I don't think we've had one of these in a while, so I figured it was about time for another. Mostly because I wanted advise of book buying, though .



I'm thinking about picking up http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781845763565/Absolute-Sandman, the first of four such collections. However, the price (AU$74) makes me a little ambivalent, since I haven't read any books from the series. An alternative is to buy http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781563890116/Sandman-Preludes-and-Nocturnes, which is a quarter of the price and 40% of the page count (and similar volumes cover the rest of the series). Is going with the hardcover path (for collecting the series) worth the extra money, bearing in mind that my main interest its reading it?

I also plan to get hold of http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781845760229/Batman-Arkham-Asylum. However, I've just spent a chunk of money on other books, so I don't really want to spend close to a hundred bucks on comic books right now, which means it'd be something of an either-or between it and Sandman. If I have to make the choice, which should I grab first?

Oh, and please avoid any reference to storylines -- I like to approach books/tv series/movies with as little foreknowledge as possible. I even go so far as to keep a list of interesting stuff and leave things on it until my memory of them is minimal .

Sure, count me in. I have my fair share of manga, and my comic book collection is only getting bigger. Just recently got the whole Deadpool: Head Trip story. I love Deadpool. Totally my kind of humor.

I've heard great things about Sandman - when I've got some cash to spare it's definitely on my reading list. Tbh, apart from the odd webcomic and The Matrix themed stuff, I've only read Preacher, which I loved. I think it might have spoiled me for other comics, as I don't think anything else will live up to it! But everyone I've talked to recommended Sandman straight away. Anyone else got any suggestions for stuff which is similar in tone to the Preacher series?

I have stopped collecting comics over 15 years ago. Whenever someone asks for a Graphic Novel I always think of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:X-Men_God_Loves_Man_Kills_cover.jpg. This is one of the first grahic novels I ever read, and still I find it the best. (of course I never read anything made within the last decade and a half).

So if you want a classicd see if you can find this. One of the best ever in my opnion.

I have not read the whole series, but what I have read is great. I'd recommend picking up Preludes and Nocturnes; although I'd suggest skipping over "24 Hours" if you're squeamish or easily traumatized (Or moderately easily traumatized),

Arkham Asylum was also amazing.

If you're just looking to read it, the Sandman trade paperbacks (TPBs, graphic novels, whatever) are fine.

One thing to note is that the first volume isn't terribly representative of the rest of the series. Most of the later volumes are contained story arcs, whereas the first volume has alot of variance between issues (some are more fantasy, some are more horror, etc) while still having a story thread running between them. (There was also still a bit of connection to the main "DC universe" at that point, since they hadn't broken off all their fantasy stories into the Vertigo comic line yet.)

So, don't get discouraged if some of those things turn you off about the first book.... it's not quite the same as the later stuff.


(But, yes.... it's definitely worth it.)

Head Trip is a good one, since... Well, I don't wanna ruin it. You meet a lot of interesting characters.

One fight scene, in particular, I REEEAALLY want to see animated.

I know he's in a few video games, but I want a video game that's just Deadpool. It could satire the FPS genre!
