Companions can be fun to have around, and they can be a royal pain in the buttoochey. Depends on the character, and depends on how well they're done. The generic apprentice or Knight of the Nine from Oblivion are useless, and I never use them. I don't need mindless help to complete the game, I like companions for the company. Modder's can create excellent companion mods; Kateri's Julan, Emma and Grumpy's Constance (both from Morrowind) come to mind, and I've yet to see a developer created companion that compares. The companions from NV come close, with their quests and personalities. When I'm playing a stealthy character, like a thief or a sniper, I rarely use any companions, because they mess with my sneaky mojo. I wouldn't mind seeing them in Skyrim. I just hope that their AI improves, so that when I'm sneaking, they sneak and stay passive, until I want them to attack.
