Companion Importance in Skyrim

Post » Tue Dec 21, 2010 3:01 pm

I don't like having companions, they just cause problems for me. Oh damn my companion is dead. Re-load. Oh no my companion wandered off and got lost. Re-load. Etc...

I just prefer the lone wolf thing anyway. I am the dragonborne. I don't need some chump following me around.

.
Only unless they are optional and don't affect game play if you don't choose one.
I guess dogs and donkeys are okay and a spouse who stays home, cooks, cleans and takes care of the kids and the garden.
Other than that I want to play the game alone and not have companions pestering me like they do in other games.

Why not. The companions in New Vegas were actually really good, if Skyrim has something like that I think it would be a good thing.

I'd probably not use them though... the game becomes a lot easier with companions, I also like playing a loner most of the time.

Yeah, companions would be cool. But definetly they should be improved. So they would comment on the things etc, not be completly silent. And I mean in the time that you are not directly talking to them.

I don't like companions, they just get in the way. My two prefered playstyles are stealth and nuking and both are easier to perform if you don't have blundering fools alerting enemies to your presence (because they svck at sneaking) or getting in the way of your area spells.

I will hunt down and slay every single companion I come across in some dark corner on my first and main character. I may check them out a year or two later on some different character though.

I hope some companions are added in or the AI is upgraded for them but I won't use them. They will get in the way and if I have to go thieving then they'll be useless.

You can't be serious? The companions were extreemly glitchy and ALWAYS got in your way during fighting.......and like you said they make the game too easy.

I think companions should be optional. They're out there and if you need or want their help you can ask them to join you and then dismiss them whenever you choose. Much like the ones you get after becoming the head of each guild in oblivion, but with more to say and maybe a few quests for you to do...and maybe a little romance.

I am fine with this as long as they do not have whole quest lines around them like in NV.

I hope they add companions as long as they're optional to use. I disliked the Oblivion quests where you were forced to team up, mainly because the companion pathfinding was horrible. They'd get stuck behind everything larger than a flower. Mercenaries for hire, like in Tribunal, would be a nice touch, and I can imagine there'll be plenty of bloodthirsty Nords out there willing to crack a couple skulls for a bottle of mead.

Never used companions that much in games in general. Usually when I do, they tend to get lost/stuck/killed and are boring to be with.

I would LOVE NPC companions that are competent and have personality (kind of like Mass Effect 2).

Only if there are no companions like Farwil Indarys.. sure the personality would be a little fun, but /not/ his AI suicidal stupidity!

Me: No.. no, no! Don't run after the deadra! They're already di-

Farwil: Yay! *dive bombs into the lava*

Me: Fuuu-!!

Not a nice memory.

I'd like the option for companions in Skyrim. Just as long as they are not like Oblivion "companions" - way underpowered, stupid (like the above Farwil example, or just blindly changing any enemy they meet no matter what), and always running in front of your attacks.

Fallout 3 companions are a HUGE improvement over Oblivion companions. FO3 type companions would make a great addition to Skyrim. My only issue with companions in FO3 is that they "steal" experience points.

Never been a huge fan of companions. I like going solo, although in some cases they're nice to have around. I see no reason why they shouldn't be added to Skyrim as well as they're integrated well. Fallout companions are good but could use a little more variety. Companions would fit in well with Radiant Story and such.

I'm a bit reluctant but it could work. Not necessarily for the main quest itself but it could open up for some interesting mods.

Only if they improve the AI a lot. I usually play sneaky characters, and I don't want my companions to screw up my assassination attempts. =/

If they were there, wouldn't use them. I actually like being a Lone Wanderer... not to mention that they would break immersion for me as my characters tend to have complicated goals an motives.
If they want to spend extra resources, add them. But don't make the game so that you need them in order to enjoy it.

Most important thing with companions is making them optional.

Never used a companion mod in OB (and fast-traveled to get past any plot-induced "escort" junk), avoided companions like the plague in FO3 (after utterly hating the Sydney quest), and only used a couple in FO:NV because they were kind of not optional (you could skip them, but they had buckets of quests & lore attached to them).

I hope they go more like FO3, so that there's no real need to be burdened with them.

I'm hoping for some reasonably 'deep' companions to fix the lonely 'me against the world' feeling. Its not really the same with just a random meatshield.

They shall never compare or measure up to an actual second player. . . but they could be pleasant to have along. . . when they were not doing something stupid like getting lost, or charging into a battle against your will and beyond their ability to handle.

I agree, there must be some fully fleshed companions in that huge world, or else I'll wonder like I did when I finished Oblivion: did I really care for someone in that game, did they worth the trouble? Strong personalities with deep backstory = memorable characters = win.
