[WIPz]: Companion Drizzt Do'Urden for Oblivion

Post » Tue Apr 05, 2011 6:58 am

It will be done, I just may wait a considerable amount of time before doing so. I really need a break and the MERP work is not so epic in scale as what I'm dealing with here. Besides, interest seems to be waning.

In preparation for The Vampire Hunter I am going to be going through the Underdark personally and re-level all of the creatures.

@Sulteric Drums

I've been observing your work with Viconia and Drizzt for a while now, even tried out Viconia ch1, but been hesitant to comment because I feel a bit turdish for what I must say. :embarrass:

IMO OB companion AI is not functional. Everything re your Viconia is wonderful: voice, dialogue, model, animation. But, my experience was ruined by the AI. I'm sure you are intimately familiar with all the issues I might itemize re AI.

So, I have the choice of either enjoying the constant companionship of an engaging character but suffering incompetent and flea-brained AI, or leaving her at home. A no-win situation for me. :sad:

I have fond memories of playing BG (especially BG2/TOB-haven't played in ~4 yrs) numerous times with different character combinations and tweaks+mods... PC (usually f/m or some sort of Dark Palaldin), Solaufein, Viconia, Valen, Edwin, Korgan is probably the most memorable party.

You can see I have a soft spot for your mods and would otherwise have enthusiasm for them. If there are any obscure suggestions for how I might enjoy adventuring with a companion please offer them because I haven't found them (I have read that attempting to improve companion AI would be difficult).

:)

@Sulteric

I would love a part 4, but thats up to you. Your Viconia mod is basically what got me back into playing Oblivion. Hell I've missed a lot in the year I let it sit on my desktop.

I would download Stoker right now, but tesnexus seems to be down.

*snip*

Yeah, I know what your talking about, but programming and/or improving any AI system is a major pain in the ass. Its arguably the hardest part of game development.
Its incredably difficult and costly for a major game company to make a decent AI system.

I wish it were better to, not just for this mod, but for all games. But like I said it is a monumental pain in the ass to do.

I've been able to deal with it by basically giving her a Bow and arrows and let her fire arrows from afar while I attacked up close.

This helps with regard to combat issues but it's the path-finding problems that really get in the way. :ahhh:

Too bad about the high difficulty of AI modifications. I suppose the best way to play with a companion involves lots of arrows and the summon companion spell in a convenient hotkey. Will still involve lots of comical situations-->annoyance and interference with immersion. I'll see... :)

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It is appreciated. Truth be told this one is going to take quite some time to write the outline for. In the meantime I am finishing up The Vampire Hunter and doing some work for the MERP team.

I will be interviewed in the September issue of the gamesas Blog. Stay tuned.

This will indeed be the most difficult of all of the mods. I am hoping the third level of the Underdark will be done by this time. Both Viconia and Drizz't will be in this. Old Book is going to do most of the writing and some if not all of his companion may be a part of it as well.

BTW, this really should be retitled to "The Underdark Saga Part IV - Drizz't Do'Urden

It's not a companion mod, it will be a quest of epic proportions.

I haven't looked into it to be honest with you. I want the same skin tone as Viconia. Slof would probably disagree with me here, I think she prefers a more darker Drow, I prefer lighter. The hair clearly needs to be customized as well as the armor. Slof has volunteered to do the armor and weapons. I have a voice actor already lined up. I would voice the Dwarf, Bruenor.

The Black Panther has already been done as well so it's just a snip out of another esp. I want the Underdark completely done though because this is going to explore just about every part of it.

Thats cool, Yeah skin tone from artwork of Drizzt shows his skin colour looks like a deep, dark purple, rather then black like described in the book. Iv made mine so that at a distant it looks black but as we get closer it moves to a dark purple shade. And yeah the ANB Panther works really well. Armor and weapons would be nice, Icingdeath and Twinkle are already out as a mod i think. Also for Infravision there was a Night-Eye Shader which turns Night-Eye into heat vision, worked really nicely but for some reason bugged when combined with toggle night-eye effects. Cant wait for this to get rolling. My Drizzt characters not even ventured into the Underdark yet, im planning it for when im at more of a level to defend myself easier.

I've immensely enjoyed Saerilith, and I like the latest ones you've done with Vicky, but I am waiting for Drizz. This sounds like a good mod and likely, I'll be helping you on this, but give me a shout if you need more for the Underdark so that I may be ahead of the game for you. I'm curious, are you going to make these as companions who romance each other? If it's done like the story about them, this will be very interesting and long, yes?
FYI, there will likely be more Mindslayers in the v0.60 (Middledark expansion) should you need more interaction and if so, the hidden Netheril seclusion is (supposedly according to lore and FR maps) located between the labyrinth and Sloopdolmopol.... sp? "whatever" ( the Kuo-toan settlement )

Outstanding, I love your work and have enjoyed adventuring with the companions. As an old DnD player, these mods rank high on my list of favorites. Keep up the good work, and thank you for all you've done so far.

BTW, I'm still working on ironing out a couple of AI issues. So good so far. I ran her through all of TVH, the prequel to Return to the Underdark with zero issues.

I have get rid of the bad lip files once and for all as well.
