Companion commands..

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:43 am

I play on the PS3, and it occurred to me that there is absolutely no need for UP and DOWN to both select favourites.

That coupled with the pretty weak command system for your companions, I think that DOWN would have been better suited to select a context based command crosshair for them.

It would have enabled whole new character 'classes' - pure healers, captains, etc ______________ And it would always be useful to have more tactical control over your pack mules.

What do you guys think?

Would be nice if I could command my companions to heal me, strictly use archery and to heal themselves or buff themselves with something similar to the companion menu in Fallout New Vegas.

Hell ya. I've had my follower charge into battle with 2 giants, and she got pwned.....
Yet I gave her A GLASS BOW!!!!!! But nope, she likes charging.

I guess a kind of Dragon Age tactic system would work for both of you guys then.. (I agree)

How about telling them to do tasks. Like hunting for food, finding ingredients, use specific tactics, go to a city, etc..

It would be easy to set them to a certain tactic too. Like have 4 options:
1. Melee Combat
2. Ranged Combat
3. Offensive Magic
4. Healing Magic

That would be really cool!

For that entering 'conversation' would be fine, but for attack this, pick up that, move there - I think it should be more fluid.

Yes, except I think you could separate some of those by the companion type. If they are best at using a 2-handed hammer then don't give them a bow, just hire a hunter instead... etc

But some sort of simple system like you're suggesting would be a very welcome addition.

How hard would a mod for that sort of thing be? I played Morrowind on PC, but Oblivion and Skyrim on PS3. I have no idea about the whole modding side of TES :(

yeah there should have been a shortcut to bring up the companion crosshair.

But I am happy enough with them.

I just wish they could learn spells.

Yeah, the wheel was amazing. When Skyrim didn't have it I was kind of bummed out.

Yeah fair enough. It's not a massive issue I suppose...

Just one of many other little improvements that could be made. Overall I'm one of the guys who love this game though!

I would have liked it if you could issue commands in real time instead of opening the dialogue every time, eg: "ctrl + click" and they interact with the target or "shift + q" and they run away from battle (i think fallout had a mod like this). Also, there are very few abitities that can be used on allies and no way to cast ironflesh or use fortify potions on them either. And they all are dumb as a rock, even the intellectual wizards. Companions have been greatly improved from oblivion but still they could have done more.

Yes, agreed.

They could have done more with it - and I'm sure the modders will create all sorts of cool features for the PC version. I just hope there'll be a few patches or DLC for the consoles which offer certain enhancements too.

I discovered another thing I wish I'd known ages ago:

If you hold down the 'interaction' button near your companion the curser goes straight to the command option...

(so it turns out my major concern in the OP was unfounded - but there could still have been more depth to the companion system)
