Companion grumbles

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 2:23 am

...of all companions, might object to the player robbing and murdering trade caravans, right? Nope. She doesn't give a [censored], and indeed happily joins in the carnage. No professional solidarity there whatosever. She'll give me a bollocking for taking jet but won't even mention the hapless caravaners smeared across the long fifteen. Rubbish.

So now that I've got that off my chest... what are your pet peeves about your companions, what do they do (or don't do) that irritates you enough to consider serving them as dinner or selling them into slavery?

Followers in fo3 and nv are horrible, because the always go into seek and destroy mode when ever a red tick mark is around.

The only solution is to implement tactical shooter commands into fo.

Things like hold fire, fire on me, stay on me, and a point a click command system.

I ve said this several times before. I can t see any better way.

Cass in not going to charge a giant rad scorpion for no reason if it was real life. She would shoot it from far away.

They are dumb, because they have the same combat ai as any random NPC.

The fo follower system is horrible, and Bethesda needs to take a look at some old tactical shooters like SOCOM 2 or Conflict Desert Storm to have your followers act more like real people.

It doesn t need to be full out tactical shooter command, but just the most basic parts of them.IMO

Yep, happens to me too. In particular, both ED-E and Veronica freeze to the spot, completely immobile, when I complete their respective companion quests. I had to murder Veronica just last night for this very reason. (Well, I say "had to", I mean I could've just fired her, but given what she knows it wouldn't have been prudent to let her just walk away...)

The fo follower system is horrible

I agree. Unless there's drastic improvements in Fallout 4, I wouldn't be sad to see them ditch companions altogether tbh.

My only problem with followers is that they exist. Both FO3 and FO:NV are best played solo.

I love them, and I d rather have them than not.

The command system just has to be changed IMO

I am just about to kill something but then have to reload and take my kill. All of that work and ammo for an assist. :brokencomputer:

it bugs me a little bit when Cass takes the final shot instead of me. It's like, damn, I was going for that.

Also the game becomes quickly very easy when you use companions, and it already was not challenging. That said, I love how they randomly comment about quests and such.

They hardly ever do though. That's one of my big bugbears about companions, there's so little input from them, they barely react no matter what you do, outside of their personal quests and the odd token line of endgame dialogue. I want them to talk about the terrors we just faced in Vault 22, say, or the fact we helped Restore Hope, but they've hardly ever got anything relevant or pertinent to say.

I play on hardcoe, so they can die. That's important for my pet peeve with them.

ED-E, the most fragile of companions, refuses to actively back away and fire. He lets things beat on him, and then dies. I've started habitually telling him and Veronica to wait outside for me when I go explore someplace. (I tell Roni to do that because I've come outside and found things killing ED-E before, so she's the babysitter.)

He won't seek cover, nothing. Just seems to be trying to die. I don't want my portable fridge to die, so I'm constantly having to check and see if he's under fire, and change my targets to protect him. At least Roni can take care of herself most of the time. Rex is no better than ED-E, though, since he's always running directly at everything trying to kill him, even though he's not sheathed in T-51b like me and Roni. Actually, Rex is worse...I can't use him as a fridge.

Boone will repeatedly switch from sniper to machete and back, and he's on ranged. And I look behind me often because Rex likes takin dumps and waiting for me to come back to him. And they always get stuck in rocks and rock walls. I'm just glad I haven't encountered anything with E-de yet

Once in the vault with
Spoiler
all the killer plants
Ed-E got stuck in the ceiling of one of the rooms. I had to shoot him unconscious to get him free.

But ... Without companions, how will I carry an extra 400+ pounds of gear back to my home base?? ;)

That's pretty much all I use them for.

If your on the PC and you want too make companions in HC mode essential, press ~ than click on the person/NPC you want essential ( there are 2 ways too do this next bit but the only way i know is the NVSE way, you need it for most mods anyway) and type GBO, it will come up with a random lines of numbers and letters. now type:

setessential >insert there string of numbers here< 1

without the > and <

a little tip!.

You will need new Vegas script extender but you should of downloaded that if you on the PC anyway.

I hate how ED-E steals my kills too often if I don't set him to melee, seriously after I took him to the fort he became an unstoppable beast :(

I also hate how Raul never shuts up about his stupid knees.. If I didn't have an obsession with collecting them in my L38 pad I'd have killed hiss ugly ass ages ago.

Are you crazy?! Upgrade his armor, then take a boat ride to the fort... I took my ED-E to deadwind cavern, he flew of with his battle song playing, when I eventually caught up to him (after stepping over all the DEAD deathclaws I got there just in time to see him get whacked unconsious by the legendary Deathclaw.. He had hurt it quite a bit though... Seriously, Dual upgraded ED-E > Liberty bloody PRIME! LMAO

Boone does that for me too.

Every time you load up your game, immediately talk to him, switch him to close-ranged combat, then switch him back to long ranged. That fixes this.
Rex also randomly sits for me and needs me to come fetch him, but I don't know a fix for this. I usually use ED-E.

the companions make the game too easy. i drag them along to do their quest then ditch them. except raul, he gets to wait in either novac or the 38; full maintainence is far too valuable to let go to waste.

dragging around companions through the mojave freezes my game more. their pathfinding ability is horrible; if they get too far away that freezes my game. they don't always get pulled through doors causing massive frame rate drops and freezes.

most of my complaints are technical.

rex's random stopping: is this before you finish his quest? after i finish his quest i find he doesn't do it anymore. i'm not positive this fixes it, anyone else notice this? i just assumed his random stopping was related to his "problem".

my biggest companion grumble is lily's voice. i can't express in words how much her/it/his voice irritates me. on top of that, she/it/him has the most annoying personal quest. i like the story of the quest, just not the triggers.

one last thing....i'll be walking along then get a message saying 'ed-e has died'. then i find my companions took off without me and are fighting deathclaws alone. just one of the many reasons my last three playthroughs were without companions.

For what it's worth, I do like some of thecomments they make ... the first time.

But after 450 times hearing Raul assure me that I'll be fair and equitable or Veronica's consistent dress requests, etc. It gets a bit old.

My two favorite companions are ED-E and Christina (when you first meet her, anyway). No talking. Just a bit of victory music and a snapping fingers.

I find companions switch from melee/ranged etc. less often if you make sure their primary weapon is much stronger than the secondary (vs. being close to the same). So if you want them to be ranged, don't give them a ballistic fist to carry. Not saying it stops it completely, but it does often make it occur less. In my game at least.

That's what I like about Cass. She doesn't hold a bunch of rubbish like Boone, Veronica or Arcade.

Fact is, Mojave ain't part of NCR unless you help them. Caravan raiding is pretty common as well, she only hold grudge against Van Graffs and Crimson because they raid her caravan and burn all merchandise..that's just not part of the competition.

So you think it's entirely in-character for an ex-caravaner who lost her livelihood to bandits to happily partake in a spot of banditry herself? 'Cause it strikes a massive bum note for me.

Striking a similarly bum note is the way Veronica, sweet, dear, kind-hearted Veronica, will happily murder unarmed civilians at my behest. Ruuuuubish.
