Commander voices...

Post » Thu Feb 04, 2010 2:37 pm

A quote from HORSE's blog at freefrag - You will be able to choose from 8 different voice packs, and some Commander-only voices.

What does this mean, and does it have any gameplay consequences? Is that one person is randomly chosen as a Commander of a faction (perhaps the server host?) and he just has a different voice, or would he have some kind of influence over the objectives? I don't exactly know what I mean by that last sentence, maybe they can assign objectives...? Create side objectives, maybe?

Simply put, is a "commander" just a plot character, or does he have a special role in Brink?

Don't need to bump 26 minutes after creating a thread. I'm sure it's referring to the voice in character customization, where you can have different accents [Ie: Scottish, British etc]. I'd assume commander means either security or commander of the team has a unique voice over the radio.

Which further goes to show how amazing Brink will be with such a dedication to customization.

I guess the commander-voice is the one which announces an objective to be completed and the like.

It really all depends on how you want your experience to be. You could have some Scottish dude screaming into your ear or have a German dude screaming at you. And even a boring American ( I kid, I am American). Or dare I even say a girl commander, very TF2-esque. And maybe then people would stop raging over females being absent in Brink. Lets hope I didn't just open something up...

When you say female commander, the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vq3tXadahs comes to my mind instantly. Would make up for a very nice easteregg.

King of the Hill Mode-Overtime!Overtime!Overtime!Overtime!
That was the best.

But I think you answered my question in your first post. I think it'll just be the voice that announces the objectives to the rest of the team, but my question now is how a commander would be chosen in a game? A vote, mayhaps?

Commander voice is the announcer, other voice packs is the way you speak. If you use quickchat (assuming it's there) or if you run low on health, you will shout with a certain accent. Like: "Need Ammo!"

In this game it's a computer shouting new missions and announcements. Let's say you have no engineers and you need one to complete the objective, then the commander will shout automatically: "We need an engineer" or something like that.
It's a computer dividing missions, to make sure that players won't fight to be the commander etc.

I know that, I have many, many many hours in TF2 and various shooters, but I was just saying, considering no one actually really knows what commander voices are, that it's possible they are voices you unlock at the rank of commander.

New idea (plot related):

Your 'commander' starts off pretty nice all things considered. But as you start losing, they get more and more desperate. Screaming, yelling abuse (possibly), threatening... and generally acting vewy mean. :sadvaultboy:

This effect is magnified the more crucial the mission is to the story, and you can literally hear the tension in the commander's voice as you lose yet another command post. Possibly different commanders and voices could have different ways of delivering these lines and different temperaments. :flame: :swear:

That's a brilliant idea! I'm tired of hearing the repeated you guys svck/good job in games like Gears of War II, just canned dialogue that never changes.

War. War never changes.

Dialogue can become boring, and I think the commander voice packs will alleviate this to a certain extent. Yet sometimes that same canned dialogue is the staple of a generation, such as Mortal Combat or Resident Evil (with the game over screen).

It is a staple, but only if it sticks out from the usual dialogue. I don't want to hear generic berating or praise of a team. I want something to remember.

Such as the super testerone man who yells Killstreak during Unreal Tournament, or the classic
Snake? Snake?!? SNAAAAAAAAKE!!!

"I was like BOOM HEADSHOT, BOOM HEADSHOT, BOOOOOOOM HEADSHOT!!!" Boondock Saints(the movie) - CSS servers went crazy with it until it was taken to court for copyright. Boo, it was a classic line that I didnt mind hearing. Hell, it made headshots that much more gratifying.
I still trust in Brink for captivation. I doubt it will be some generic lines over and over, at the very least they will have some emotion in the lines.

I'm pretty sure that quote was from FPS doug
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsQFYceNZS8

who, incidentally, would be AWESOME to have as a commander voice.
