Common thing in TV/Movies, is it common in real life?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:17 pm

Did the title get ya? Yeah, now you have to read the first post so you know what I'm talking about. So sneaky.

Ahem, anyways. Something that I just randomly wanted to know. I see TV shows, commercials, and sometimes movies where people keep some form of journal or diary. Usually teenage girls, but other people as well. Does anyone actually do this in real life? I don't, and as far as I know nobody else does that I know (though the list of people I know is minuscule). Sooo... do you?

I use what space is left in my memory to store useless information that will be forgotten whenever I get old...

We had to keep a journal in 5th grade, though I don't remember if it was daily or just on Mondays to write about our weekend. Either way, haven't had one since then. Bottling your feelings up saves time, space and trees.

I've kept both a journal(day to day events) and a Diary(special stuff, and inner thoughts) off and on throughout most of my life. I don't currently, but I was keeping one for a while last year ^^

No, but I know a couple people that keep one.

Closest thing I use for a diary is a camera.

I don't even think journalists keep a journal and it seems that's what you would expect them to do. Doogie Howser supposedly did. I'm glad Anne Frank did.
I'm sure there are some who do. Maybe writers who think they will be important someday. I know I don't.

And Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.

He was a nice guy. Wonder what ever happened to him...

I don't need one. I'm really good at remembering pointless information but not A-Level maths. :swear:

Naw. In fiction, I usually see those journals serve as a plot items or history tool that would help the character figure out stuff or help refresh the viewer's memory on current event.

I used to when I was a lot younger (about 12) but became quite cynical after we were at a friends and another friend stole and read my friends diary (does that make sense?). After that I stopped doing it - gets you into too much bother. Ironically I now keep a sort of makeshift blog online on a photography site but it's nothing very personal; certainly nothing I wouldn't want work colleagues to know. I always feel that's as much information as you should give about yourself online - if your boss found it, would be they be unimpressed?

Nope - I did try it once but it was so boring just writing out what I did. In the end I just wrote very nasty things about my sister as I knew she'd snoop :P Horrible I know, but I was young and she was a pain in the ass! It used to be a good tool for historians I think (say like Pepys diary), but now that everything is documented in some way on the internet, I don't think there's a point unless you're the nostalgic type that likes to look at old photo albums of your childhood and things like that.

I most certainly do! How else to keep track of all the naughty users? :toughninja: Honestly, though. I did when younger. Then didn't for almost 2 decades. Now I keep one again. After a tough year, I find it theraqeutic to have something to write my frustrations and such out in. Plus it's a placeholder: the last thing I do right before bed is write. Even if it's just briefly. I write recipes I liked. Restaurants and the dishes I enjoyed. Interesting news stories that caught my attention. Thoughts on my current state. Oh, and all those people I have crushes on. ;)

I don't write in one everyday like is stereotypically portrayed, but every time something eventful or important happens I try and jot it down. I usually do an entry or two a month, but I sometimes do more. As for your other question, I do know of someone else that keeps (or kept, I guess. Not sure anymore) a journal, though I'm not sure what "fashion" it was in.

I do every so often, and actually the last few entries are from a long time ago when I was really emotional.

Very cheerful stuff that. I need to start a new one. :P

No, and it it's a pointless practice, IMHO.

If you don't have short term memory loss or Alzheimer's, you should be able to keep track of your thoughts without writing them down. Although I've heard it helps if you're stressed or an insomniac.

EDIT: Oh, and no, I don't know anyone who does, or ever has.

It really does help relieve stress. I started mine right before I really came out to my parents. The nights were horrible during that, and my journal kept me somewhat sane.

I kept a journal in high school. I look back on it and reflect on how I was. I stopped in my senior year.

I tried keeping a diary once. Or twice. But I wrote in it like once, forgot about it and stopped. So no. And I'm a teenage girl. :P I know very few people who do keep diaries.

Like someone said earlier, diaries/journals in fiction are usually plot devices. That's why there's so many of them.

I've tried, but I found it boring so I stopped. Writing Twitter-esque blurbs in the Lurker's Lair and other places is easier.

Yeah, but I don't really know anyone else who does.

It's more of a journal or log than a diary. I just write down what I did during the day (usually just a word or phrase) as a list, and keep track of a few stats and stuff (like my health) for information purposes.

I'll log ideas and thought process down if they are too complex or important to trust my memory working with them, but that's about it.
