as horror? I hope so, because it's a movie that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who is a fan of both musicals and dark, gory film. The two are combined amazingly. In fact, simply everyone should watch it. While some parts of the storyline are a little undeveloped, and you may get a little bored of the singing, the film is overall fantastic.
OP, have you read Stephen King's Dreamcatcher? While it's hard for books to do any decent scaring, it does a pretty good job in terms of being just a little creepy. It's also one of my favourite Stephen King books. The Mist is also a good one in terms of creepiness, the movie is just rubbish.

http://www.fat-pie.com/dogofman.htm. I have always found this creepy. Actually, anything by David Firth is creepy.

have you watched http://www.youtube.com/user/MarbleHornets?

you should watch http://www.youtube.com/user/MarbleHornets.

also if you like Amnesia you should totally play Penumbra. it's the same basic style of game but there's less hiding and more running. i remember spending a good chunk of the beginning of the first game lugging around a giant rock that i'd grudgingly put down to solve puzzles, even though i knew it probably wouldn't be of much help.

Wuh... buh... but I just said I was playing it. In the OP.

I quite enjoyed Uzumaki (also, The Enigma of Amigara Fault). Junji Ito is a warped and evil geniusssssss. :3

I love that movie. Dystopia? Ogre? Anthony Head? Goth cyberpunk musical? Yes, sir, may I have another!
I too heartily recommend this movie. It's not scary per se, but the characters and music are great- and it is a whole lot of fun.

In regards to Stephen King, I think my favorite book of his is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. If you haven't read it, it's about a ten-year-old girl who gets lost on the Appalachian Trail. I have read The Mist; haven't seen the movie. I may pick up Dreamcatcher some time in the future.

have you watched http://www.youtube.com/user/MarbleHornets?

Yes. GAWDAMMOT EPISODE 19 STOP MAKING ME PARANOID. ?_?
And the whole reason I started playing Amnesia in the first place was because of Penumbra. Which I adore, needless to say. (Clarence, whyyyyyyyyy. ;3; )

My first response was "why hasn't this thread being locked", lol.

If you have PS2 or Xbox, you can try playing my favourite horror game, Fatal Frame 2. Knowledge of the first game is not necessary.

My goodness, no mention of Blind Mag and Grave Robber? Blind Mag is probably my favourite, simply for how she looks and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLUHKcILy2M. Grave Robber is just awesome.

Will check that book out, definitely.

For something more disturbing than all-out horror, I'd recommend the film Pi (it's actually the mathematical symbol, but I don't have one on my keyboard) - it's one of those creepy films that get into your head and stay there for days after watching it. But then I feel that way about "the Lord of the Flies" and I know loads of people that weren't affected by that book :P

If you like David Lynch you should definitely watch Inland Empire. It's long, and it doesn't make much sense, but it's so intense and disturbing. Not your standard horror flick by a long shot, but if you like surreal horror combined with intense suspense and eeriness then you have to check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DOty7PLWg0

Play Minecraft. Then you will know what became of those who entered the holes in Amigara Fault.
And yes, I am not kidding. This is a survival game, with horror creatures, and thus becomes survival horror. Don't let daytime fool you!

Oh god Eraserhead. I'm so glad I watched that, but at the same time I didn't know what the hell just happened. For scary things? I don't know, I don't have a very high tolerance for creepy stuff.

I stumbled across and old 70s movie a month or two ago while flipping channels and it was actually pretty good. Definitely low budget and not sophisticated, but creepy:

Of course either of the "28" movies scared the crap out of me along with "I am Legend". It may not have gotten great reviews but "Pandorum" made me very anxious watching it.

I think the intro to the first Jeepers Creepers is terrifying because it happens in broad daylight and as a Nebraskan Ive seen those roads with endless cornfields way too often lol.
