Companion's Jobs

Post » Fri Feb 26, 2016 4:44 pm

So I had the brilliant idea to have all the companions gather at Sanctuary. However, it is also my dump spot for all the junk gathered, so scavenging benches are useless. Now to keep the populace happy, the need to be assign a job.. so what works thematically?

Dogmeat- A dog

Codsworth- Useless

Preston Garvey- Guard

Piper-? (Maybe as a food vendor? Keeps track of all the settlements food supplys)?

Nick Valentine- ?

Deacon- Bar (What better way to hear secrets)

MacCready- ?

Danse- Guard? What else can he do in power armor

Cait- Farmer (Would make a great Vet)

Hancock- ?

Strong- Guard?

Curie- Surgery Center of course

So what else would work for these goons? The problem is you need like 50 shops just to get into the 90 percentile of happiness. Granted I have all the level 4 merchants and already 2 trading posts, 1 medical center, 1 bar

I couldn't stand to have my companions around any place I frequent. Traveling with them is fine, but when they are idle they can get annoying with their repeated lines ... particularly in places like the Castle where they will comment about what shape it's in over, and over.

Still, if I had to assign them ...

Cait would be a guard. She likes to fight too much to be relegated to manual labor.

Curie would, of course, be the doc.

Piper would probably run the bar ... barkeeps are gossips and so is Piper.

I'd make Nick the scavenger. I always create a 'police station' and put the scavenging station in a back room out of sight. Because the scavenger patrols with a weapon, it makes him look like a cop going in and out of the police station and patrolling the settlement.

Codsworth is a butler. He should buttle. But, I don't think he's assignable, is he?

Deacon would remain unassigned so that he'd sandbox around the settlement. He'd be my spy, using his amazing ability to change clothes when nobody is looking to confuse and amuse the other settlers and tell me who is and isn't trustworthy. Of course, I couldn't believe anything he said about them.

MacCready and Danse would have to be guards, if I couldn't make them provisioners.

Strong would be arena fodder when Wasteland Workshop comes out. Come to think of it, so would MacCready, Danse and Preston.

I'm not familiar with Hancock or the institute synth ... I don't play the sort of characters who would ever recruit them.

Well, he wanted to know what jobs you would assign them if you had to place them.

What I actually do with companions are different.

Nick, Piper, Danse and Deacon all have places to be when not with me, so I never send them to any settlement. I always tab out so they return to their default 'homes'. Piper has a sister to take care of, Nick an agency to run, etc.

Dogmeat and Codsworth get the same treatment, but that's because their sandbox routines are better when left unassigned. Codsworth will continue to patrol around Sanctuary if not actually sent somewhere. He just acts like a floating tree stump anywhere else. And I like Dogmeat's running around the Red Rocket better than his doghouse behavior if he's sent somewhere.

Curie and Cait have no places to return to that they want to be at, so I do assign them homes. Curie I set up in Taffington ... assembled her a research lab. When Wasteland Workshop comes out I will set up cages and trap her a bunch of life forms for her to scan ... for science, of course. Cait is in charge of my small fortified outpost in Covington.

I don't like MacCready or Strong, so they were never recruited. Nor was X6-88 or Hancock as I don't play the criminal types that would work with Bobbi or the Institute.

Preston still wanders around in Sanctuary doing his own thing. I never recruited or assigned him to anything. His job is to keep Marcy Long happy.

Can you even assign them jobs? I've tried to assign them, but they became unassigned after leaving and returning. Except for farming I don't think they can work shops or scavenge.

Codsworth, had to be manually assigned to each plant (he wouldn't auto assign to 6 food) I think even then, he came unassigned.

You can assign Codsworth but he magically gets bored and does it no more once you leave the settlement.

PhalseDemeise, are you on PC or console? There are commands on PC to make them re-assignable.

I wish you could have like a "Police" station, lumber-mill, steel-mill, ect... do you know how could it would be to have Hancock produce Commonwealth's steel supply! I just feel bad for assigning him to some medial task when he once was a mayor and grew bored with it. Even to have Preston set up a command post for minute men.. but alas.. there are shops, farms, and scavenging benches... which really do me no good. (I suppose farms won't produce extra either since the workshop is so full). I cannot really return them to where they were, plus Piper is my romance so I reckon she would like to stay with me.

I kind of wanted Sanctuary set up as a sort of Embassy where all groups could come and work together. But they still need jobs else they are freaking unhappy.

P.S. Still think Cait would make a good Veterinarian. She and Strong could wrestle down a brahmin and do whatever was needed.

On PS4, I actually bought it for PC too, but then found out i need a better OS. Looking at getting a better one this summer maybe.

I made a makeshift police station in sanctuary, put a few scavenger stations in a building. dressed one in a blue suit and mailman hat, dressed the deputy in blue suit and militia hat and gave them 10mm pistols and shotguns. Now they walk around and gleefully say things like "we ripped those raiders to pieces"

I just make them all do farm works since they don't affect happiness, it's extra hands for the farms while other settlers sell stuffs to increase happiness.

You should send Codsworth to do farming. If I remember right, he is more efficient with farming that the settlers.

EDIT: oh, he's bugged? Hopefully this bug has been reported.
